Traffic alert on Highway 290 this weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a traffic alert this weekend on Highway 290. If you travel in the area of 290 and 610, you know there's a lot of activity and closures, all part of construction on that interchange.

New closures include the 290 eastbound exit ramp to Mangum-Dacoma. It's closed and won't reopen until Monday morning.

Also be aware of alternating lane closures on the main eastbound lanes of 290 from 34th street to Mangum and 34th Street to Dacoma.

The closures are so crew can begin construction on columns for the new connector ramp to I-10.

More rain expected this weekend across southeast Texas

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Keep the umbrella handy for the next few days.

Plenty of moisture, warm temperatures and a couple of fronts will keep our weather unsettled through the weekend. The biggest threats will be brief heavy rain, dangerous lightning and even weak funnel clouds or waterspouts. No warnings are currently in place.

Some of our Eyewitness Storm Spotters have picked up over an inch of rain Thursday. While some minor street flooding has been reported during the downpours, there have been no widespread problems.

A weak front will move in on Friday, providing the focus for more heavy thundershowers. Another 1-2 inches could fall in some neighborhoods.

The mid-levels of the atmosphere dries out a little on Saturday, which should allow a few peeks of sun to shine through the clouds. But a few more showers could still develop on Saturday and more rain is likely on Sunday.

You can see where it's raining now on our street-level interactive weather map, which includes radar, satellite, lightning strikes, and much more.

Thanks to more clouds and showers, highs for most of us will stay in the 80s into next week.

No refusal weekend in effect for Labor Day

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Authorities across the state are beefing up patrols on the hunt for drunk drivers this Labor Day weekend.

Local law enforcement announced the plans Friday on the campus of Texas Southern University. They say officers across the state will be working overtime.

Another no refusal weekend begins tonight, which means blood will be drawn from suspected drunk drivers who refuse a breath test.

The Department of Transportation says 34 percent of all alcohol related fatal crashes happen during the summer.

Gas prices at all-time Labor Day weekend high

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The price at the pump is more than just a pain for some. It's a problem that's putting a damper on their Labor Day plans.

AAA Texas expects some 2.4 million Texans will be hitting the road. That's more than 4 percent more than last year.

Drivers on the roads can expect to pay more at the pump, due in part to Hurricane Isaac disrupting offshore oil production.

In Houston, the average price of regular unleaded is $3.64 a gallon. That's up 30 cents from a month ago.

John Sizemore may be fueling up, but that doesn't mean he's going anywhere this holiday weekend.

"Can't afford it. Got to stay home," Sizemore said. "It's gone up quite a bit, and I'm an Exxon retiree, and it still hurts."

The national average rose to $3.83 a gallon just before the Labor Day long weekend, nudged up even higher by the disruptions of Hurricane Isaac.

"I just do. They have to pay me whatever, I have to live with it," Barry Johnson said.

A bit of consolation: Houston is below the national average. But you have to fill up once or twice a week, it certainly adds up.

"I do a lot of driving. I'm a teacher," Crystal Mills said. "I have a work program, and I have to visit my students and I notice it hits my pocket very hard when I'm doing a lot of driving during the week."

The prices, though, may have hit a peak. Experts expect the gas to get cheaper after the Labor Day holiday -- if Mother Nature cooperates.

"I'm definitely hoping no more hurricanes," Mills said.

When it comes to filling up, every penny downward in price is a welcome sight.

HMNS paleontology hall wows on opening weekend

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's a feast for the eyes and playground for amateur paleontologists. The Hall of Paleontology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science opened this weekend to wide-eyed reviews of the dynamic dinosaur exhibits.

"I'm blown away. I didn't know that there would be this many, and it's an excellent collection," said Wade Harris, who made the drive down from College Station with his son to see the fossils.

The exhibit is larger than a football field, two stories high and you could fit five to six Goodyear blimps inside. But it's not only size which makes it special, according to the museum's president, Joel Bartsch.

"This is giant dinosaurs posed as if they are fighting each other, dramatically lit," Bartsch described.

And you don't have to be a kid to enjoy this exhibit. Just ask Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

"This is so cool. It will bring out the kid in everybody that comes in here," Parker said. "This is going to be another tourist destination in our pantheon of great places to go when you visit Houston."

Bartsch agrees, saying that people are fans as soon as they enter.

"Kids of all ages -- whether they're nine or 90 -- when they walk in here, they just go 'wow!'" he said. "And then we got 'em."

THRILLS
Thirteen of the 16 rides will open Memorial Day Weekend during the sneak peek, including:

Pirate's Plunge Log Flume promises to thrill and chill you on warm days when your flume splashes 22 feet and 40 feet into cool, fresh water.

Carousel gives a beautiful, cheery greeting to guests as they enter the Pier's Midway. In fact, this classic double-decker temptation to ride has horses, chariots or sea creatures galloping right in the Midway, so why not start here?

Revolution Up, down AND around. How fast? Try less than seven seconds a revolution! And did we mention it revolves you out OVER THE WATER?

