Local shoppers run into trouble buying gift cards

Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- "Super Saturday" is what retailers have dubbed the Saturday before Christmas, but local shoppers making a last-minute dash to the stores ran into some trouble.

With just three days until Christmas, shoppers are packing into stores.

"It's just so many people everywhere all the time," shopper Emily Austin said.

It was so many people that some local retailers' credit card systems have been crashing.

We spoke with several managers who say they were unable to issue gift cards for much of the day because of unprecedented demand.

"I think it is crazier this year than last," shopper Katia Mazzone said. "I've noticed a difference."

Retailers we spoke to said the gift card problems had cleared up by Saturday night, but it's hard to tell what will happen as people continue their last-minute shopping.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Former President George H.W. Bush will not leave a Houston hospital until he's made a full recovery.

A Bush spokesperson says the former president has had a few days where he hasn't had much energy, so doctors at Methodist Hospital are putting off his discharge until he's fully recovered.

Bush had been expected to go home sometime this weekend.

The 88-year-old has been in the hospital since Thanksgiving for treatment of a lingering cough related to bronchitis.

Houston-area officials seek highway shortcut to Aggieland

AP  HOUSTON -- Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle arrived late to a meeting in Magnolia last week about the need to improve Texas 249. He was stuck in traffic on that very highway.

"This is Exhibit A for why we need to get this 249 project done," Cagle said when he arrived about 20 minutes after the meeting started. "You plan, you add that extra hour to your journey and you're still running late."

But easing the workday commute for tens of thousands of residents around Tomball, Pinehurst and Magnolia is just one goal of the plans local officials have for 249. Montgomery County officials are hoping to extend Harris County's planned Tomball Tollway, expected to start construction late next year. And the Texas Department of Transportation, prompted by local officials clamoring for a Houston-to-College Station highway, is reviving study of taking the freeway all the way to Navasota, about 20 miles south of the Texas A&M campus.

The assorted projects, stacked behind each other annually from now until about 2016, rely on local cooperation.

"This is not a zero-sum game," Cagle said. "This is one where when the tide comes in, all the ships float."

Along 249, residents and officials have varying reasons to want a bigger highway. In Magnolia, which has exploded with residential growth over the past decade, there is huge demand to help commuters, said Deborah Rose Miller, executive director of the Magnolia Economic Development Corporation. Nearly 43 percent of the city's residents work outside Montgomery County.

A widened freeway also helps draw stores, restaurants and office buildings to the area, bringing some of the development Tomball has experienced to Montgomery County, Miller said.

All that's needed is a wider highway to accommodate the traffic, officials said. Helpfully, a 400-foot swath of right of way, acquired by the state in anticipation of future development, is available along 249.

"There is a segment out there screaming for concrete," said Montgomery County Commissioner Craig Doyal.

Harris County benefits from the easier access Montgomery County residents will have to Houston-area businesses and offices, Cagle said.

Work extending the Tomball Tollway from Spring-Cypress Road to Waller-Tomball Road is scheduled to begin next fall. From there, plans call for taking the toll lanes into Montgomery County, marking the county's first foray into pay-lanes.

Harris County officials are considering a proposal to partner with Montgomery County, lending up to $20 million to help design and build the northern expansion. Montgomery County would repay the money via its toll revenues.

"It is really more just a guarantee," said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.

Harris County officials entered into a similar agreement to help Fort Bend County build its tollway.

As the region grows, development needs don't stop at the county line, or at the boundaries of TxDOT districts. That's the purpose of coordination among officials from multiple areas to sync highways, such as Texas' lengthy Farm to Market roads.

"That has worked over the years," Emmett said. "You don't have many examples of where someone built a road to nowhere."

Along 249, TxDOT officials are building on what Harris County and Montgomery County are doing. Environmental study will begin next year along two planned segments of an extension of 249, said Russell Zapalac, TxDOT's chief planning and project officer.

State officials are working with local leaders in the area, who for years have lobbied for an "Aggie Highway" from the Houston suburbs to College Station.

"I don't think we're talking about building something grand at this point," Zapalac said. "But we certainly consider it one of our strategic projects."

The sections, one mostly in TxDOT's Houston district and the other in the agency's Bryan district, would connect 249 to the College Station area through Pinehurst, Todd Mission and Navasota.

Once officials have more specific plans and environmental reviews, they could start construction in about four years, said Marc Williams, director of planning for TxDOT.

A highway linking Houston and College Station would be useful beyond getting to Saturday Aggie football games, officials said.

Research in College Station will lead to business opportunities, many relying on movement of products, predicted David Ellis, a researcher at the Texas Transportation Institute's Texas A&M office.

Friendswood woman charged with deadly conduct after alleged drunken rampage

FRIENDSWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- A Friendswood woman is accused of deadly conduct after allegedly trying to run over her husband with a vehicle.

It happened just before 3pm Thursday in the 1100 block of Eagle Lakes Drive.

Michelle Lee O'Donnell, 40, is charged with deadly conduct-family violence.

According to police, O'Donnell drove over a curb and into her yard that afternoon. She then drove directly toward her husband as he was standing behind his truck in the driveway, placing him in danger of serious bodily injury, officials said.

She reportedly slammed into the back of his truck, but he was able to get out of the way. We're told she also got her vehicle stuck in the grass and then backed out into the street before she drove away. She was allegedly intoxicated at the time, officials said.

When officers arrived, they used the suspect's husband's cell phone to track her current location and a warrant was filed in Galveston County.

Police were called back to the residence around 8am Friday and found O'Donnell leaving the area. Officers stopped her vehicle as it entered League City on F.M. 518 and O'Donnell was taken into custody.

Investigators said they found an open bottle of vodka in the vehicle and an open flask of vodka in her purse.

Fatal crash blamed on underage drinking

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- Montgomery County authorities are investigating a fatal crash that left one person dead and three others injured, and they say the teenage driver had been drinking.

