Teen accused of setting fire to equipment storage facility of Cy-Fair Sports Association

Jalen Laron Mays Jalen Laron Mays, 19, is charged with arson.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A teenager is accused of setting fire to the storage facility of the Cy-Fair Sports Association earlier this month.

Back on September 7, Eyewitness News told you about the blaze that damaged the equipment garage at the Queenston baseball complex and destroyed thousands of dollars worth of equipment. The garage was gutted by the fire and investigators say the fire was incendiary caused by an open flame igniting combustibles.

The charred equipment inside was once used to help maintain nine baseball fields used by more than 2,500 kids.

Now a man is charged in the case. Court documents state Jalen Laron Mays was seen by a witness coming out of the parking lot at around the time of the blaze. The witness said he saw the fire and didn't see anyone else in the area. The witness called 911 to report the fire and give a description of the individual leaving the park.

Police say Mays was stopped after the fire call near the location of the fire and that he was wearing clothes matching the description given by the witness.

According to investigators, Mays had paint oxidation marks on both shoulders that matched the exterior wall of the structure that was burned and was carrying a lighter.

Mays, 19, is charged with arson.

Officials with the sports league told Eyewitness News there was no insurance on the building. CFSA is soliciting donations of money, time or resources to help remove the damaged building, rebuild it, and replace the lost equipment for the complex.

Storage facility fire destroys boats, RVs

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- The investigation continues into a huge fire at a storage facility in northeast Harris County. Dozens of boats and recreational vehicles were destroyed but no one was hurt.

The fire started last night at the Miller Road 2 Boat and RV storage facility, just off of Highway 90 in northeast Harris County. Property worth thousands of dollars was lost in the fire.

The owners of boats stored in this facility started arriving early this morning. All of them were in disbelief their boats were gone.

"I'm devastated," said boat owner Dwayne Mitchell. "I'm heartbroken. I mean, what do you do?"

Dwayne and Traci Mitchell just bought a brand new pontoon boat a year ago and today nothing remains except a charred trailer.

"The only way I can know it's mine is by the lock that's on it," said Traci. "Everything else is gone."

"I've owned a lot of boats but this is my first new boat. I don't know," said Dwayne.

Sheldon, Channelview, Atascocita, and Huffman fire departments all responded to the fire. The fire did not spread to any other buildings.

"We understand from the owner, in every stall -- there are about 30 stalls -- and every stall does have either a boat or an RV in it, so yes, it's a high dollar loss," Dean Hensley with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.

Boat owner Carl Collins says his family had a lot of good times on their boat and plans to buy a new one.

"We have such a good time so there's no way I could do without having a boat," said Collins. "We have a good time on it."

The owner of the storage tells Eyewitness News even a classic car was stored here. He says his business is insured but says some people who had their boats stored here did not have insurance.

According to the fire marshal's office the cause of the fire is under investigation but at this point they do believe it could be electrical. The owner of the storage facility says he believes a boat battery charger could be to blame.

Newborn found in plastic container outside Pasadena medical facility

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A newborn is now in the custody of CPS officials after he was found in a plastic container outside of a Pasadena medical facility.

A worker discovered the baby outside the Bayside Urgent Care Center on Preston near Fairmont Saturday night.

Police say the baby was only hours old when he was found. Noah Smith, the worker who found him, tells us it was a shocking sight.

"He was definitely a newborn, basically the eyes hadn't been able to focus on anything yet. He was very clean, it looked like someone had taken care before dropping him off," Smith said.

So far, none of the baby's family members have come forward to claim the child.

The Texas Safe Haven Law allows a parent to give up the custody of their child up to 60 days old at any hospital, medical service provider or child welfare agency but the parent must leave the child with an on-duty employee.

Massive fire burns at facility near Old Town Spring

DEMOND FERNANDEZSPRING, TX (KTRK) -- A few fire fighters were injured, people evacuated from their homes, some structures destroyed and hundreds left without water all because of a fire eyewitnesses say may have been start by two teens.

It started burning Friday afternoon around Aldine Westfield near Bayer, not far from Old Town Spring. By Friday night, firefighters were still keeping an eye on hot spots. Neighbors say they're upset it's all because a couple of teenagers may have taken a prank with matches way too far. It was an intense fire. "Man, smoke was everywhere," neighbor Tracy Karge said. And neighbors watched as the heavy smoke and flames quickly spread across the old Bayer Lumber Yard and dangerously close to homes. "It's pretty crazy. I've never seen anything like this or a fire like this around this area ever," neighbor Joshua Gorsett said. Some eyewitnesses are telling police they saw a couple of suspicious looking teens running from a hay barn as the fire started. "He saw a couple of kids. They ran out of the barn over there and went back over yonder somewhere, I guess where they live," Karge said. The fire got out of hand fast, burning at least eight acres. And the emergency workers had a tough time containing it. "With the wind and the dry conditions, initially before we got here, it already spread and even once we got there, it jumped over us a few times," said Scott Schoonover with the Spring Fire Department. It took about 100 firefighters from nine agencies to knock out the flames. Two of them had to be treated on scene for heat exhaustion. We also found out 900 people nearby were without water since the fire affected water tanks on the property which serves those homes. "With the dryness that we have and the people that live out here and the homes that are being lost and just livestock that's just out here in this part of Spring, just the sadness that's going on with everything else," Realtor Kevin Reynolds said. "It's just the last thing we need with everything that we've seen happening with our economy and this heat wave and the storms, it's just another added loss to somebody." Arson investigators were still on the scene late Friday, but they've yet to release details about who or what caused this fire. (Copyright ©2011 KTRK-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.) Get more Local »
