Man struck by lightning while working on school roof in NW Harris County

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man was hospitalized Sunday morning after being struck by lightning while working on a roof in northwest Harris County.

It happened at Primrose School of Barker-Cypress in the 16500 block of Dundee Road.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the construction crew was trying to come down from the roof when the weather quickly worsened. The 30-year-old victim was on his way down when a bolt of lightning struck him and knocked him unconscious.

The foreman performed CPR until deputies arrived and took over. An ambulance then arrived and took over for the deputies, taking him to North Cypress Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Deputies said he was breathing on his own and was later transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for continued treatment.

Officials tell us it is difficult to tell how a lightning strike has affected a person's body until around 24 hours after the incident.

We will continue following this story and will update you on Eyewitness News and abc13.com when new information is available.

A few minutes after the incident on the roof, another bolt of lightning struck a home on Ellendale Court, also in northwest Harris County.

The lightning stripped the bark from a pine tree.

Homeowners say an electrical surge went through the house, knocking out the power. Sparks started flying out of the oven and the house filled up with smoke, they said, but no one was hurt.

Deputy: Boy burned while playing with flammable liquid

An 11-year-old boy was burned while he reportedly was playing with flammable liquid in north Harris County. An 11-year-old boy was burned while he reportedly was playing with flammable liquid in north Harris County.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Deputies say an 11-year-old boy was seriously burned in north Harris County while he and his friends were playing with a flammable liquid.

The incident happened near Aldine ISD's Grantham Academy in the 1500 block of Sandydale Lane.

Deputies believe the boy was initially taken to Memorial Hermann, where he was stabilized, but was transported by ground to Galveston Shriners Burn Hospital. They say the boy suffered second-degree burns on 50 percent of his body.

Detectives say this began when four children were playing, lighting newspapers on fire during a football game that isn't affiliated with the school.

Deputies say one of the boys began pouring rubbing alochol when somehow, the flames got on another boy. The boy then started running down the street on fire. That's when neighbors came out and tried rolling the boy on the ground.

"It's heartbreaking. You don't wish that on anyone, you don't," one neighbor told us. "He may have been in shock because he didn't have a reaction. He just had a dead stare. He just wasn't reacting to anything."

Parents and children at the scene are very upset.

Investigators are still talking to the boy's friends to determine exactly what happened.

No other details were immediately available.

HPD: Parents in club while kids asleep in vehicle

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A mother and father are facing child endangerment charges and a local rapper is under arrest after a wild night at a Washington area nightclub.

It all happened around 2am at the Nox Bar on Nett near Parker in the Heights area.

Police say a group was fighting in the parking lot, but they were eventually allowed into the club.

Police went outside to investigate and discovered a weapon and ski mask in the back of one car. They went inside to tell the bar owner and to pull that group out of the club. In the process, they discovered yet another weapon.

While investigating, police also found two small children sleeping in the back of another car, seeming left alone as their parents were in the club.

"We located a 3-year-old and 5-year-old and they were sleeping the entire time," said Sgt. MT Ferguson with the Houston Police Department. "Both parents are in custody."

"Anything could have happened. Something could have happened to those kids," said club-goer Allen Bethea. "They could have gotten out the car on their own."

The parents in custody are facing charges of child endangerment. The officers brought food for the children, who woke up and were hungry, while they called welfare authorities.

The local rapper will be charged with possession of a weapon.

Girl fatally hit by truck while waiting for bus

TEXAS CITY, TX (KTRK) -- The school week began in tragedy in Texas City as a girl, waiting at her school bus stop, was killed.

The girl was doing what nearly all children do Monday morning. She was waiting at 26th Street and 29th Ave, where there is no sidewalk. So she was sitting in the grass by the street when the truck made a wide turn and hit her.

Grief counselors were here at Christina Lopez's school Monday and will be all week, if needed. Her parents grief-stricken but also angry at both the driver and police.

Texas City police officers sat outside the Lopez home on Monday partly to offer help but mostly to discourage any potential problems.

"I don't know if I'll be able to control my emotions," said Christina's father, Manuel Lopez.

The driver who hit and killed 11-year-old Christina Lopez is her next door neighbor.

"Not only did he take my 11-year-daughter from me, he took her last moments away from me. I could have been holding her hand, telling her I love her," the girl's mother, Nina Lopez, said.

The sixth grader's parents say although the neighbor knew whom he had hit with his tractor truck, it took a long time for anyone to knock on their door.

"She didn't have to go through that by herself," Nina said.

