Storage facility fire destroys boats, RVs

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- The investigation continues into a huge fire at a storage facility in northeast Harris County. Dozens of boats and recreational vehicles were destroyed but no one was hurt.

The fire started last night at the Miller Road 2 Boat and RV storage facility, just off of Highway 90 in northeast Harris County. Property worth thousands of dollars was lost in the fire.

The owners of boats stored in this facility started arriving early this morning. All of them were in disbelief their boats were gone.

"I'm devastated," said boat owner Dwayne Mitchell. "I'm heartbroken. I mean, what do you do?"

Dwayne and Traci Mitchell just bought a brand new pontoon boat a year ago and today nothing remains except a charred trailer.

"The only way I can know it's mine is by the lock that's on it," said Traci. "Everything else is gone."

"I've owned a lot of boats but this is my first new boat. I don't know," said Dwayne.

Sheldon, Channelview, Atascocita, and Huffman fire departments all responded to the fire. The fire did not spread to any other buildings.

"We understand from the owner, in every stall -- there are about 30 stalls -- and every stall does have either a boat or an RV in it, so yes, it's a high dollar loss," Dean Hensley with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.

Boat owner Carl Collins says his family had a lot of good times on their boat and plans to buy a new one.

"We have such a good time so there's no way I could do without having a boat," said Collins. "We have a good time on it."

The owner of the storage tells Eyewitness News even a classic car was stored here. He says his business is insured but says some people who had their boats stored here did not have insurance.

According to the fire marshal's office the cause of the fire is under investigation but at this point they do believe it could be electrical. The owner of the storage facility says he believes a boat battery charger could be to blame.

2-alarm fire destroys apartments in NW Harris County

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- More than a dozen families are homeless after a two-alarm fire overnight in northwest Harris County.

The fire started around 9pm Friday at the Timbers Apartments on Gulf Bank near Antoine.

The swift blaze spread to two buildings at the complex. Adults and children ran for their lives to escape the flames.

No one was hurt, but the fire damaged about 16 units.

The Houston Red Cross is helping assist families who lost their homes.

It's not yet clear how the fire started.

Houston police said two officers near the fire were forced to use a Taser on two men who attacked them.

The officers were blocking off streets near the fire when they saw four men fighting.

They said they went to break it up, and that's when two of the men attacked the officers who used their Tasers to subdue the suspects.

The officers were not hurt and the entire group was arrested.

Fire destroys youth sports league field house

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- The season may be over, but the heartache is just beginning for a youth sports league after fire destroys their property in Pasadena.

The only fortunate element of this story is the timing. Although sectional playoffs are now underway, the spring season for the league is long over, and that leaves the Pasadena group with a lot of donations to raise before the fall season begins.

The pictures posted on the Pasadena Pee-Wee League's website show players and family, the heart of any team. The field house and concession stand aren't shown, and on Thursday, it was too late to capture it as it once was.

"Our garage where we stored our pitching machines, our lawn mowers, ladders, it's all gone," Pasadena Pee-Wee League President Ray Valenzuela said.

At 3am, the Pasadena Fire Department was called to Strawberry Park. The two-story building was reduced to only one as the roof collapsed. The building was destroyed, along with everything inside.

"We do have a roof collapsed. We had to bring out some machinery so that we can get the roof off of some of the other structures so that we can actually make entry to do an investigation and to run our dogs," Pasadena Fire Marshal David Brannon said.

The dog is trained to detect accelerant. Investigators are collecting evidence to determine whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set.

But for Valenzuela, the cause is secondary to the result.

"I was out there this morning and I did tear up watching, and I've been telling my son all day long I feel like I lost something," he said.

Somewhere in all the debris are trophies spanning 40 years of kids playing baseball on the field that can't be replaced. It's what Valenzuela's son remembers from his first games.

"Every time I go up there, I see baseball stuff like equipment and everything and it reminds me of playing here," former player Ray Valenzuela Jr. said.

But it's more than memories. All the concession equipment that helped feed the fans is gone, along with computers and backup equipment for players who can't afford their own.

The team will have to replace all that, and all-star player "Panchito" Guerrero plans to help.

"Try to get money and support this stuff and try to get back all this stuff," Guerrero said.

The building itself is owned by the city of Pasadena. The fire chief says it will eventually be replaced, but the league has to provide everything inside.
