Teen accused of setting fire to equipment storage facility of Cy-Fair Sports Association

Jalen Laron Mays, 19, is charged with arson.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A teenager is accused of setting fire to the storage facility of the Cy-Fair Sports Association earlier this month.

Back on September 7, Eyewitness News told you about the blaze that damaged the equipment garage at the Queenston baseball complex and destroyed thousands of dollars worth of equipment. The garage was gutted by the fire and investigators say the fire was incendiary caused by an open flame igniting combustibles.

The charred equipment inside was once used to help maintain nine baseball fields used by more than 2,500 kids.

Now a man is charged in the case. Court documents state Jalen Laron Mays was seen by a witness coming out of the parking lot at around the time of the blaze. The witness said he saw the fire and didn't see anyone else in the area. The witness called 911 to report the fire and give a description of the individual leaving the park.

Police say Mays was stopped after the fire call near the location of the fire and that he was wearing clothes matching the description given by the witness.

According to investigators, Mays had paint oxidation marks on both shoulders that matched the exterior wall of the structure that was burned and was carrying a lighter.

Mays, 19, is charged with arson.

Officials with the sports league told Eyewitness News there was no insurance on the building. CFSA is soliciting donations of money, time or resources to help remove the damaged building, rebuild it, and replace the lost equipment for the complex.

Fire destroys youth sports league field house

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- The season may be over, but the heartache is just beginning for a youth sports league after fire destroys their property in Pasadena.

The only fortunate element of this story is the timing. Although sectional playoffs are now underway, the spring season for the league is long over, and that leaves the Pasadena group with a lot of donations to raise before the fall season begins.

The pictures posted on the Pasadena Pee-Wee League's website show players and family, the heart of any team. The field house and concession stand aren't shown, and on Thursday, it was too late to capture it as it once was.

"Our garage where we stored our pitching machines, our lawn mowers, ladders, it's all gone," Pasadena Pee-Wee League President Ray Valenzuela said.

At 3am, the Pasadena Fire Department was called to Strawberry Park. The two-story building was reduced to only one as the roof collapsed. The building was destroyed, along with everything inside.

"We do have a roof collapsed. We had to bring out some machinery so that we can get the roof off of some of the other structures so that we can actually make entry to do an investigation and to run our dogs," Pasadena Fire Marshal David Brannon said.

The dog is trained to detect accelerant. Investigators are collecting evidence to determine whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set.

But for Valenzuela, the cause is secondary to the result.

"I was out there this morning and I did tear up watching, and I've been telling my son all day long I feel like I lost something," he said.

Somewhere in all the debris are trophies spanning 40 years of kids playing baseball on the field that can't be replaced. It's what Valenzuela's son remembers from his first games.

"Every time I go up there, I see baseball stuff like equipment and everything and it reminds me of playing here," former player Ray Valenzuela Jr. said.

But it's more than memories. All the concession equipment that helped feed the fans is gone, along with computers and backup equipment for players who can't afford their own.

The team will have to replace all that, and all-star player "Panchito" Guerrero plans to help.

"Try to get money and support this stuff and try to get back all this stuff," Guerrero said.

The building itself is owned by the city of Pasadena. The fire chief says it will eventually be replaced, but the league has to provide everything inside.

The Important Sporting Events That Take Place in Houston and Their Professional Sports Teams

Houston, Texas is big in every way; it is the biggest city in a state where people often refer to the slogan, "everything is bigger in Texas". Sports are no exception with Houston having professional teams in every sport except the NHL and have hosted some of the world's largest sporting events in the world right in this southern city according to a Houston 3PL warehouse company. Some of these huge events that have happened in Houston are Wrestle mania, MLB All Star game, US Men's clay court championships, LPGA Championships and the Super bowl two times. The facilities here are amazing and are top of the line with Houston having the first domed stadium ever seen in the world that surpassed the Houston public warehouse for indoor events. Houston also has the NFL's first retractable roof stadium called Reliant Stadium.

The major league baseball team in Houston is called the Houston Astros and they play at Minute maid Park that used to be known as Enron field. 2005 goes down as the Astros most successful season making it to the World Series against the Chicago White Sox. The team was originally known as the Colt.45's but changed when they moved into the first domed stadium called the Astrodome. This name was the reference to the importance the space program had in the city of Houston. After that move into the Astrodome, they renamed the team to the Houston Astros.

Football is a favorite sport in Texas and the professional team in Houston is the Houston Texans. They are a new team having started in only 2002 after the longtime Houston Oilers were purchased and moved to Tennessee. The newly formed Texans get to play in Reliant Stadium which is a great stadium with a retractable roof. This can be closed for poor weather or extreme heat which is common in this city. Gary Kubiak is the current head coach of the Houston Texans and the owner of the football organization is Bob McNair.

The professional basketball team in this city is called the Houston Rockets and was started in 1967 in San Diego and then moved to Houston four years later. The name refers to the space and the rocket programs in Houston. Two of the best players for the Houston rockets were Moses Malone who played for them in the late 70's and early 80's and Hakeem Olajuwon who played in the 90's both earning NBA MVP of the Year honors. Another notable player was the 7 foot 6 inch Chinese center, Yao Ming who became one of the most recognizable NBA players when he signed to be on the Houston Rockets in 2002.

The major league soccer team in Houston is called the Houston Dynamo and is the newest addition to the city's professional sports teams starting in 2005. Famous professional boxer, Oscar De la Hoya has part ownership in the team that plays at Robertson stadium located on the University of Houston campus and is planning on building their own soccer stadium currently.

Connor Sullivan recently stored the overstock from his store in a Houston public warehouse. He uses a Houston 3pl warehouse to pack and ship his merchandise across the country.

Certain sports could lose all school funding

By Demond FernandezFRIENDSWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- You've heard it a lot lately -- school districts across our state are making tough decisions in a tough economy. Now budget cuts are hitting another local school district, and parents are not happy.

The target of these cuts is athletics. A proposal would cut funding for certain sports at Friendswood ISD.

The superintendent says this school district is nickel and diming it right now. She says it just doesn't have the money to continue supporting some sports programs.

Around Friendswood ISD, parents like Marie Tkac say sporting events bring the community together. Her son is on the football team.

"Programs like that, parents rely on that," she said.

But now a big budget blow has the Friendswood school board considering $40,000 worth of cuts in the athletics department, among other areas.

Tkac said, "I think that would be a big mistake."

I found out about 150 to 200 students in this district participate in non-university interscholastic league sanctioned sports. The superintendent told me this district is too broke to support lacrosse, swimming and gymnastics.

The board is also looking at possibly slashing funding for co-ed soccer at the junior high, as well as high school water polo. But the superintendent says those teams would continue using the facility.

"It's going to make a big difference," Tkac said. "It's going to be a negative effect, unfortunately."

Board members say with a $4 million budget deficit looming, they just don't think they'll have the money to pay non-UIL coach stipends, team travel to games and entry fees.

They say the athletic director is also proposing $11,000 in cuts for his UIL football team. That has Christopher Tkac concerned.

"I would think it would be a decrease in quite acceptable rated equipment, which would probably take an impact," he said.

Board members say the athletic director is also proposing his UIL teams limit the amount of tournaments outside the area to save money on travel.

The board is also considering major cuts in other areas as well.