Rock N' Roll has a retro glitter style that would make Elvis blush. Climb in your car and ride backwards, forwards and around to the music. Cool.

Cyclone coaster loops 60 feet into the air to rotate passengers forward and backward, while the horizon does flip-flops.

Sea Dragon is a swinger with an ocean view. First it swings its 10 rows of riders up, up, up 50 feet over the Pier, then takes them down and back up, over the water.

Gulf Glider is a colorful classic swing carousel, with single and double seats that swing while you rotate and tilt.

Pier Pileup Bumper Cars let you channel those Interstate 45 aggressions into a million laughs in antique and classic bash-'em vehicles. This is actually two rides: One for kids, with smaller cars, another for adults. Similar to most of the rides at family-focused Pleasure Pier, parents and their children can ride together in the big cars.

Texas Tea Cups is another Midway classic, fun for adults and kids, especially together. The cups twirl. The riders giggle.

Big Wheelin' knows little kids like big trucks. Smaller kids can ride with an adult, bigger kids on their own in this safely circling convoy.

Frog Hopper gets its name from, well, hopping. It takes a load of kids up, and then - wait for it - drops them, not too far, but when they don't expect it. And then, whoa, drops them again. They like it. They laugh.

Sky Shooter at rest looks like a huge blue and orange spider napping. Then it wakes and goes wild, spinning its 10 captive vehicles while taking them up and down, round and round, even out over the ocean. Wanna fly higher? Push a button and you do. Whew!

PREMIUM PARKING Peak Season $10 / 3 hours ($2 every hour for a maximum of $16 for the day) Parking lot opens at 8am until 2am (next morning); cars will be towed at 3am if lot not vacatedLost tickets $16Do NOT leave ticket in vehicle.Only occupy ONE space. Stanford auction to be held this weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hundreds of items that once belonged to disgraced money manager R. Allen Stanford are going on the auction block this weekend. Stanford was convicted two months ago for running a massive Ponzi scheme that lost around $7 billion of investors' money.

The warehouse is in northeast Houston, and it looks like a scene from an Indiana Jones movie. The warehouse just keep on going with row after row of merchandise. Most of it is office furniture but some of it is personal furniture belonging to a former Stanford executive.

Until three years ago, this furniture would have been found in the offices of Stanford financial near the Galleria. Now it sits in a warehouse, organized, numbered and awaiting buyers.

"If these could talk, what do you think they'd say?" we asked Auctioneer Seth Worstell.

"I don't know, couldn't tell you," he said.

When R. Allen Stanford's empire crashed, taking investor and clients money in what was called a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, whatever assets could be found became the property of the court and its receiver. That includes the personal contents of Stanford CFO Jim Davis. Everything was seized, from a $310,000 grandfather clock to a baby grand piano, a now-ironic inspirational poster and a pair of inflated exercise balls.

"With the nature of this sale, everything is going to sell absolutely - no minimums, no reserves, so there's absolutely an opportunity here for people to get a great deal," Worstell said.

It's the end of an era at Worstell Auctions. Founder Harry Worstell is retiring Saturday, and his son will take over the business. Worstell oversaw the last Stanford auction. Before that, he auctioned off Enron assets. This, he says, is better stuff

"There are many exciting things in this, there many things I've never sold," Harry Worstell said.

They say there's no minimum bid for the stuff up on the auction and they say everything must go.

The warehouse opens for viewing at 8am Saturday and the auction begins at 10am.

Teens charged in man's murder over weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Harris County sheriff's deputies have arrested two people and are searching for two more they say killed a man in front of his wife and daughter over the weekend.

Two of those in custody are just 15 years old.

Residents at the complex told us they have been on edge since the murder a few days ago. They are relieved that the suspects are now behind bars, but they say they won't stop looking over their shoulder until all four have been captured.

"His van was right here and I think her car was right here," said neighbor R.C. Haynes. "His body was just between the vehicles."

It's still fresh in the minds of neighbors at the Miramar apartments. Those who knew Victor Quevedo say he was very quiet. The 40-year-old father was robbed, stabbed and then shot to death right in front of his teen daughter and his wife.

We spoke to his scared and distraught wife the night of the murder. She told how she begged for his life.

With four suspects on the run, Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies got a break in the case Monday when they arrested two 15-year-old male juveniles, who authorities say confessed to their part in the murder. Investigators say two others, including Christian Alexander Lopez,17, and another unidentified suspect, are still on the loose.

"Two is great, but hopefully they confess to the other two," said Haynes.

The victim's family tells Eyewitness News his wife and daughter have moved out of this apartment complex.

"She moved yesterday evening," Haynes said.

But for many residents, that family who witnessed the horrifying murder will always stay in their thoughts.

"That man was probably trying to protect his family, so my heart goes out to them," Haynes told us.

Investigators say they are actively searching for Lopez and the other suspect. All four suspects are facing capital murder charges.

HPD says all four suspects may be connected to an aggravated robbery that happened nearby within hours of Quevedo's murder.