The accident happened around 2am Sunday. Details were not released, but the district attorney's office tells us 18-year-old David Wiggins was behind the wheel.

Wiggins was transported to a local hospital where investigators interviewed him. It was determined that alcohol was involved in the crash and that Wiggins had left a party at the home of a woman named Diane Kinsey.

There were three passengers in Wiggins' car. One of them died. That victim's name has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses with information about the party or the crash are asked to contact DPS or the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.

Officials warn that serving alcohol to a person under 21 is a crime and also may involve civil liability.

They say this is the third underage drinking-related fatal crash in this area of Montgomery County in the last few months.

Firefighters battle flames, gusty winds at northwest Harris Co. grass fire

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Firefighters spent a chunk of Christmas evening fighting a large grass fire in northwest Harris County, and the gusty winds made the battle more difficult.

The fire broke out shortly before 5pm Tuesday in a grassy area off Clay Road near Katy Hockley Road.

Firefighters from the Katy Fire Department and the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene with a bulldozer to battle the blaze, but the fire had an ally Tuesday night -- gusty winds. Gusty winds can delay firefighters' abilities to contain fires.

"It ran the fire south of us for a while but we were able to contain it," Cy-Fair VFD Chief J.C. Marshall said of the winds. "It got down close to a couple homes on the south side, but they were able to make a stop on it."

The fire had spread to 160 acres before it was completely contained around 6:30pm.

The biggest concern for firefighters had been protecting nearby homes, and thankfully, none were damaged.

No injuries were reported in the fire, but its cause has yet to be determined.

An investigation is underway.

Flames consume northwest Harris Co. club house

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A two-alarm fire completely damaged a neighborhood club house in northwest Harris County Christmas night.

The fire erupted around 6:30pm at the Lakes on Eldridge subdivision's club house in 12000 block of Lake Center Run.

By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the building was already engulfed in flames and quickly grew to two alarms from there, a Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department spokesperson said.

Firefighters went into defensive mode after the club house's roof collapsed but still faced an uphill battle bringing the fire under control because of Tuesday night's gusty winds.

About 50 firefighters helped battle the blaze, and one of them suffered a shoulder injury in the process. That firefighter was transported to Cy-Fair Hospital to seek treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Year later, tri-county wildfire victims make long strides

MAGNOLIA, TX (KTRK) -- At this time last year, we first introduced you to the Barr family. Despite losing nearly everything in the wildfires of 2011, the husband and wife adopted a family to help this Christmas. For them, many things have changed since last year, but one thing remains the same.

When we met Kay and Rocky Barr last Christmas, they were homeless.

"I still have hope that we'll do Christmas 2012," Kay told Eyewitness News then. "I need all the prayers that we can get."

Their house was ravaged by the tri-county fires. Still, they managed to make Christmas magical, not just for each other but for another family in the same position.

"I just want joy and happiness," Kay said.

Twelve months later, Kay Barr's Christmas prayers were answered.

"We finished one bedroom and one bathroom and then we moved in," Rocky said.

Her husband Rocky -- with help from family, friends and strangers -- has finished the outside of their new home.

"We're probably at 75 percent complete," he said.

And Kay will spend Christmas, with a house full of family -- not in a trailer or a motel -- but right where she belongs.

The last year hasn't come and gone without challenge -- cancer, deaths in the family and Rocky's own illness.

"After our interview last year, he had a double back-to-back stroke," Kay said. "So, this year has been two steps forward and 10 backwards a couple of times, but we persevere, just keep going."

Even with life still in flux, the Barrs never stopped giving. They adopted another family this Christmas.

"There was a lot of people who helped us and I know how appreciative I was, so I just, we need to give back too," Kay said.

We toured the Barrs' new digs.

"It's a big sense of accomplishment, when we drive up the road and there's our house, we're almost home," Rocky said.

And while there is a long road of rebuilding ahead, day by day they're getting there.

"My Christmas ornament there, "believe," it can happen. If you dream it, you can make it happen. It will all come together," Kay said.

Former President Bush to remain in hospital

AP  HOUSTON -- Former President George H.W. Bush spent Christmas in a Houston hospital with his wife, Barbara, and other relatives who planned to treat him to a special holiday meal.

Bush's son, Neil, and his wife also visited on Tuesday, and one of Bush's grandsons was planning to stop by as well, said Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston.

The 88-year-old has been in the hospital since Nov. 23 with a lingering, bronchitis-like cough. A hospital spokesman had said Bush was likely to be released to spend Christmas at home, but then McGrath said the former president developed a fever.

Doctors remain "cautiously optimistic" Bush will recover, but want to keep him in the hospital while they help him build up his strength and balance his medications, McGrath said.

On Christmas, the Bush family normally eats at Gigi's Asian Bistro in Houston's Galleria neighborhood, McGrath said. There were plans to pick up food at the upscale restaurant and bring the meal to the hospital.

Bush has been receiving visitors for weeks, including two by his son, former President George W. Bush, and one by Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife reside in Houston during the winter, and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II -- at one point the youngest in the Navy -- and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Cruise ship full of sick passengers docks in Galveston

AP  GALVESTON, TX -- A Crown Princess cruise ship on which about 100 passengers came down with a stomach virus during a 20-day trip to Italy has docked in Galveston.

Officials said about 96 passengers and six crew members contracted norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness that includes vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

Sick passengers were quarantined for three days. They received medical care in their rooms, which were also sanitized three times a day.

"I thought I was gonna die," said 63-year-old Gail Olezene of San Antonio. Olezene said she got sick three days after the Crown Princess left for Italy.

She was upset the company charged her for the medical care she received.

"We got sick on their ship, and they charged us to make us better," Olezene told the Houston Chronicle. "The fact that they charged us anything was outrageous."

