Mass adoption ceremony performed in downtown Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- This Christmas will be extra special for almost 90 children who now have new permanent families.

A mass adoption ceremony was held Tuesday at the Juvenile Justice Center in downtown Houston. The children range in age from one to 17. Some were adopted by relatives, others have brand new parents.

The Haight family adopted a fourth son, giving the couple seven children now.

"It's amazing," said Charity Haight. "We've been waiting a long time and finally the day is here and we're going to go out for pizza now. That's what he wanted to do."

"You get a lot of people in a little place, but, you know, basically everybody's got a buddy and they just love hanging around each other," David Haight said.

Children's Protective Services officials say there are more than 1,700 children in its care waiting to be adopted.

HPD officer fatally shoots man near downtown Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston police officer shot and killed an unarmed man, whose family says he was mentally ill. Investigators say the man had already attacked three people, but neighbors still wonder why he had to be shot.

It all started with the suspect breaking into a neighbor's home in the middle of the night. But even that neighbor thinks the officer could have handled the situation differently.

Neighbors along Sampson at Reeves in the Third Ward say that Kenneth Releford was a handyman in the area. They say they knew he was mentally ill and they claim they were trying to tell police that when he was shot. Now the man who called 911 is questioning whether he made the right decision.

For the family who lives in a house on Francis Street, they are working to put things back to normal.

"I feel like it's my fault because i called, but I wasn't expecting it to go this far," said neighbor Roger Abbs.

Abbs, 61, was emotional when he recalled how he and his 87-year-old father were inside their house Wednesday night along with his nephews, ages 12 and 14, when all of a sudden their front door was kicked in by Releford, their 28-year-old neighbor and friend.

"It was something wrong with him, I believe," said one witness.

Police say Releford, whose father told Eyewitness News his son suffered from schizophrenia, got into a struggle with the elderly grandfather after police say the suspect walked into a back bedroom and groped one of the boys.

Abbs called 911 as Releford left the house. Minutes later police arrived and, according to HPD, an officer told Releford to stop.

"At that time the suspect continues to advance towards him very quickly on foot, with his left hand behind his back the entire time," said Houston Police Department spokesperson John Cannon. "The suspect is probably within a little more than arm length away, about five feet or so, and that's when the officer discharges his duty weapon and strikes the suspect."

But witnesses say they saw something different.

One witness said, "All I know is that the boy had his hands in sight."

"He had his hands up like this," witness Lisa Arowshere said.

Now neighbors and the suspect's father are questioning if deadly force was necessary.

"To me he could have tased him, to me, other than shoot," said Kenneth's father Audry Releford.

"People out here saying please don't shoot him because he is mentally retarded, even the man whose house that he kicked the door in," Arowshere recalled.

Releford died at the hospital. Police say he ignored repeated demands when Officer J. Roseman told him to stop. We asked why Officer Rosemon didn't use a stun gun. We were told that, as always in officer-involved shootings, that's under investigation. We also asked if someone from HPD's mental health crisis response team responded to the scene and officials confirm that no one did.

HFD: Two-alarm apartment complex fire that injured firefighter downtown Houston ruled arson

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives at the Houston Fire Department say a two-alarm blaze that gutted a north Houston apartment complex early Friday morning was intentionally set by someone.

The raging fire was captured on home video. Flames shot high into the air as firefighters worked frantically put out the blaze at the complex on Flecher at Carl. No one was hurt but several units were damaged.

"It was 20 feet up in the air when I saw it and it went out of control," said Alfonso Salazar, who lives nearby and shot the video he sent to us through our iWitness reports.

We were there as firefighters rushed into the apartment complex at about 5am. They were already in the area responding to several trash fires.

"They were busy with these trash fires when somebody came running up and said there's a house on fire," said Joe Evans with the Houston Fire Department.

The flames were so high and the smoke so thick that one firefighter had to be wheeled out on a stretcher.

"Houston arson division will be talking to all of the people and interviewing everybody within the three-block area," said Evans.

He says the fire started on the front porch and quickly spread to attic and nine apartment units. Residents inside worked together to get out in time.

Tanea Perez woke up her mom and sisters.

"My mom and my sisters, they went out because it was like a fire," she said.

And even though they're happy to be alive, many residents wonder where they'll go from here.

"Where am i going to go? I'm going to have to get another place," said resident James Torres. "I've been laid off from work."

Right now, authorities have not identified any suspects.

Race for the Cure takes over downtown Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Downtown Houston went pink Saturday morning for the 22nd annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Tens of thousands of people walked and ran to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment.

