Run through history at Galveston Revival Race
GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- Residents in Galveston will walk and run today during the fourth annual Galveston Historical Foundation Revival Race. Events range from a kids' 1-K run to a 10-K race.
The races begin at 5:30pm on Galveston's East End, and finish at Saengerfest Park at the corner of 23rd and Strand.
Clay Wade, Galveston Historical Foundation's director of events, says the race is USA Track and Field-certified. The route will highlight the island's tree sculptures, carved from 100-year-old trees destroyed by Hurricane Ike, along with Galveston monuments and architecture.
"Beginning and ending at the Mardi Gras arch, this year's race will feature new race management and a fun-filled party following the race at Saengerfest Park with entertainment, food and drink for the entire family," Wade said in a release.
Prices for the races range from $25 to $45 with proceeds benefiting the Galveston Historical Foundation. Each registrant also receives a free ticket to the 39th annual Dickens on the Strand festival.

Fiestas Patrias Parade to wind through downtown
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Thousands of Houstonians will line the streets of downtown today for the 44th annual Fiestas Patrias Parade. Fiestas Patrias marks the anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain.
The parade begins at 10am -- rain or shine -- on Texas at Hamilton, proceeds west on Texas, north on San Jacinto, east on Preston and ends around noon on Preston at Crawford, just outside Minute Maid Park.
Eyewitness News reporter Erik Barajas and his children are riding in the parade.
The parade route will feature folk dancing and festive Mexican music, culminating in the crowning of Miss Fiestas Patrias.

Driver crashes through fence at Women's Hospital of Texas
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An air ambulance was almost hit while parked on the helipad at The Women's Hospital of Texas off OST and Fannin this morning.
Investigators say a man driving a new Dodge Challenger crashed through a fence on the hospital grounds around 2:30am.
The car was going so fast it didn't stop until it ran into a guard rail along the helipad. The car stopped only 50 feet from the air ambulance parked there.
The man and the woman riding with him were taken to a hospital to be treated. A police spokesperson says the driver is in serious condition, but the passenger suffered only minor scrapes and bruises. Police say they found a container of alcohol in that car.
They also estimate the damage to the hospital grounds to be in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

Teen lured into prostitution through Facebook
The young victim no longer lives in Houston, but investigators believe she wasn't the only one targeted and the story should serve as a warning to all parents.
The girl is from Houston, but a relative in the Austin area is telling the story.
"You could just tell she'd been through a lot, hell on earth," said the victim's aunt, Crystal Whalon.
She says her niece met someone on Facebook and was lured into a situation she never expected. She thought she was being invited to some kind of show.
"Basically they brought her to an undisclosed location and was basically pimped out like a prostitute," Whalon said.
Her family frantically searched for her. After two days, the GPS from her cell phone led them to her and they believe it saved her life.
"I had no clue that this was going on in central Texas. I thought it was a Third World country situation," said Whalon.
Police across Texas say there are many ways predators get to kids from the phone to the internet.
"It is a growing issue down here," said Det. Joel Pridgeon with the Austin Police Department.
From text messages and pictures to contact by social media, children are being lured in.
"The big stereotype is that there is one type of child that engages in this behavior and that couldn't be farther from the truth. All children are at risk," Det. Pridgeon said.
Whalon's niece is safe now, but says she is sharing this sensitive story to warn other families.
"Stay engaged. Stay close to your youth. Don't think that can't happen to your child," said Whalon.
Police are still looking into the case, but so far no one has been arrested.

Shots fired during police chase through three counties
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A high-speed chase through three counties came to a violent end Monday afternoon in Polk County.
At around 2:30pm Monday, Montgomery County deputy constables say Humble police spotted a driver speeding in the New Caney area. A MCSO deputy constable tried to make a traffic stop, but the suspect fled and authorities gave chase. Deputies say speeds reached 140 miles per hour during the chase.
Law enforcement realized it was a stolen vehicle out of Sugar Land.
DPS says they laid down a spike strip which slowed the suspect's vehicle down, but he kept going and rammed some deputies off the road. The suspect was attempting to ram a Liberty Co. sheriff's vehicle when the captain fired his weapon at the suspect's vehicle, which then stopped.
From SkyEye 13 HD, a large bullet hole could be seen in the driver's side window of the stolen vehicle. The suspect was not hit, but was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
The suspect was taken into custody near Highway 59 at 190, near the Livingston area.
He is facing charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle as well as felony evading arrest.

Art Car Parade rolls through Houston
The annual Art Car Parade brings crazy, colorful creations to the streets of Houston
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The world's largest art car parade made its way through Houston on Saturday. More than 300,000 people watched the 25th annual event, which featured more than 250 motorized rolling works of art.
The parade began at Allen Parkway at Taft at 1pm and ended on Montrose.
Art Car Weekend is the Orange Show's's biggest outreach program, a vehicle for the message that art is an integral part of everyone's everyday life.

