Woman crashes car into building, flees

A search is underway for a woman who police say took her friends car without permission and then crashed it into a building in east Houston. A search is underway for a woman who police say took her friend's car without permission and then crashed it into a building in east Houston.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police are searching for the woman who crashed a car into a building in east Houston Thursday afternoon, then fled the scene.

The wreck happened around 4:45pm off Sonora near Calles.

Police say a woman took her friend's car without permission and ended up crashing into a building housing a man's collectibles.

The woman and a passenger inside the car ran from the scene, and police are now searching for them.

Meanwhile, the Houston Fire Department has blocked off entry to the building until engineers can assess the damage.

Firefighters collapse old Pasadena building to extinguish blaze

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Firefighters had to collapse an old building in Pasadena to bring a three-alarm blaze that erupted Friday afternoon under control.

By nighttime, debris was all that remained of the former church. No injuries were reported, but for seven hours, officials kept a major street closed and put many lives on hold.

It began as a small trail of smoke, but erupted into a three-alarm fire, all in a matter of minutes. It took what had once been the Sharron Lutheran Church building with it. In the 60's, it was a mega-church of its day in the then small city of Pasadena.

The city's fire chief, Laney Armstrong, remembers it well -- at its best and in recent years, at its worst.

"It's been vacant for quite a while; we've had some issues with vagrancy, and the building wasn't secured. It's been for sale for quite a while," Armstrong said.

The building was beyond saving. Next door, though, was a daycare with 30 children inside. The children were evacuated safely to a nearby YMCA.

"They were excited, they thought we were going on a field trip actually. They're like, 'Oh a fire!' and then when we took off, we're gong on a field trip," day care employee Victoria Garza said.

The Pasadena Fire Department is volunteer. Those volunteers had worked early Friday morning on another large fire. So when this fire erupted, the Houston Fire Department pitched in. With combined forces, the fire was brought under control.

Meanwhile, people stood across the street and watched what they'd seen for years crumble before them.

"I seen it but nobody ever paid attention to it. And then a 10, 20 minutes later, the whole thing, trees were catching on fire," neighbor Jordan Martinez said.

The fire wasn't completely out by early evening when a bulldozer pulled the gutted building to the ground. The building had been for sale, now on the land has value.

Officials had blocked off the Red Bluff, the street on which the church sat, until they had the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but a day care worker tells us she that she had heard two people were seen running from the building just moments before the blaze.

Bees invade building under construction near Galleria

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Crane operators face a dangerous job, being high above the ground. But some are facing a new threat - killer bees! They swarmed a crane working on a building in the Galleria area.

Along with the banging of hammers and the whirling of drills, there was a constant buzz at the Galleria-area construction site from a menace that was living way up high.

"I've noticed there's been a lot of bees around the top up there," said Alex Cochran, superintendent of the site.

"A lot" turned out to be 5,000 honey bees that decided this new building made a perfect home. They settled in 20 stories up, making their hive in a crane whose operator was getting sick of being stung.

"He got one on his wrist and one on his shoulder," Cochran said.

It was time to call in an expert when the hive doubled in size.

"The bee hive was about a size of a softball yesterday and today it's about the size of a basketball," Cochran said.

That many bees would frighten most people.

"Every time you do a bee job, you're gonna get stung," Gotcha Pest Control owner Claude Griffin said.

But for Griffin, this is the most fun he can have on the job.

"I just gotta do a vacuum situation and suck her out," he said.

He and his coworker suited up, climbing the crane to get to the bees, and within about a half an hour, they vacuumed the insects into a cage and made the trip back down, buzzing with pride.

"These people needed to get rid of these bees, these bees were really gonna cause some problems," Griffin said.

Now the workers here can focus on their job without being bugged.

Those pest removal experts tell us this area is very popular for bees for a good reason. They remove a lot of hives here because people maintain the flowers so well that it is bee paradise.

HPD: Driver runs over woman, strikes building

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A driver and a bicyclist were both recovering in an area hospital Saturday night after a hit-and-run accident in northwest Houston.

Police said the driver's blue Ford Mustang hit a woman and then a building around 1:20pm.

According to investigators, the woman was riding her bicycle on the North Loop at North Main. She was crossing an intersection when the Mustang struck her, officials said.