The ship left Venice on Dec. 2 and arrived in Galveston early Saturday. On Thursday, officials with Princess Cruises released a statement saying the number of sick passengers aboard the ship had returned to normal levels.

Spokeswoman Karen Candy said the ship would be disinfected in Galveston.

Passenger Cathy Michaud, 65, said the ship was sanitized when the virus spread, and extra precautions were taken.

"We couldn't even touch the salt shakers," she said.

Rosemary Nonhof, a 67-year-old from Spring, Texas, said she enjoyed the trip -- even though she caught the virus.

"I'd rather be sick on a cruise than sick at home," Nonhof said.

Houston Hobby endures busiest travel day

Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- The weekend before Christmas is a busy time on the roads and in the air. Thousands of passengers went through Houston today as they head to their homes for the holidays.

Nearly 2 million travelers are expected to pass through Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airports during the holiday week, and Saturday was Hobby's busiest day.

With a bag filled with goodies, Shirley Kitchens is going to Disneyworld to see her family for the holidays.

"Oh my gosh, I couldn't sleep last night. It was very exciting," she said. "Just being with everybody -- it'll be fun."

Nearly 30,000 people were expected to travel in and out of Hobby Airport on Saturday. Friday was the busiest day at IAH with nearly 111,000 people traveling.

There were a few hang-ups at Hobby -- including delays -- and, as expected, it's not easy booking a last minute flight.

"Everything is booked. Everything is packed right now. It's hard to get in and out of here like normal. I'm going to sit around for four or five hours," Ken Ferguson said. "It'll be alright. I'll watch some TV and go eat."

But for the most part, lines were moving quickly.

"I was surprised because they had done a phenomenal job keeping up with Christmas traffic and making sure that everybody's getting to be where they need to be on time," traveler Brittiny Moore said.

Hobby was not the only busy airport Saturday. According to AAA, Texans are on the move.

The travel group projects nearly 7.7 million Texans will leave home during the holiday period. AAA expects most of them will travel by vehicle -- 7.1 million people to be exact. Texans are expected to log an average of 749 miles round-trip during the holiday period.

Christmas Day storms turn dangerous across Houston area

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Strong storms that moved across the Houston area Tuesday morning are being blamed for at least one death, thousands of power outages and plenty of damage.

Weather radars may have cleared, but remnants of the Christmas morning storms are still very visible, as downed trees and power lines remain scattered across some streets.

Meteorologist Casey Curry says a powerful upper level storm system combined with a warm, moist air mass produced the dangerous weather. Parts of the ABC13 viewing area endured damaging winds, small hail and even faced the threat of tornadoes.

The storms are being blamed for a young man's death in northwest Harris County. It happened around 9:30am in the 17600 block of North Eldridge Parkway.

Investigators say the man was trying to move a downed tree that was blocking the roadway when another one snapped and fell on top of him. He was taken to St. Lukes Hospital in The Vintage, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released, but we're told he's in his 20s.

In the Heights area, a knocked-down power line stretched across Interstate 10 at Washington, and road crews had shut down part of the highway to clear the scene.

And near the northern edge of Huntsville, downed power lines forced highway officials to close both directions of Interstate 45 for several hours until workers could clear that scene, according to the Walker County Sheriff's Office.

Reports of more downed trees and power lines also were made in parts of northwest, east and northeast Harris County.

In Montgomery County, power lines smoked and swayed in the wind for hours, and toppled trees lined some streets.

In Splendora, a tree fell on one home, busting through the bathroom window and causing thousands of dollars in damage.

"You could hear the wind just whistling, blowing. You could hear the hail all over the house. It was just crazy. It was literally crazy," Splendora resident Mindy Mitchell said.

In Kingwood, ABC13 cameras were rolling when the transformer of a downed power line combusted in the middle of a street in the Kings Mill neighborhood and startled just about everyone nearby.

"We heard a big pop and then all of a sudden we didn't have any electricity. It kept trying to come back on and then just nothing," Kingwood resident Mike Alexander said.

And then there were the power outages. At their peak, CenterPoint reported more than 75,500 customers had lost power during the storms, and Entergy reported about another 34,000.

Though the threat of severe weather is behind us, big changes are on the way, Curry said. She says bitter cold air is expected rush in from the north overnight, dropping our high temperatures to the mid-40s.

"Look for some of the coldest air of the season to settle into southeast Texas," Curry said. "Many of us will wake up to lows below freezing Wednesday morning."

By the afternoon, the high temperatures will struggle to reach 50 degrees, she said.

You can track any storms in the Houston area by downloading our free mobile apps. Also, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for updates as they happen.

Deputies: Couple tied up in home, husband killed

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A husband was tied up and stabbed to death and his wife was found restrained in a closet last night in their Kelsey Meadows home in what appears to be a deadly home invasion.

Jaime and Sandra Melgar were attacked in their home in the 9500 block of Kelsey Meadows Court. The couple was discovered by relatives who showed up at their home for an anniversary celebration. They found the garage door open and went inside.

Jaime, 52, was tied up in a closet. He had been stabbed to death, officials said.

His wife, Sandra, 53, told investigators she blacked out in a bathroom and then woke up in another closet restrained, but alive.

Homicide investigators aren't saying if the home was ransacked or if anything appeared to be missing. They are still working to gather suspect information.

Sandra Melgar has been interviewed extensively by investigators. She is now back home.

"Ms. Melgar says they were in the bathroom together, her and her husband, and at some time she blacked out and the next thing she remembers is waking up in the closet tied up," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Meanwhile, neighbors and relatives are shocked by the crime and anxious to find out who's behind it.

"I think we're all in shock because nothing like this has ever happened here before. We don't know what happened, if it was it totally random, in which case it could happen to anybody," said a neighbor who we're identifying only as 'Ann.' Murder suspect fires at HPD, leads police on chase

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man accused of murdering a woman and then shooting at a Houston police officer was arrested Sunday morning after leading police on a chase.