Home invasion suspect ID'ed through DNA on soda bottle
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives say they are searching for a suspected robber they've identified through DNA on a soda bottle he left at the scene of a home invasion in northwest Harris County.
Victor Luevano is wanted on a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in connection to an October 16 home invasion in the 13000 block of Ann Louise Road, according to his charging document.
Detectives say a family was sitting at the home with a visitor when four to five masked men barged in with rifles, shotguns and pistols. The men ordered everyone inside a bedroom as they robbed the house of electronics and computer equipment.
Officials say one of the suspects then ordered the family friend to fetch him a bottle of soda water from the refrigerator. The victim watched the man drink from the bottle before fleeing with the other suspects.
Investigators collected DNA found on the bottle and entered it into the Texas Department of Public Safety Combined DNA Index System Laboratory. The system matched it to Luevano, and he was charged in the crime.
Bail for Luevano has been set at $50,000.

Police: Two injured after driver runs through stop sign
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say a driver who ran a stop sign overnight is being blamed for a crash.
Authorities say a car on Creekmont ran a stop sign and hit a car that was travelling north on Rosslyn, sending that car into a ditch. The drivers of both cars were taken to the hospital and are listed as stable.
The driver who is being blamed for the accident will be tested for alcohol.

Crosby teenager, his mom accused of enticing Pearland child through Facebook
We hear about kids who meet strangers online and the bad things that can happen. Well one 13-year-ld Pearland girl knows first hand how scary things can get when your online friends meet you face to face.
"I was really scared," the girl said.
It's been a rough week for this 13-year-old Pearland girl, and it all started with a Facebook friendship with a 16-year-old boy.
"He was playing around with me, saying he was going to kidnap me, but I didn't think he was really going to do it," the girl said.
But within a few weeks, the flirtation turned into a face-to-face meeting when the 16-year-old boy arrived at the girl's school with his mother in tow.
"So I decided to go with him, and when I was there, they were treating me good and everything but I did not know what was happening," she said.
Pearland police say on Tuesday, 37-year-old Dorothy Montenegro and her son took the girl from Pearland to their home in Crosby 40 miles away. After a few hours, the girl says things went bad when her cell phone started receiving text messages from her worried parents.
"He like broke my phone kind of and stole it from me," the girl said.
Back in Pearland, the girl's parents filed a missing persons report then hit the Internet and tracked down Montenegro's address. They say that's when the cops headed to Crosby.
"We were in the back seat and his mom was in the front seat driving and the cops came up to the car and told us to get out of the car and they took me away from them," the girl said.
While she is home now, the 13-year-old says no one should follow her example.
"I would tell them not to meet guys on Facebook and to be careful who they meet," the girl said.
Good advice, according to Katherine Cabaniss with Houston's Crime Stoppers, who adds parents need to pay close attention to a child's online friendships.
"You would never think about sending your 13-year-old to the mall and saying invite anyone into our house and welcome them into our living room. You would never think about that, but when you allow a child to talk to someone on the Internet unsupervised, it is just like inviting a stranger into your living room," Cabaniss said.
The 16-year-old boy and his mom were both charged with misdemeanor counts of enticing a child.

Driver arrested after police chase through north Houston
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man was arrested Saturday after leading deputies on a chase through the north side of Houston. It started around 1:30am on Little York near Montgomery.
Investigators say the driver stopped a few miles away after his tires blew out. He tried to run away, but deputies caught up with him on Radcliffe at Morrow and he was arrested.
It is unknown why the driver fled from police.

Smoke from wildfire blowing through Houston
TEXAS CITY, TX (KTRK) -- Smoke from a wildfire in coastal Jefferson County is moving across Houston right now. Air quality sensors are indicating "moderate" air quality in Houston now because of the smoke. We expect the plume to drift north and eventually disperse over the next few hours. Based on satellite data, the smoke seems to be coming from the McFaddin Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County.

Car crashes through roof of Santa Fe business
Police said this car left the roadway and traveled up the railroad track embankment, then jumped the railroad tracks, flying about 100 feet through the air and crashing through the roof of a business across the street (Santa Fe Police Department) SANTA FE, TX (KTRK) -- Police in Santa Fe are investigating a crash that must have looked like something out of an action movie. Officials said a commercial burglary alarm went off at Gulf Coast Aerobic Services in the 13200 block of Texas 6 early Saturday. When officers arrived around 2am, they found a crashed vehicle inside of the business.
Investigators said 20-year-old Royce Morales of Santa Fe was driving north on Avenue R at around 90mph in a 30mph zone when the accident happened.
Morales failed to negotiate a turn, officials said. The vehicle left the roadway and traveled up the railroad track embankment, which caused it to go airborne.
Police said the crash was so dynamic that the vehicle jumped the railroad tracks, flying about 100 feet through the air and crashing through the roof.
The car landed upside-down on its nose in the Gulf Coast Aerobic Services building on the opposite side of the railroad tracks.
Officials said early estimates put the damage at more than $25,000.
According to police, the driver of the car was gone by the time they arrived. Detectives said they gathered evidence from the vehicle that led them to Morales, who attempted to report the car stolen.
Police said Morales confessed to being behind the wheel during the crash. Officials are pursuing charges for reckless driving and filing a false report.

Man shot through door of mobile home
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston man remains in the hospital after police say he was shot through the door of his northeast side home. Police say around 4:30am Monday, someone opened fire on the man's mobile home at Alderson and Lathrop. The suspect was reportedly spotted driving back by the crime scene while police were there, but an arrest has not been made. At last check, the victim was in serious but stable condition.