Her daughter was sitting on the edge of the road waiting for her bus when police say the neighbor made a wide turn in the big rig and struck the girl. The driver voluntarily submitted blood for a toxicology test, and charges or traffic tickets could come later. Police don't argue he was at fault.

"We don't feel we have all the information yet," Texas City Police Department Capt. Brian Goetschius said.

Her parents don't think that's good enough

"How is he free?" Nina said.

They don't want to wait for a decision. Christina was on the Spirit Squad at Levy Fry Intermediate, well-liked and a good student.

Even the district spokeswoman had trouble focusing Monday.

"We lost a little girl today and it's tragic," said Melissa Tortorici with Texas City ISD.

The district will review the safety of the bus stop, as Christina's parents struggle to understand.

"She was 11. How do you not see someone sitting in the grass?" Nina said.

Texas City police say it will complete its investigation and then hand over the case to the district attorney for possible charges. At the very least, police believe the driver was not paying attention or misjudged the turn.

Christina's parents say they plan to meet with investigators Tuesday morning to address their concerns.

Clear Lake mom accused of leaving baby alone in vehicle while going into bar

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A local woman has been charged with child endangerment after officials say she left her three-month-old child in a car so she could go drinking.

It was 3:30am Sunday, when Amy Cooney, 31, was allegedly inside a bar on Houston's south side and her three-month-old baby boy was in her black SUV parked outside.

Neighbor Pat Coleman said, "I can't believe Amy left her baby in the car, because grandma... She's got a good mother, and grandmother was good, so it must be an accident."

Coleman lives across the street from Cooney and her family and can't believe the young woman she watched grow up, who features her children on her Facebook page, is charged with child endangerment.

We tried to talk to Cooney's mom about what happened, but she didn't want to comment.

According to court records, Cooney was in line in the bathroom at the bar when she told another patron that her baby was in the car. That's when that customer asked to see the baby, leading Cooney to the car, where the patron grabbed the baby and turned him over to authorities.

Prosecutors told the court, "The defendant left her three-month-old child in the car, went inside the club. It's unknown how long the child was in the car before authorities were alerted."

For now, Cooney remains in jail, having not yet posted bond, while neighbors remain in disbelief.

"I just can't believe it, I really can't," Coleman said. "I'd go to court to say that, I can't believe it."

Cooney faces a felony charge of child endangerment.

Dad dies while saving drowning son

LA PORTE, TX (KTRK) -- A La Porte family is mourning a father who died trying to save his son from drowning.

It was supposed to be a family fishing trip along the San Luis Pass, and 44-year-old Juan Vela and his children were thrilled.

"He was happy and everything. He wanted to go fishing, 'cause we often go do that with him," his son, Rene Vela, said.

But the water that looked harmless from shore became deadly. It started when a family friend's young daughter got into trouble. Fourteen-year-old Rene Vela tried to help and soon got caught into the currents himself.

"When I was trying to save the little girl, I just took another step I just went all the way down. I couldn't get air," he said.

The teen says neither he nor anyone in the family really knew how to swim, but when his father saw that he was in trouble, he went into the water anyway.

"He's a brave man, I think it was a father instinct," uncle Jaime Cardenas, said.

"He kept pushing me to shore so I can get there, and then he just decided to give up," Rene said.

Rene made it to shore, but by the time his dad was pulled from the water, it was too late.

Through her tears, Gloria Vela describes her husband of 25 years as a hardworking man whose main focus was providing for his family and he died trying to save them.

"He risked his life for me, and I'm happy to be alive and not dead," Rene said.

The Vela family says they plan on laying Juan to rest on Wednesday.

Motorcyclist killed in wreck while being pulled over

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A motorcycle rider pulling over for a Houston police officer was killed overnight when another vehicle hit his bike.

It happened on the South Freeway near Yellowstone on Houston's south side at around 1:30am. An HPD officer spotted the motorcyclist on the feeder road. They say he was running red lights.

The officer signaled to the motorcyclist to pull over, and the rider stopped at a narrow, one-lane entrance ramp. That's when officers say another driver in a pickup truck sideswiped the HPD patrol unit and hit the motorcyclist, who died at the scene.

"A blue Chevy truck came from behind and sideswiped the officer's vehicle, then ran over the individual that was on the motorcycle," said Sgt. S. George with the Houston Police Department. "He was killed at the scene."

No officers were hurt. Police say they were going to ask the motorcyclist to pull over in a different, safer place just before the accident happened.

The pickup truck driver was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with minor injuries. According to police, that driver had a blood-alcohol level beyond the legal limit and now faces charges.