It all started around 7:15am at a Connie Leatrice Bowie's home in the 4100 block of Brisbane near Roandale.

Investigators were called there for an assult in progress. According to police, there was a domestic dispute between the homeowner and the 43-year-old suspect, Herbert G. Gardner.

When the first officer arrived at the scene, Gardner reportedly sprayed the officer's cruiser with a shotgun. The officer was not hit and Gardner fled in a red Dodge Nitro.

Police say they found Bowie's body in her home on Brisbane. The 39-year-old was shot to death.

Officers chased Gardner for about 20 minutes, exchanging gunfire, but no one was hit. The man eventually stopped at a home in the 5300 block of Glen Rio where he pointed a gun at officers again before he was subdued and arrested.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police said Gardner once dated Bowie and lived at the home on Brisbane with her, but he had recently moved out and they were arguing.

Police expect Gardner to face charges of murder, attempted capital murder of a police officer and possibly aggravated assault of a police officer.

Teens scare away Christmas Eve home burglars

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two children who were home alone when burglars broke in their back door are sharing their terrifying encounter. It happened Monday morning at a home in northwest Houston.

The homeowner thinks the thieves were watching him, waiting till he left to break in. Little did they know his two sons were still inside.

Daniel Vasquez left his house just before 8am Monday, looking for Christmas gifts for his two sons. Minutes later, a phone call.

"My son was crying and he was scared," he said.

He'd left his 15- and 12-year-old sons home alone. The younger woke up to find two men inside their house.

"Robbing stuff and vandalizing stuff," 12-year-old Emiliano Vasquez said.

The men apparently kicked in the back door, destroying its frame and allowing them access. There is a burglar bar on that door but it was left open.

Emiliano says he'd just woken up. He ran back to his older brother's bedroom as soon as he saw the strangers. The brothers called their father for help while looking unsuccessfully for a weapon, should the intruders get in the bedroom.

"Just hid under the bed," 15-year-old Nicolas Vasquez said.

"You hid under the bed, thinking that maybe he wouldn't see you?" we asked.

"I guess," he said.

The men fled, however, apparently spooked after discovering that indeed someone was home, but not before Daniel says they grabbed a flat screen TV and his laptop.

"Thank goodness nobody was hurt," he said.

What they stole here, Vasquez says he can replace, it's his two boys, his family, which he cannot. They're just thankful they celebrate this Christmas Eve together.

If you know anything about the thieves who hit this house you can contact Houston police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

HCSO: Driver flees after fatally striking woman

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman is dead and Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies are looking for the driver that hit and killed her.

According to officials, Andrea Davina Senteno was reportedly standing in the middle of Highway 249 near West Mount Houston just after 6am when she was fatally struck by an eastbound red Ford F-150 pickup truck.

"It's sad. Very sad," local business owner Peter Scott said.

By the time Scott arrived at his nearby barbecue restaurant at 7am, the damage was done.

"I just seen the ambulance and fire department and everything down there," he said. "I already knew what happened. People get hit on this street all the time. It's nothing new."

Two people reported seeing Senteno. The first 911 call came in at 6:04am to report a woman standing in the middle of the roadway. The second call came in at 6:07am to report that a woman had been hit.

The second witness was driving about 1,000 feet behind the striking vehicle when he saw the collision happen. He stopped, called 911 and stayed with the woman until emergency crews arrived. She died at the scene.

"It was dark at the time. The witness can't confirm if she was walking across the road or walking in the road, east or westbound," Anders said.

Investigators are still trying to piece together where Senteno was coming from and where she was going at 6am on a Saturday. She was alone and dressed in house clothes, but we've learned she was possibly the mother of young children.

A young mother herself, Raquel Blaine lives nearby and says people walk on the shoulders of Highway 249 and West Mount Houston all too often. Saturday morning's accident may now change her method of getting around.

"I get nervous because there's no sidewalk," Blaine said. "I mean, sometimes I have to walk, but I never walk down there. And people late at night, they don't watch where they're driving. There's no lights."

If you witnessed the accident or have information on the driver, call the HCSO Traffic Division at 713- 274-7400.

Suspect shot by DPS trooper during chase

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A motorcyclist eluded state troopers for more than 20 minutes before being shot in the leg this morning.

The chase started in Chambers County and ended near South Post Oak and Brookston in southwest Houston.

Troopers say they tried to pull over the motorcyclist for traffic violations, but he refused to stop.

The motorcyclist allegedly reached speeds over 100mph and went more than 30 miles with troopers in pursuit.

One trooper had to drop out of the chase because he was running out of gas. Another trooper took over and eventually opened fire.

The motorcyclist was hit in the leg.

He said he ran because he was driving on a suspended license and did not want to go to jail.

Texas Rangers are investigating the case.

Fallen Bellaire officer, bystander remembered on Christmas Day

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It started as a car chase, but it ended with bullets flying and two families left grieving on Christmas. Police say a Belliare police officer and an innocent bystander became the victims of a shootout in southwest Houston Monday morning.

The deadly confrontation happened in the parking lot of an auto shop on Bellaire Boulevard. Corporal Jimmie Norman, 53, was working Christmas Eve so he could be off on Christmas Day, to be with his family.

A memorial has sprung up as a sign of support in this community, as the Bellaire Police Department mourns at Christmas. Harlem Harold Lewis, 21, is the accused killer. Investigators say Lewis also fatally shot Terry Taylor, the owner and general manager of a nearby Maaco shop.

The deadly chain of events all began with a traffic stop that turned into a brief chase and eventually ended with the shootings of both Norman and Taylor. Police say Taylor ran out of his shop to help Norman and died in that parking lot.

