Thief nabs donation jar from Pasadena restaurant

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are looking for a man is accused of stealing from a restaurant and what he ran off with were donations for a good cause.

They are known for their catfish, but team members who workat Sudie's in Pasadena say it's like a family. So when one of their employees' son's was murdered in gang violence in El Salvador, they decided to help.

"We were collecting money to help with the funeral expenses and also for a couple of their family members who are still there," Sudie's employee Bonnie Williams said.

Employees held car washes and bake sales and they had a donation jar at the checkout that had grown due to the generosity of customers.

But on Wednesday afternoon, a man can be see from the restaurant cameras coming through the doors. He approaches the counter then seems to wander around for a couple of minutes. He makes a phone call and then he makes his move, grabbing not only the donation jar, but the tip jar at the counter too.

It was right then Bonnie Williams walked out from her lunch break.

"I see him reaching for the donation jar and I'm like, 'Hey what are you doing?'" she said.

Williams followed him out the front door, just in time to see him get into a getaway car in the parking lot. She says the passenger door was wide open.

"It's really sad that somebody would do that," Williams said.

Employees believe the thief got away with a few hundred dollars.

"It was getting pretty full and it was great that people were showing their support and for someone to just come and get it, it's gross, it's sick," Sudie's waitress Jodi Blair said.

And while they may have to start over, they aren't giving up.

"I just hope that somebody out there maybe recognizes this person and identify him because this is a sad situation for this family," Williams said.

Williams says the thief and his driver were in an older model two door red Honda.

If you have any information, call Pasadena police.

Newborn found in plastic container outside Pasadena medical facility

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A newborn is now in the custody of CPS officials after he was found in a plastic container outside of a Pasadena medical facility.

A worker discovered the baby outside the Bayside Urgent Care Center on Preston near Fairmont Saturday night.

Police say the baby was only hours old when he was found. Noah Smith, the worker who found him, tells us it was a shocking sight.

"He was definitely a newborn, basically the eyes hadn't been able to focus on anything yet. He was very clean, it looked like someone had taken care before dropping him off," Smith said.

So far, none of the baby's family members have come forward to claim the child.

The Texas Safe Haven Law allows a parent to give up the custody of their child up to 60 days old at any hospital, medical service provider or child welfare agency but the parent must leave the child with an on-duty employee.

Pasadena church fire ruled arson

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A three-alarm fire that erupted at an old church building in Pasadena has been ruled arson, officials announced Sunday.

According to Pasadena Fire Marshal David Brenham, investigators are following some leads in an effort to catch the person or people responsible for the blaze.

The fire happened around 3pm Friday in the 3500 block of Red Bluff and it burned into the night.

The vacant building once housed the Sharron Lutheran Church. In the 60's, the building was the home of the mega-church of its day in the then-small city of Pasadena. During the blaze Friday, firefighters had to collapse it in order to get the flames under control.

No injuries were reported.

A woman who works at a day care that was next door to the building tells us two people were seen running away from it just moments before the fire erupted.

Anyone with information that could help in this investigation is urged to call 713-475-5556, or call Crime Stoppers if you would like to remain anonymous.

Firefighters collapse old Pasadena building to extinguish blaze

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Firefighters had to collapse an old building in Pasadena to bring a three-alarm blaze that erupted Friday afternoon under control.

By nighttime, debris was all that remained of the former church. No injuries were reported, but for seven hours, officials kept a major street closed and put many lives on hold.

It began as a small trail of smoke, but erupted into a three-alarm fire, all in a matter of minutes. It took what had once been the Sharron Lutheran Church building with it. In the 60's, it was a mega-church of its day in the then small city of Pasadena.

The city's fire chief, Laney Armstrong, remembers it well -- at its best and in recent years, at its worst.

"It's been vacant for quite a while; we've had some issues with vagrancy, and the building wasn't secured. It's been for sale for quite a while," Armstrong said.

The building was beyond saving. Next door, though, was a daycare with 30 children inside. The children were evacuated safely to a nearby YMCA.

"They were excited, they thought we were going on a field trip actually. They're like, 'Oh a fire!' and then when we took off, we're gong on a field trip," day care employee Victoria Garza said.

The Pasadena Fire Department is volunteer. Those volunteers had worked early Friday morning on another large fire. So when this fire erupted, the Houston Fire Department pitched in. With combined forces, the fire was brought under control.

Meanwhile, people stood across the street and watched what they'd seen for years crumble before them.

"I seen it but nobody ever paid attention to it. And then a 10, 20 minutes later, the whole thing, trees were catching on fire," neighbor Jordan Martinez said.

