HFD: Two-alarm apartment complex fire that injured firefighter downtown Houston ruled arson

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives at the Houston Fire Department say a two-alarm blaze that gutted a north Houston apartment complex early Friday morning was intentionally set by someone.

The raging fire was captured on home video. Flames shot high into the air as firefighters worked frantically put out the blaze at the complex on Flecher at Carl. No one was hurt but several units were damaged.

"It was 20 feet up in the air when I saw it and it went out of control," said Alfonso Salazar, who lives nearby and shot the video he sent to us through our iWitness reports.

We were there as firefighters rushed into the apartment complex at about 5am. They were already in the area responding to several trash fires.

"They were busy with these trash fires when somebody came running up and said there's a house on fire," said Joe Evans with the Houston Fire Department.

The flames were so high and the smoke so thick that one firefighter had to be wheeled out on a stretcher.

"Houston arson division will be talking to all of the people and interviewing everybody within the three-block area," said Evans.

He says the fire started on the front porch and quickly spread to attic and nine apartment units. Residents inside worked together to get out in time.

Tanea Perez woke up her mom and sisters.

"My mom and my sisters, they went out because it was like a fire," she said.

And even though they're happy to be alive, many residents wonder where they'll go from here.

"Where am i going to go? I'm going to have to get another place," said resident James Torres. "I've been laid off from work."

Right now, authorities have not identified any suspects.

Funeral held for fallen Atascocita firefighter

HUMBLE, TX (KTRK) -- Funeral services were held Monday morning for an Atascocita volunteer firefighter who died during a training exercise in Beaumont.

Captain Neal Smith died last week from injuries he received during a specialized training course at the east Texas-area fall 'Smoke Diver' School.

The funeral got underway around 10am at the First Assembly of God in Humble. It began with a huge procession including about 150 fire trucks. One of those was carrying the body of Captain Smith. His family stood nearby as his flag-draped casket was brought down from the fire truck.

Captain Smith, a five-year veteran of the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department, was undergoing training earlier this month in Beaumont. Something went wrong and he died from his injuries suffered in a fire training field exercise.

The 46-year-old was surrounded by family when he was taken off life support.

Training for firefighters can be just as risky sometimes as fighting fires. According to the US Fire Administration, last year eight firefighters died during training.

A Georgia firefighter also became ill during the exercise but is recovering. The accident is under investigation.

Captain Smith is survived by his wife and two children.

Firefighter dies after collapsing while responding to call

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's a sad day for the Houston Fire Department as they mourn the loss of a veteran firefighter who died on the job Wednesday.

Right now, you can see flags outside fire stations across this city are at half staff as emergency workers mourn the loss of a longtime fire captain.

It was an emotional morning as hundreds of firefighters lined the streets escorting the body of Sr. Captain Thomas "Bill" Dillion to the Medical Examiner's Office.

"It's a tough day for the fire department. Anytime we lose one of our firefighters, it's a very difficult day," said Richard Mann, HFD Exec. Asst. Fire Chief.

Firefighters gathered at the hospital to show their support and form a 'wall of honor' as his body was loaded into the ambulance.

The 22-year veteran of HFD died in the line of duty while responding to a kitchen-related fire at a southwest Houston apartment complex on Cook Road on Wednesday morning. The fire was quickly contained, and the concern became the firefighter's health.

During a news conference Wednesday, HFD's fire chief said Capt. Dillion collapsed after experiencing chest pains. Several emergency workers tried administering CPR on the 49-year-old.

His children and ex-wife rushed to the West Houston Medial Center where Dillion was pronounced dead one hour after his collapse.

"It's a line of duty death because he is at work, and he is performing his duty. Unfortunately, in the American fire service, one of our primary causes of death is heart attacks. This may be one of those heart attacks that we have," said HFD Chief Terry Garrison. "We're at our fire station, we're relaxed, and then the alarm comes and we respond. We kind of go from 0 to 10 miles an hour in a very short period of time, and over years that has stress on your heart."

The fire chief says the investigation into Dillion's exact cause of death is ongoing.

Dillion was assigned to Station 69, but was working a fill-in shift at another station when the incident happened.

Comrades called Dillion a good friend and a good leader.

"We spend every minute of every day being leaders away from the fire ground and at the fire stations, and he'll be remembered for that. He was a good leader away from the fire ground and at the fire station every minute of every day he was on shift, he was a good leader," Mann said.

Among his family members, Dillion leaves behind three children.

The following statement was issued today by Jeff Caynon, president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association (HPFFA):
"The men and women of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association mourn the loss of Senior Captain Thomas W. ("Bill") Dillion. Senior Captain Dillion died today in the line of duty after fighting a fire at a southwest Houston apartment complex. He passed away after collapsing at the fire scene. Assigned to HFD Station 69, Senior Captain Dillion was an exemplary and well-respected firefighter during his 22-year HFD career. He is survived by three children. Memorial arrangements are pending.

"This tragic passing of Senior Captain Dillion reminds us of the inherent dangers of our profession. The HPFFA, the City of Houston and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) are supporting and working with the Dillion family and all affected firefighters during this difficult time. Please keep the Dillion family, as well as the men and women of Station 69 and the city's fire department, in your thoughts and prayers."

Mayor Annise Parker also released a statement: "His commitment to saving the lives and property of others is why we honor our firefighters' service. May Senior Captain Thomas W. Dillon rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the support of the Houston Fire Department and the entire City of Houston."

Former Houston firefighter Jane Draycott cleared of shoplifting charges

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A former Houston firefighter once at the center of a sexual harassment case was cleared Friday of shoplifting charges.

Police say Jane Draycott stole a DVD player, two movies and a bag of ice from a Walmart in Spring back in 2010. A judge today ruled Draycott successfully completed terms of her plea deal and dismissed her case. Months before her arrest, a federal report stated Draycott was the victim of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment at HFD's Station 54. She and another firefighter said they found racist and sexist graffiti in their locker room area.

Port Arthur firefighter falls to his death in Crystal Beach

CRYSTAL BEACH, TX (KTRK) -- A holiday trip to Galveston County ended tragically for a Port Arthur firefighter this weekend.

Deputies said Steven McShan, 24, was at a friend's home Friday night in the 2300 block of Antigua in Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula.

According to investigators, McShan was outside on the second floor balcony. There is also a third floor balcony where some kids were playing.

Officials said McShan was trying to climb to where the children were playing, so he grabbed the railing in an attempt to pull himself up to the third level.

The railing gave way and he fell about 40 feet to his death.

McShan is from Lumberton, just north of Beaumont. He had been with the Port Arthur Fire Department for about two years.

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is treating this death as a tragic accident.