"We're devastated by the loss," said Bellaire Police Department Chief Byron Holloway. "We ask that you keep his family and the family of the other victim in your thoughts."

"I feel so bad for those families, especially at Christmas," said Leslie Hokanson, whose car was struck. "I feel bad for all the families, including the shooter, who made a horrible choice."

Corporal Norman, a 24 year veteran, is the first Bellaire officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty.

Lewis, the suspected gunman, has gunshot wounds from backup officers who responded and arrested him. He was taken to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical but stable condition. Officials say he is expected to survive and has been charged with capital murder of a police officer, murder and felony evading in a motor vehicle.

Driver dies after hitting guardrail on Southwest Freeway

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- A driver died overnight after crashing into a guardrail on the Southwest Freeway feeder road.

The southbound feeder road of Highway 59 just before Beltway 8 had been closed for the police investigation of the deadly accident, but it reopened at around 5:15am.

Houston police say at around 2:30am the 37-year-old man drove his car off the exit ramp, through the barricades and ended up on the feeder road.

With the amount of damage to the vehicle and the guardrail, police say it appears the driver was exceeded the posted speed limit of 60 miles per hour.

"We don't have any witnesses who actually saw what happened, but evidence here at the scene indicates that he was about to take the north-south ramp onto Beltway 8 when for some reason, failed to drive in a single lane and struck the guardrail," said Sgt. I Izaguirre with the Houston Police Department.

At this time, police say there are no signs of impairment.

"He was wearing his seatbelt. There is no indication at this time that alcohol was involved. There is no alcohol inside the vehicle, we didn't smell any odor of alcohol," Sgt. Izaguirre said.

No other passengers were in the car with him at the time.

Strong cold front and windstorm arrive, but warm weather returns for Christmas

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- After record breaking high temperatures yesterday, a cold, blustery day is hitting the area today and tomorrow. The strong cold front arrived overnight with a line of showers and storms, and sent temperatures down into the mid-50s shortly before sunrise.

This time, the wind will be a bigger story than the cold. Winds behind the front will blow out of the northwest at 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph near the coast. Gale warnings are up along the coast for this morning and 'low water advisories' have been posted for Galveston and Matagorda Bays, as the strong winds shove water out of the bays and into the Gulf. Tides will run 1-2 feet below normal, which will make navigating the bay and ship channel more treacherous.

Once the winds settle down tonight, expect a widespread light freeze across southeast Texas tomorrow morning as astronomical winter officially begins (5:12am local time).

The run up to Christmas looks very warm after that, but a strong cold front arriving on or around Christmas Day will make it feel like winter again later in the week. There is still a tremendous amount of uncertainty with the timing and strength of the winter storm next week. Stay tuned.

Strong winds cause exploding transformers, power outages around Houston area

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The strong winds overnight led to exploding transformers and power outages across town.

We caught several explosions from our Tower Cam HD above the ABC13 studios in southwest Houston. You'll need to watch out for intersections that do not have lights because of power outages.

CenterPoint Energy reports just under 14,000 homes and businesses are without power as of 9:45am. That's down from a peak of close to 61,000 at around 3am.

Those outages are scattered from southeast Houston to The Woodlands.

Meteorologist Casey Curry says wind advisories are posted across our area today. Look for widespread 40-50mph wind gusts. One wind gust was clocked in at 61 miles per hour at around 3:45 this morning in Bayou Vista.

Be careful on the roads this morning as you may run into road debris throughout your morning drive.

Some ABC13 viewers have sent us photos of the power outages and wind damage across the area. We've seen tree branches in the Heights near the North Freeway and North Main, as well as a downed tree in a neighborhood off Beechnut in southwest Harris County.

You can send your photos to news@abc13.com, but please don't put yourself in harm's way to get the shot.

Many of you are also talking about the outages from the wind on Twitter and Facebook. One of our viewers writes that electricity went out at around 4:30am in Spring. Another says the power remains out in Magnolia. There are also reports of outages on our Facebook page from Friendswood and the Gulfgate area.

We want to hear from you about conditions where you are. Post to our Facebook page or Tweet your report with the hashtag #abc13.

Big rig jack-knifes on Katy Freeway near I-45

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- An 18-wheeler jack-knifed overnight on a section of the Katy Freeway that's notorious for accidents.

The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed early this morning but have since reopened.

It happened at around 3:30 this morning near the I-10 and I-45 freeway split. Police tell us the 18-wheeler actually hit the other side of the freeway first, then the truck jack-knifed and slid across the freeway, striking the guardrail near the Taylor exit.

A heavy duty wrecker arrived on scene to remove the big rig from the westbound lanes of I-10.

The driver tells us it was raining at the time of the wreck. He did not say how fast he was going when he wrecked. All he said was he simply lost control and this was the end result. He added he is just luckily he and his passenger are okay.

The driver wouldn't go on camera for us, but his passenger did and said he woke up from the impact.

"Everything was crumbling down on me. I was hysterical. I didn't know what to do. I was waking up from my sleep, so I was thinking we're either running over a cliff or we're hitting somebody else," said passenger Anthony Ricks.

Bathroom graffiti threat lands teen in felony trouble

KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- An 18-year-old high school student is facing a felony charge over a threat involving guns, in the form of bathroom graffiti.

Last Wednesday, the principal of Kingwood High School, following up on a tip, discovered threatening graffiti on a bathroom wall. Court documents state that the drawing was of a gun pointing to a stick figure, with the name of an Humble ISD police officer, and stated "Kill Officer West." Other drawings also showed violence against officers, and one writing referred to shooting everyone at KHS.

Officials reviewed surveillance video from the hallway outside the restroom and interviewed witnesses to narrow down a time frame in which the graffiti appeared. They pulled Derick Richard Montelongo out of class and reportedly discovered in his possession several drawings that matched the ones in the restroom, as well as a marker matching the graffiti.