The fire wasn't completely out by early evening when a bulldozer pulled the gutted building to the ground. The building had been for sale, now on the land has value.

Officials had blocked off the Red Bluff, the street on which the church sat, until they had the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but a day care worker tells us she that she had heard two people were seen running from the building just moments before the blaze.

Pasadena mom charged after baby drinks lighter fluid

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A Pasadena mother allegedly let her toddler drink lighter fluid by failing to watch the child.

Daphne Brooks, 41, is charged with injury to a child. According to court documents, in June 2011, Brooks allegedly left her 16-month-old baby outside her apartment without adult supervision, where the toddler was able to ingest lighter fluid.

The baby was taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a form of pneumonia, due to the lighter fluid. He spent nine days in the hospital for the pneumonia and the fact that he was diagnosed with "failure to thrive" due to lack of care by Brooks, the court documents state. The baby was found to be far below average size for his age.

Hospital staff said Brooks seemed disinterested, reluctant to talk about the baby, and couldn't give them any details of his diet or care, even though she identified herself as the primary caregiver.

In January 2012, Brooks told police she was at work when the incident with the lighter fluid took place. However, police say that in June she gave a statement saying she had gone inside, leaving the baby outside. Additionally, she could not provide the name and address of her employer, and when she took the baby to the hospital, she filled out paperwork claiming she was unemployed.

Bail for the felony charge has been set at $10,000.

Pasadena parents accused of nearly starving children

See it on TV? Check here. PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A Pasadena father and mother are now facing charges after their baby boy was found to be severely malnourished, and we spoke with the grandmother and great grandmother of the six children who were removed from the couple's home.

Nicholas and Andrea Murrey are the parents of the 8-week-old baby boy. Each is wanted on a charge of injury to a child by omission. No one answered the door at their home on Friday, but Eyewitness News was able to track down Andrea's grandmother.

"What can you say? They're my grandchildren," said Andrea's grandmother who asked us not to identify her.

She says she told her granddaughter to feed her children more, but detectives found something else.

"The child weighed seven pounds when it was born, and when our officers made entry into the home and CPS got involved, the child still weighed seven pounds," Pasadena Police Department Spokesman Vance Mitchell said.

It all began last August when Andrea brought her four-year-old daughter for treatment at Bayshore Medical Center. Doctors say the girl was dirty and had bruises, so police were called. Soon, CPS moved the girl and her three siblings out of the home.

"You think they're better off in CPS custody?" we asked the great grandmother.

"I do. And I know it hurts so bad, because for some reason, we can't even see them for ourselves," she said.

Investigators say at one point, there were six children inside the house. The Murreys had four, and Nicolas Murrey's girlfriend also live there with her two kids.

"Her father and I don't appreciate her being there, but she's her own person, and we can't stop her. She doesn't live with us, we can't tell her what to do; but I'm in charge of her children," said Bobbie McCoy, the grandmother of the other two children.

McCoy is now raising the toddlers even as her daughter still lives with the Murreys, a couple that the great grandmother describes, as unfit parents.

"They couldn't provide for them; it's why they would be in a better place," the great grandmother said.

While family members cope with what's happened, police are hoping the suspects will turn themselves in.

Woman's body found under bridge in Pasadena

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found Sunday under a bridge on the banks of Vince Bayou in Pasadena.

According to officials, the female body was discovered by a passer-by sometime before 11am at South Shaver and Queens. That civilian then apparently flagged down and alerted a nearby police officer.

Authorities have not released the woman's name, but they say it looks like she may have been murdered.

A spokesperson for the Pasadena Police Department said the woman was nude and was severely beaten, specifically around the face, and she may have ben sexually assaulted. They describe her also as a Latina in her mid-30s.

"It's someone's child, daughter, sister," nearby resident Jaime Almaguer said. "We live in a cruel world right now."

From Almaguer's front door you can see the spot where the body was found, but no one at his home saw or heard anything suspicious.

"Everybody was celebrating New Year's with their gunshots, stuff like that, but nothing that was out of the ususal," he said.

Police say they found identification on the body and have tenatively identified the victim as a Pasadena resident. They have also talked to a man who they say is her husband.

Investigators aren't saying if she was killed at the site or just dumped there.

The scene is immediately adjacent to Pasadena Fire Department Station No. 4. It's a volunteer fire station and no one was there overnight, but police hope one of the surveillance cameras outside the fire station might give them images to help catch the killer.

