Men charged in wreck that killed boy, 4

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A young child was killed late last night when police say the car he was in broke down and was hit by a driver southeast Houston. And now that boy's father and another man are facing drunk driving charges.

Investigators say about 10pm, Jamal Green, 38, (above, right) was in a Nissan Sentra with his 4-year-old son on the northbound lanes of South Loop near Old Galveston Road. According to witnesses, the car they were in was having mechanical issues and was either stalled or moving very slowly.

Police say another driver, Jamie Rodriguez Reyes, 42, (above, left) was driving a Chevy Lumina and was also traveling northbound on the South Loop East and struck the rear of the car Green was driving. Reyes' car then hit a Chevy Tahoe one lane over.

Green and his son were both transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where the son died from his injuries. Green's injuries were said to be minor.

Reyes was transported to Ben Taub Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police believe both Reyes and Green were intoxicated at the time of the accident. Green is now charged with felony DWI with a child under 15. Reyes is charged with DWI.

The Tahoe's driver was not hurt. Clerks at a nearby gas station watched the scene unfold from a surveillance camera.

"It's crazy how things happen like when you are intoxicated or what things can happen like this kind of serious accidents and killing of innocent people, especially babies," said store clerk Basel Abdalfatah.

Police say that alcohol and speed were both factors in this crash.

Both men were taken to jail. Bond for Reyes is set at $500. Green's bond is $2,000. The child's identity will be released by the medical examiner.