Montelongo, 18, is charged with exhibition of firearms, a felony charge. Bail has been set at $10,000 for the case.

Armed bandit steals $50,000 from armored truck guard

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An armored truck driver was targeted in an afternoon robbery in the Meyerland area.

It happened at about 2:30pm at the Randalls grocery store at 4800 W. Bellfort near S. Post Oak Road. A Brinks Security employee was servicing an ATM inside the store when an armed suspect approached. He pointed a gun at the guard and demanded money. He got away with the guard's weapon and $50,000.

Police say that while the suspect did point a gun at the guard, no shots were fired, despite earlier reports.

The grocery store and bank remained open all afternoon. Only a small area around the ATM was affected. Regular shoppers at the store are shocked by what happened.

"It's a shame," said shopper Don Degen. "It seems like there are becoming more and more robberies and hijackings and things. I just don't understand it."

Investigators say there is just one suspect. He is described as a black male between 25 and 30 years old, 5'7" to 5'9", with a slim build and medium complexion. He was wearing a tan or off-white long sleeve button down shirt, blue jeans, a baseball cap and sunglasses. His getaway vehicle was a white Ford F-250 pickup truck.

FBI and other law enforcement officials are reviewing surveillance videos.

Lawmaker wants schools to be able to put up Christmas and Hanukkah displays without fear of legal action

Transitional home for former inmates raises concerns

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A facility that helps women recently released from prison is under debate, as the location of Angela House is being considered.

The archdiocese is considering moving the home from its current location in north Houston to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on the southeast side, and not everyone is on board with that idea.

Delfina Echavarria is raising her four daughters across the street from to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but now, she's worried.

She said, "I'm just scared of the unknown, what it will bring to the area, to the neighborhood."

She's upset because the archdiocese is planning to move a transitional women's home to the Mount Carmel campus. Angela House is currently on the city's north side, where it houses 10 to 15 women recently released from prison. Sister Maureen O'Connell is the program's founder.

"This is important work," she said. "Women who choose to make a change in their lives need all the support they can get."

Supporters point out all the women who would live at the home have been thoroughly screened before they can participate in the program, but the residents nearby say this is simply not what they want.

June Adams, a concerned neighbor, told the Houston City Council, "We support sisters' ministries, but our primary concerns are for the safety of the children and the many elderly people who live in that neighborhood."

Both sides took their concerns to city hall this week. Council member James Rodriguez supports the neighbors, but admits there may be no legal way to stop the project.

"Hopefully they'll be good neighbors, but I still oppose this facility," Rodriguez said. "There's no city money. This is not a city project. This is brought to us by the archdiocese."

Frustrated neighbors say they vow to return to city hall or protest anywhere else they can. Late Wednesday afternoon the archdiocese released a statement that said the cardinal supports Angela House, its mission and its move to Mount Carmel.

HISD police arrest student with gun at Sterling High School

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 14-year-old male student was arrested Wednesday after being found in possession of a loaded handgun at Sterling High School.

The arrest was made at 10:48am, roughly 10 minutes after campus-based Houston Independent School District police officers received a tip from the Houston Police Department that the student may have a gun.

Houston police were investigating an allegation that the student used the weapon to threaten an individual off campus on Tuesday afternoon. The HISD police officers took the student into custody without incident and confiscated the weapon after searching him.

The student told HISD police he was carrying the weapon to protect himself from gang members in the neighborhood surrounding the school.

Sterling High School parents are being informed about the incident by phone today, officials say, but we spoke with at least one mother at the school who hadn't heard.

"I'm a little upset because I haven't gotten a call or anything as yet," she said. "Now that I'm here, I'm hearing all this."

"This is my fourth year here, I'm a senior. Nothing like this ever happened before," a student told Eyewitness News.

The student is a juvenile and his name is not being released. Appropriate disciplinary action is being taken, and the incident has been referred to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for criminal prosecution.

Driver killed in METRO bus wreck in SE Houston

Police are investigating a wreck that killed a METRO bus driver in southeast Houston Tuesday evening. Police are investigating a wreck that killed a METRO bus driver in southeast Houston Tuesday evening.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Officials say a METRO bus driver was killed in a wreck in southeast Houston Tuesday evening.

METRO police and safety personnel are investigating the accident that occurred on the service road of the Gulf Freeway just north of Howard shortly before 7pm Tuesday.

Preliminary information shows METRO bus operator James Brooks lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a concrete traffic sign pole along the Gulf Freeway's feeder road. A witness reported to investigators that a vehicle made a right turn in front of another vehicle that was ahead of the bus. Brooks reportedly swerved to avoid rear-ending that vehicle, lost control of the bus and then struck the pole.

The bus was not in service and there were no patrons onboard the bus. Investigators state the bus was not equipped with cameras.

METRO staff sends its condolences to the family of 63-year-old Brooks, who had been part of the METRO family since 1983.

"While spending time with James' colleagues at the Polk Facility this morning it became very clear that he was loved and respected. He would always try to make people smile. He cared deeply about his own family and his METRO family," said METRO President & CEO George Greanias.

METRO officials are offering support to Brooks' family. Crisis counseling will be made available to all employees at the Polk Bus Operating Facility where Brooks worked.

Harris County commissioners spare job of woman battling cancer

Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman who's worked for Harris County for more than 20 years is suffering from cancer and is too sick to go to work. Her family claims the county had threatened to fire her, but now she's getting support from the county and the commissioners.

It's a situation that could happen to anyone. Luckily, this woman had family, friends and strangers who care very deeply about her.

Emilio Trevino's voice breaks as he introduces Harris County commissioners to his mother, Francis Thurman.

"I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, a rare type of breast cancer," she told commissioners.

Francis is currently undergoing an aggressive chemotherapy regimen. She can't eat, she can't drive and she can't work.