If you have information that may help investigators, call Pasadena police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Two burglary rings busted in Pasadena

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A Pasadena neighborhood terrorized by not one, but two groups of burglars. Police say they've put an end to a crime spree that had homeowners living in fear.

We first told you about the spike in burglaries in the Pasadena area less than two weeks ago. At the time, there were 10 burglaries in just one week's time.

Pasadena police say those 19 burglaries look to be the work of two separate burglary crews who didn't know each other and now four people have been charged in that rash of crime.

On the quiet streets of the Crenshaw Park neighborhood in Pasadena, there is a sense of relief.

"It's just crazy that somebody would even think about that; somebody would do that around Christmas time when people are trying to get money together," said resident Quincey Daniels.

On Wednesday, Pasadena police announced the arrest of four people in connection with 16 burglaries in the Crenshaw Park area -- and 19 burglaries overall -- between November 20 and December 18.

Damon Kent Marshall and Veronica Marie Villareal are both charged with burglary of a habitation. And brothers David and Alonzo Gonzalez are both charged with felony theft. Police say Marshall and Villareal made up one burglary crew and the Gonzalez brothers made up another.

"Marshall and Villareal were companions so to speak, but we don't know about any connectivity between those folks and the Gonzalez brothers," said Assistant Chief Bud Corbett with the Pasadena Police Department.

Officers say on December 15 they spotted the Gonzalez brothers casing a house on Dorsetshire. They fled on foot, then in a vehicle occupied by a third suspect. Two were apprehended and found to be in possession of stolen property including a TV, camera, jewelry, computer and copier equipment from two separate residences, one on Kenwick and one on Palm Spring in Houston.

Marshall and Villareal were arrested after information from neighbors led them to the home where the pair lived, not too far from the neighborhood.

"That allowed the suspects quick access," said Asst. Chief Corbett.

On December 18, police say Marshall was apprehended on a hike and bike trail near Crenshaw Park and found to be in violation of parole. Police say they converged a South Circle Park residence and found a large quantity of stolen property including jewelry, electronics, cameras, computer equipment, DVDs and a video game system.

Most of the burglaries happened on side streets off of Parkland Road, and in some cases, the burglars hit one home, then hit another right next door.

As the neighbors prepare for Christmas, they hope their homes are no longer targets for serial thieves.

"I feel relieved that everybody can have a great Christmas," said Daniels.

Marshall, 29, is charged with two counts of burglary of a habitation. He is in jail without bond. Marshall has multiple prior convictions for burglary, criminal mischief and unlawful carrying of a weapon. No bond has been set for Marshall.

Villareal, 36, is also charged with burglary of a habitation. Back in October, she was charged with criminal mischief in an unrelated case. She has a previous burglary conviction as well. Bond has been set at $40,000.

David Ray Gonzalez, 25, is charged with felony theft. He has a previous conviction for engaging in organized criminal activity. Bond has been set at $5,000.

His brother, Alonzo Gonzalez, 22, is also charged with felony theft. His bond has been set at $15,000.

Villareal is the only suspect charged who is not in custody.

Pasadena police say there was a third suspect who got away when they arrested the Gonzalez brothers. That suspect is still at large.

Some Pasadena residents warned about rise in home burglaries

See it on TV? Check here. PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Pasadena police are telling neighbors in the Crenshaw Park area to be on alert. Close to a dozen homes have been broken into recently.

Neighbors are taking the warnings seriously. For one homeowner we talked to, the news hit a little too close to home.

After a string of home burglaries, residents in the Pasadena neighborhood say this Christmas, it's not the Grinch they're worried about.

"We think they went in the through the back patio glass because she said when she got home it was opened and the blinds were blowing," one resident said.

This woman, who did not want to be identified, told us thieves broke into her neighbor's house just the other day. Pasadena police say there have been 10 reported break-ins in the last two weeks in the area near Crenshaw Park.

"It's just not right that they think they can just come in your house and take stuff that we work so hard for," said resident Rita Sills.

In most cases, the suspects have entered from the back of the homes, breaking out windows or, in two cases, by crawling in through the doggie door. They've taken cash, jewelry and electronics.

Police have stepped up patrols and are they're asking residents to stay vigilant, especially during the day.

"Now we're going to start keeping everything real tight and keeping extra lights on and stuff," said resident Amy McCartney. "Maybe that will deter them. Maybe they'll think more people are home than what actually is."

Police say it's also important to pay attentionto anyone soliciting in your neighborhood, or people claiming to be utility workers. If you see anything suspicious, call police immediately. No arrests have been made in any of these cases.
