HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A baby has been killed in a violent dog attack inside his grandparents' home.

Just before 8pm Saturday, deputies were called to a home in the 27000 block of Medina Circle in far west Montgomery County. When deputies arrived and entered the home, they found a one-year-old boy had been brutally mauled to death by the family's pit bull.

As the deputy tried to control the dog, the dog turned on the deputy and lunged at him. The deputy shot the dog inside the home.

The baby was inside the home with his grandmother when he was attacked. The 45-year-old grandmother was not injured by the dog, but authorities say she had to be taken by ambulance to a local hospital due to emotional trauma.

The call for help was made by the victim's grandfather when he arrived home. The victim and his mother had just recently moved in with the grandparents, according to the sheriff's office. The child's mother had left the home earlier in the day and has not been located by detectives.

Investigators are conducting interviews with the family and neighbors. No criminal charges have been filed but when the investigation has been completed, the case will be reviewed with the District Attorney's Office.