"At a certain point, you don't want to do chemo anymore," she said. "You get sick, you're nauseated and you're hungry but you can't eat."

Francis has worked here at the county's voter registrar's office for 23 years. But she just learned she could lose her job for taking too many sick days. She was told she had four days to come back or she would lose her job and health insurance.

"My mother is a fighter and responsible employee," Emilio told commissioners.

Francis' son and her co-workers went to Commissioners Court Tuesday to plead with count leaders to give her the time she needs to recover. And Team Francis got what it came for.

"You know, we're family," Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said. "For the tax assessor, right before Christmas, to say in four days you're terminated, that's just not appropriate."

County officials promised to work with Francis and look into changing policies to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

"I feel so blessed and I would like to encourage others that don't give up. Just reach out, and if someone doesn't reach back, keep reaching, keep reaching," Francis told us.

Now the county hasn't come up with specific plans to deal with this situation but Francis says just knowing that they're working on it gives her relief. She says knowing that will make it easier for her to get through treatment.

Missouri City man convicted of illegal possession of bald eagle

VICTORIA, TX (KTRK) -- Sam Mathew, 53, of Missouri City, has been convicted of illegally possessing a bald eagle, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced. Mathew was indicted in May of this year for one count of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).

Prosecutors say there was an active bald eagle nest located on Mathew's property and he had been planning to capture a young eagle for the purposed of training it in falconry. Mathew testified in his defense and claimed the bird was out of its nest and on a tree limb, and that he had instructed two ranch hands to remove it.

However, testimony indicated the bird was actually still in its nest when they were about to capture it. The eagle apparently got scared and fell out of the tree at that time and Mathew and one of the ranch hands caught it.

US Fish and Wildlife Service officials learned of the eagle and that the nest housing it had apparently been disturbed and went to the residence. Upon arrival, they noticed there were fresh tire tracks around the tree and several broken branches as well as a set of tree climbing gear with ropes.

The MBTA does allow the possession of nongame birds, but only if they are injured, sick or orphaned and if they are immediately transported to be rehabilitated. Mathew claimed he thought the bird was injured and was rescuing it to take it to a rehabilitator. The jury disagreed and found him guilty as charged. The jury returned its verdict late Tuesday after two days of trial and approximately an hour of deliberations.

Mathew was permitted to remain on bond pending his sentencing hearing to be held in February 2013. At that time, he faces up to six months in federal prison and a maximum $15,000 fine.

Parents of murdered children pray for CT families

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- While most parents hope what happened at Sandy Hook never happens to them, the sad reality is there are parents all over our area whose children have been murdered. They've created a support network that helps them cope.

We were with parents who look forward to the third Tuesday of every month, when they know they'll be among friends who truly know what they've been through. But on this Tuesday night, their hearts ached even more.

In the basement of Grace United Methodist in the Heights, there's a group no one wants to join. But it's also one everyone is grateful exists.

"The holidays are some of the roughest times," mother Carolyn Hardin said.

Parents of murdered children met Tuesday night for their monthly meeting, not only carrying their pain of losing a child but also weighted down with more grief.

"It's been almost 15 years, I still hurt everyday of my life," Hardin said.

"It's like reliving it again, except my son was 23, and these poor innocent babies were just babies, they were angels," mother Maria Castro said.

Sure the circumstances are worlds apart. But they all can relate.

"I think about my son and I know what the mothers and fathers are going through," Hardin said.

Each mother and father here shared their story and also said a few words about the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary, starting with a prayer.

Because for most here, like Hardin, if she could be there she would.

"I'd like to just be able to hold them and tell them we're here for you," she said.

There is a chapter of Parents of Murdered Children in New York, but it's near Newtown. Parents here hope families in Connecticut will take advantage of it.

One of two teens accused of graffiti threats at Kingwood High School appears in court

KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- One of two Kingwood High School students faced a judge today on graffiti charges. The 18-year-olds were arrested after racist messages and threatening graffiti were found at the high school.

These are two separate cases of graffiti in the bathrooms at the high school, each disturbing in their own way and both ending in felony charges against students.

School officials say one student drew a picture of a gun and wrote threats on bathroom walls at Kingwood High School. That student was in court to hear the charge against him -- a 3rd degree felony of exhibition of a firearm -- for the threatening graffiti police believe he drew on the walls of a Kingwood High School bathroom.

Derick Richard Montelongo, a senior at Kingwood High, is behind bars on a $250,000 bond. If he is released, he will have to wear a GPS monitor and have no contact with the officer that prosecutors say he threatened at the high school.

Last Wednesday, prosecutors say Montelongo drew a picture of a gun pointing to a stick figure with the name Officer West, saying kill Officer West and "shoot everyone at 3:07."

Assistant District Attorney Mary McFaden said, "Any type of threat in this day and age, whether or not officer or civilian, we take any complainant as serious as another."

In a separate incident just two days later on December 14, student Trent McKay Skinner was arrested for a similar offense. Police believe he scrawled neo-Nazi symbols on bathroom walls and referred to the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas. Skinner is charged with graffiti on school property.

Kingwood High School put a note out to parents saying the Montelongo situation was taken care of immediately and involved no real weapons.

"Last week, two boys' restrooms were defaced with graffiti that was offensive and threatening. The graffiti in one of the restrooms included a drawing of a gun and a message against police and the school. Acting immediately, we were able to quickly identify the student involved and conduct a search to determine that this was a case of vandalism with no actual weapons involved. We then worked with Humble ISD Police and the Harris County District Attorney's Office to ensure that the incident was appropriately addressed. That investigation resulted today in the arrest of two students, who each face a charge related to defacing school property with graffiti. Our school will not tolerate vandalism, graffiti, threatening or offensive messages. Thank you for your support of a safe and positive school environment."

In both cases, surveillance video showed the suspects going into the restrooms, and police discovered drawings of the graffiti on the students.

