Witness shot while defending woman from suspect

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A good Samaritan is now in the hospital after trying to chase down a man suspected of trying to a woman outside her north Houston home.

The trouble started around 5:30am when a woman was pulling up to her home on Jensen near East Crosstimbers. Police believe a man tried to jump into the car and rob her, but family members at the house heard her calling for help.

Police say, according to witnesses, when family came out to help her, it scared the suspect off, but the situation didn't end there. They tried to pursue the suspect, driving after him across the street to a parking lot of a business, and that's when the suspect shot a family member.

Investigators are still in the process of talking to witnesses but hope to know more soon.

Jack Harvey with the Houston Police Department said, "We're hopeful that some witnesses who are cooperating with us will be able to get with sketch artist and we'll have a sketch to give the media sometime today. Hopefully people will recognize him and give us some information."

The shooting victim is a 45-year-old man in critical condition. His condition is considered life-threatening. HPD Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
