2-alarm fire destroys apartments in NW Harris County
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- More than a dozen families are homeless after a two-alarm fire overnight in northwest Harris County. The fire started around 9pm Friday at the Timbers Apartments on Gulf Bank near Antoine.
The swift blaze spread to two buildings at the complex. Adults and children ran for their lives to escape the flames.
No one was hurt, but the fire damaged about 16 units.
The Houston Red Cross is helping assist families who lost their homes.
It's not yet clear how the fire started.
Houston police said two officers near the fire were forced to use a Taser on two men who attacked them.
The officers were blocking off streets near the fire when they saw four men fighting.
They said they went to break it up, and that's when two of the men attacked the officers who used their Tasers to subdue the suspects.
The officers were not hurt and the entire group was arrested.

Some Ft. Bend Co. residents battling plan for low-income apartments
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Some neighbors in Fort Bend County are in a fight, battling a plan for low-income apartments near their neighborhood. They say the apartments just don't fit in the area near the Southwest Freeway and Grand Parkway.
Ever since Sugar Land City Council approved plans to move forward with apartments near the new Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters baseball team, other communities are looking harder at plans for apartments and not liking what they see.
In a Ft. Bend Co. subdivision so new, houses are still under construction and some streets have yet to be built. The one thing you don't see is apartments. Not yet.
"How is that going to affect traffic an how is that going to affect home values?" said Sugar Land resident Farha Ahmed.
But under a general plan between the developer and the city of Sugar Land, apartments are coming.
"We negotiated with the developers to put a cap on the number of multi-family units they could include and that cap is 600," said Doug Adolph with the city of Sugar Land.
That's not what Ahmed wants to see in this neighborhood.
"They're very concerned. They own a lot of high-value homes," said Ahmed.
The homes in River Stone start at $200,000 on up into the millions. And apartments don't fit in here, Ahmed and other residents say.
River Stone is currently outside of Sugar Land city limits, although there are plans to annex River Stone in the coming years, and 600 new apartments is a part of those plans.
A spokesperson for the city of Sugar Land says city council does not plan to take up the issue right now and says apartments in River Stone isn't going to change the future face of the city.
"Back in 2000, the percentage of multi-family to overall dwellings in the city of Sugar Land was just under 9 percent, when the city's ultimately built out, that percentage will remain at 9 percent," said Adolph.
But Ahmed says the neighbors don't feel that way and they'll be pushing the issue.
"They feel the apartments close by are going to affect the appraised value of the home, but also traffic and safety," said Ahmed.
Johnson Development Corp. did not return our phone calls.
The River Stone committee will have its first meeting Thursday night at 7pm in Sugar Land to talk about the possibility of apartments.

Neighbors rescue woman stuck on balcony of burning apartments
Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- You don't get better neighbors than some of the residents of a north Houston apartment complex. They saved a woman from an overnight fire.
Firefighters got to the complex on Northborough near Meadowfern at around 11pm to find flames shooting from roof. Six units in all were up in flames and five of those were occupied.
Residents of the complex jumped into action before firefighters arrived, some even saving the life of an elderly woman stuck on her second-floor balcony.
"We stayed on the other side. I saw smoke coming from the apartment and I heard someone hollering," said resident Anthony Cornelous. "And my brother-in-law, we had jumped the gate. The lady, when she jumped, we were there to catch her."
About 50 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control. Fortunately no one was hurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire torches mail room, office at NW Houston apartments
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A fire at a northwest Houston apartment complex overnight may have started in the mail room. It happened at the complex off Keith Harrow near Queenston. Firefighters tell us it started in a trash can in the mail room and quickly spread through the leasing office and clubhouse.
Several mail boxes were burned and the flames shot through the roof. No one was hurt.
Arson investigators are now looking into the fire.

Two men stabbed at apartments in SW Houston
The attack happened outside an apartment on Maplecrest in southwest Houston. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Investigators are trying to determine the motive behind a double stabbing in southwest Houston last night. Two men were attacked outside an apartment on Maplecrest at Beechnut. They were approached by two suspects and both were stabbed in the abdomen.
Officers don't think the stabbing is gang-related and nothing was stolen. The victims are said to be in the hospital in stable condition.

Three-alarm fire breaks out at vacant apartments
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Fire Department is currently battling a 3-alarm fire in northwest Houston. HFD was dispatched to the vacant apartment fire in the 4700 block of Airline at about 4pm. Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes and found heavy fire coming from the structure.
A second alarm was called about 4:20pm with a third alarm called for more manpower just before 5pm.
The fire was contained to one building, and no injuries have been reported.
About 35 HFD units are on scene and arson investigators have been requested to determine the cause. The Houston Police Department is also assisting with traffic control.

Cy-Fair apartments damaged in 2-alarm blaze
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A two-alarm fire damaged an apartment complex in the Cypress area Sunday. The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department was called to the apartments in the 8700 block of Point Park at Point North West around 3:30pm Sunday. When they arrived, flames were shooting from the second and third floors of the complex.
First responders made a fast attack, but the flames were spreading through a common attic in the building, officials said. A second alarm was pulled for additional manpower and resources.
Officials said about eight to 12 units were affected. Six units were damaged by fire, and all 12 apartments sustained extensive water damage.
One firefighter had breathing problems and had to be rescued. He was treated at the scene and released.
No other injuries were reported.
Cy-Fair VFD is working with apartment managers and Red Cross to relocate displaced residents.