"You've got so many people and everyone is touched by this somehow and we're all in it to win it," said race participant Connie Dove.

An estimated 30,000 people packed downtown Houston for the city's annual event.

"We've raised about two million dollars," said Justine Schulerud with the Race for the Cure. "Our goal every year is about three million, so we're getting there. The money goes to research, education and screening right here in the Houston area."

Some who came out are cancer survivors. Others are supporting friends and family. Still others came out to raise awareness of a disease that kills nearly half a million people every year.

"I'm a new survivor," said participant Diandra Domino. "In fact, I'm still going through therapy and treatments, but I'm here to give my support and pass the word so everyone can be aware of breast cancer."

"We want to be future doctors and we want to help the world so we figured we'd start out here," said participant Brittany Aleman.

Arthur Fano came out to honor of his mom's battle with cancer.

"I'm very proud that she survived it," he said. "I'm just proud of her."

"It's a hard fight and if you can beat this you can do anything," said survivor Carolyn Leeds.

It's a promise that a community working together can make a difference, one step at a time.

Plane makes emergency landing in downtown Conroe

Conroe police say this plane made an emergency landing on the streets of downtown Conroe on Tuesday night Conroe police say this plane made an emergency landing on the streets of downtown Conroe on Tuesday night

CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- A plane made an emergency landing in the streets of downtown Conroe, according to the Conroe Police Department.

The incident happened at around 9:50pm Tuesday at 6th Street at Davis.

The pilot has less 100 hours of flying time and has only had her pilot license for about three months when she came face to face with an emergency no pilot ever wants to see.

Officials say 22-year-old Sarah Chantal Rovner took off last night from West Houston Airport on assignment with the Civil Air Patrol. About six miles out her plane lost power.

At first Rovner hoped to glide back to the airport, but the plane was not going to make it. So Rovner decided to land on East Davis Street in Conroe. Once she touched down Rovner's plane hit a small power line, then after turning onto 6th Street the plane knocked down a sign. The wing was sheared off after she moved out of the way of an oncoming car.

"The one thing that I would say is that I'm looking forward to flying with her," said Lt. Col. Bob Beeley with the Civil Air Patrol. "She is an excellent pilot. She did a good job. She did what she was trained to do."

The plane belongs to the Air Force and will be turned over to the insurance company. Investigators still don't know why her engine lost power.

Houston rings in 2012 with downtown celebration

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houstonians were invited to a big party Saturday night at Discovery Green in downtown Houston to celebrate the new year.

An outrageous 3D light show entertained the crowd, and the highlight of the night was the parade by the Glo Krewe from the art car collection. No other celebration in the country includes this dazzling array of original, rolling illuminated sculptures.

Houstonian and inspirational rapper Baby Jay took the stage and country music star Delbert McClinton headlined the show.

More than 25,000 people showed up for this year's celebration.

At midnight, revelers welcomed 2012 with a countdown and fireworks off the top of the George R. Brown Convention Center.

This is the first time in 25 years that fireworks have been shot off the convention center's roof.

The event also included magicians, jugglers and even pets on wheels.

"We really wanted it to be something that was Houston-centric. Wanted it to be cool and fun and unlike other cities. Something that we could say, 'This is our own. This is very Houston.' I think we've done a great job with that," Angie Bertinot said.

Of course, not everyone went out to Discovery Green. We found many out buying balloons for their own parties Saturday.

At Party Boy near The Heights, they told us they inflated more than 2,500 balloons on Saturday alone. Business was also booming at fireworks stands around the greater Houston area as folks spent hundreds of dollars on fireworks to shoot off before, during and after midnight.

Despite the burn ban being lifted, authorities do caution that it is still illegal to shoot fireworks within the city limits and even in some locations around Harris County. Fines can range up to $2,000 each.

If you need help getting to or from your New Year's Eve party, METRO is offering a safe alternative to driving. They're providing rides for free to help everyone get home safely. It ends at 6am Sunday on both the bus and rail system.

Another alternative for intoxicated New Year's revelers this holiday weekend is the AAA Tipsy Tow program. AAA is offering to tow drivers and their vehicles for free up to 10 miles. Drivers would have to pay for any distance past the initial 10 miles. The service is open to the public. You do not have to be a AAA member to take part in the program. Tipsy Tow runs through 6am Sunday. Motorists can call 1-800-TRIPLE-A (1-800-874-7532) for a lift.

If you were at New Year's Eve Live and took photos, we want to see them! Send your pictures to news@abc13.com or upload them here and we'll post them online!