Rick Halliburton witnessed what happened. He said several people were waiting at the red light. He watched the woman make her way across the intersection and then saw the Mustang weave through traffic and hit her.

"He did not even stop he sped up," Halliburton said. "He tried to pass the truck on the right and then when he tried to pass, he caught the rear end of her bike and flipped her."

Witnesses told police the driver then sped away.

Several people tried to follow the car, but could not keep up.

He eventually lost control and crashed into a metal building in the 8900 block of North Main at Crosstimbers, damaging machinery and equipment inside.

Witnesses told us the driver was speeding, and he came close to hitting several other cars just before he struck the cyclist.

"I saw the Mustang. He came across the tracks, he passed me, he come up here, he was running about 60 or 70 [mph]," Tommy Deveaux said. "I thought he was going to lose it right up here in front of the school, but after that I didnt see him anymore."

The bicyclist was alert when emergency responders took her to Ben Taub General Hospital, officials said. At last check, she was stable.

The driver was also transported to Ben Taub in unknown condition. He now faces charges.

No one else was injured. No names have been released.

The accident remains under investigation. Police said they do not believe alcohol played a role.

School bus crashes into building

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was a scary ride for dozens of students on a bus that crashed along the Hardy toll road Thursday morning. The bus ended up slamming into a building on Crosstimbers before it came to a stop.

The students on the bus were from KIPP 3D Academy and KIPP Dream College Prep. While we still don't know why the driver lost control and hit a building, we do know the children on board responded in a way to which any parent would be proud.

It was a chaotic, frightening scene just off the Hardy toll road -- three dozen students, ranging from kindergarteners to eighth grader, involved in a school bus wreck. Their driver was seemingly unconscious, but through the confusion two of those eighth graders took control.

Francisco De la Cruz and Daniel Ortega first helped the younger children out the back of the bus and then they tended to the injured driver.

"We started giving them their backpacks because they started crying," Francisco said. "So he went to help the bus driver and I was telling the kids to move out of the way so we could get the bus driver out. And we just started helping everybody else."

"She was unconscious. She was bleeding. She was bleeding from her face," Daniel recalled. "I was freaked out. I was so scared."

The boys put those fears aside and kept the other children calm.

"It just came to my mind to help the little kids out and then help myself out later," Francisco said.

Of the children on board, only one was transported to the hospital and has since been released.

Investigators don't yet know what exactly happened. But the private company that owns the bus is among the largest in the country and employs 62,000 bus drivers. They've promised an internal investigation and told me on the phone from their headquarters in Cincinnati that the driver, who has been with them for two years, is a good one.

"She's been a great driver for us," said First Student spokesperson Maureen Richmond. "She came highly recommended and with great skills. Right now it's part of the investigation to figure out what did occur."

At KIPP, they say they teach their kids to be leaders. It's a lesson apparently well learned by the children on the bus, especially the two eighth graders who managed a frightening trip to school.

"Are you a hero?" I asked Daniel.

"The little kids consider me a hero," he responded. "But, yeah, I guess."

The bus company says all employees undergo criminal background and driving history checks before they're hired. They also have 50 hours of classroom and practical training. There are also random drug tests along with semi-annual physical exams. The driver in this case, whose name the company would not release, was a driver for HISD from 1989 to 2002.

The same bus company was involved in a wreck while transporting KIPP students back in April 2010. Ten students suffered minor injuries in that accident.

SUV crash catches building on fire

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A driver was arrested for drunken driving after she crashed her car into a building and it caught fire, officials said.

It happened on the Katy Freeway at Brittmoore around 3am Saturday.

Investigators said a Jeep sports utility vehicle crashed into a shopping center. The shopping center caught fire.

According to police, a woman was driving east on the Katy Freeway service road when she lost control of the SUV and went up the curb, knocking down an I-10 sign and then plowing into the front of a shopping center.

There were metal concrete posts protecting the front of the shopping center, which prevented her from going all the way through. The crash busted the front windows of an empty section of the shopping center and caught the building on fire, police said.

The Jeep was lodged on the concrete posts. Witnesses were able to pull the woman from the SUV before it burst into flames.

The woman was not injured. She was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