Dead man found in driver's seat of still-running pickup truck

By Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a pickup truck Wednesday morning in northwest Houston.

The man was discovered in the 5300 block of Lost Forest near Pinemont and Highway 290. According to investigators at the scene, the victim has a gunshot wound to the back of the head and at this time they are treating this as a homicide.

Neighbors reported seeing the truck parked there at about 2am. They said the truck was running at the time.

But it wasn't until later in the morning, when they approached the vehicle and knocked on the window, did they realize something wasn't right. They also realized the truck was still running at that time.

One of those neighbors then opened the door to find the man dead inside his truck.

Witness Roland Mendiola said, "He told me, hey there is a guy parked out in front, he looks like he is passed out and I said he is probably just drunk."

So far police have not released any information on a motive or any suspect information at this time. But they do tell us the victim appears to be in his 20s and no weapon was found in the vehicle.

Jewelry may help ID burned victim found on rural property

FULSHEAR, TX (KTRK) -- Police in Fulshear are searching for answers after a woman's burned body was discovered in a rural area on Monday.

Fulshear police are still trying to identify the remains. They say the woman is in her 20s to 30s and was about 5' to 5'2" tall. But the victim is burned so badly they cannot tell her race.

On a gravel road just off Katy-Fulshear Road is a spot of scarred ground where it appears something burned. Fulshear police say a ranch hand discovered a badly burned body there on Monday morning.

It's a rural area where the only residents immediately nearby are cattle. It's a well-traveled road during the day. People driving along the dirt road there say this shakes their sense of safety.

"It's such a remote area," said neighbor Michelle Thompson. "You think this area of Houston is safe out here."

Investigators say it's not clear how long the body had been there. It appears it was burned at the location. There are no missing women in Fulshear and none in Fort Bend County. Detectives are working with other agencies to see if any evidence might link to any of their missing persons cases.

The victim found in the field was wearing something which investigators hope might be the key to figuring out her identity.

Fulshear Police Chief Kenny Seymour said, "We're working on a piece of jewelry that the victim had on that might be distinctive and might stick out in somebody's mind."

One other distinctive feature they say is that the woman had extensive dental work. Investigators say she had a number of veneers. She was wearing jeans with a red top and a belt with several metal rivet designs.

Based on the autopsy, officials believe her cause of death was possibly blunt trauma to the body and possibly strangulation.

If you have any information which can help detectives figure out who the woman is, you can contact the Fulshear Police Department at 281-346-2202, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office at 281-341-4665 or Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

Man escapes burning SE Houston home just in time

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- Residents at a southeast Houston home had to run for their lives when a fire broke out overnight.

The fire broke out on Cullen near Polk in southeast Houston around 1:25 this morning. Firefighters arrived and found the duplex on fire with the roof collapsing. A resident of the duplex says he woke up to heavy smoke and heavy flames when he looked out his window this morning. He then called 911 for help.

Neighbors initially thought the homeowner was inside at the time, but when firefighters arrived they determined that person was not inside when the fire started.

"They said the house next store was on fire so I ran out of the house. They made everybody get out of the house and they almost caught my apartment on fire," said neighbor Michael Richerson. "If they wouldn't have beat on the door, I'd have burned up."

Firefighters say the fire appears to have started on the front porch and are calling it very suspicious.

Arson investigators are looking into the cause.

Reliant Stadium to get new HD video screen displays in Reliant Stadium

Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- Reliant Stadium has hosted some big moments in this record breaking season, but if city officials want Houston to host another Super Bowl, the relatively new stadium will need some upgrades.

The upgrades we're talking about are a pair of "super screens" that would rival those in Cowboy Stadium. That kind of technology won't come cheap, but commissioners say the upgrade is necessary because the current screens are more than 11 years old.

"It's going to be 40 percent bigger than that screen in Cowboy Stadium," said Leroy Shafer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Commissioners with the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation just approved a plan to build two new scoreboards here at Reliant. Each end zone will feature a screen that's 52 feet high and 277 feet wide, so there will be plenty of space for instant replays, statistics, and commercials.

"Certainly this is going to be an integrel component to that bid for the Super Bowl we present to the NFL in May. They're looking for experience, the experience for the guests coming in here," Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes said.

The new boards are expected to cost about $16 million. Commissioners are still negotiating the details but tell us they will be paid for with county restoration funds. The Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will loan the county money up-front.

"The money that goes into this R&R fund comes from hotel/motel tax, rental car tax, from the ticket tax," Shafer said.

"So is there any chance that ticket prices could go up to help pay for this?" we asked Shafer.

"No, not at all," he said.

If you remember, Minute Maid Park got its own HD screen last year. It's 54 feet high and 124 feet wide. But did the screen really improve the experience for fans?

"It's hard to say what people come here to see, because a lot of people come to be entertained, some people come to see baseball," Astros Production Co-Ordinator David Congdon said.

Construction is expected to begin in April, and the screens should be ready to go in time for next year's football season.

Police investigating fatal shooting near TSU campus

Police investigate a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near the campus of TSU. Police investigate a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near the campus of TSU.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An intruder was fatally shot by an apartment complex resident near the Texas Southern University campus last night, say police.

It happened around 8:30pm on Wentworth and Ennis in Houston's Third Ward. Police say a man, who is a TSU student, was in an apartment complex with his girlfriend and two-year-old child when he heard a loud noise outside.

When he went to check it out, an armed man forced his way into the apartment.

"They heard a loud commotion from the back of the apartment,' said Officer Christopher Hassig with the Houston Police Department. "He wasn't entirely certain if it was a window or a door. He went to investigate and the suspect pushed his way in."

The resident shot and killed the intruder. Police say it does not appear the two knew each other.

The resident was taken downtown to be questioned. It's unclear at this time if he will be charged.
