Pedestrian killed outside bar on Washington

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man was killed when he was hit by a car in front of a bar on Washington Avenue overnight.

It happened around 1:40am Saturday on Washington near Patterson, west of downtown Houston.

Officers said Luis Alberto Vorante was leaving the bar at 4100 Washington. He stepped out into the street and was struck by a black Chevrolet Suburban traveling east on Washington, police said.

The roadway was closed in both directions for several hours Saturday morning while police investigated.

Witnesses told police the driver of the SUV was speeding and she fled the scene.

Investigators said they located the driver -- 19-year-old Rebecca Bowman -- a couple blocks away. She was taken into custody and charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and failture to stop and render aid.

Bowman was released from Harris County Jail on Saturday after posting $50,000 bail for each charge. She is due in court Monday.

HPD searching for driver who fatally struck pedestrian

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating what is being called Houston's first death of the year.

Investigators are looking for a driver who left the scene of a deadly pedestrian accident in southwest Houston.

It was less than two hours into the new year when Houston police say a 32-year-old man was walking along the side of Stancliff near Shelton and witnesses saw a black Cadillac Escalade drive up and slam into him.

"They stopped and I guess once they saw a body they ended up fleeing the scene," Sgt. D. Thomas with the Houston Police Department said.

The victim died at the scene.

"I feel pretty sad for the person that did get hit," said Eugene Kettlewell, who lives nearby. "It's even sadder that somebody didn't stop."

Neighbors say Stancliff is heavily traveled and pedestrians are often seen walking -- some on sidewalks and others on the roadway itself.

"They drive too fast up and down this street here," neighbor Shirley Andrews said.

As police search for the suspect accused of killing the victim with his SUV, neighbors say this will now be a somber scene knowing the city's first death of 2012 happened so close to home.

"I would hope they would find whoever did it so they can at least figure out why they didn't stop," Andrews said.

Police are still looking for that black Cadillac Escalade, which likely has damage to the right front end. Anyone with information on that vehicle is asked to call HPD or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

One killed in back-to-back pedestrian accidents

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Deputies are investigating two back-to-back pedestrian accidents in northeast Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, two people were struck in the 11000 block of Beaumont Highway at John Ralston around 7pm.

One of the victims died at the scene, officials said. The other was rushed to an area hospital.

Authorities said both victims are adult males.

Information was still coming in late Saturday, but officials said the first accident was involving a Latino man in his 20s. He was allegedly struck by a white Ford pickup truck. The driver claimed he didn't see the victim.

The second crash happened moments later after a nearby business owner and two wrecker drivers rushed to help the injured victim.

Investigators say a woman in another pickup tried to swerve around the group. They said she drove over the injured man's body and then crashed into one of the Good Samaritans before speeding from the scene.

The first victim died at the scene. The Good Samaritan was taken via ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the second vehicle never stopped, officials said. She continued driving west on Beaumont Hwy. until the wrecker drivers were able to apprehend her about a mile away.

Beaumont Hwy. near the accident was blocked for several hours while authorities investigated.

It is unclear if alcohol played a role in the second accident. Deputies said the driver is facing charges for failure to stop and render aid.

No names have been released.
