Iranian man living in Houston gets prison for mail, ID theft

AP  HOUSTON -- An Iranian man living in the Houston area has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for stealing mail, setting up fake identities and financial fraud.

Prosecutors in Houston say Hassan Ali Pejouhesh took advantage of the U.S. postal system and about 500 people were affected by the scheme.

A jury in April convicted Pejouhesh of four counts of bank fraud, one count of possession of stolen mail and three counts of aggravated identity theft. A federal judge on Thursday sentenced him to a total of 247 months behind bars. The court also ordered payment of nearly $218,000 in restitution.

The 63-year-old Iranian national has been in custody since 2010 when authorities discovered stolen mail, fake credit cards and cash in his apartment.

Rash of burglaries, theft in one north Harris County neighborhood

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There is concern from neighbors in one north Harris County community who are dealing with a big spike in burglaries.

There have been nearly two dozen homes broken into in just the past month in the Northridge Park area, nestled between I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road near Bush Intercontinental Airport.

In this neighborhood, people work hard and generally feel safe, especially with patrol unit cars parked in driveways.

"Sheriff stays there, HPD officer stays there," said one neighbor.

But lately, that's changed.

"It was just a surreal feeling to come into your house knowing someone had rummaged through there," said crime victim Greg Okuhara.

Last week, Okuhara came home from work to find someone kicked open his front door, ransacked his bedroom and stole his stuff.

"Some computers, Xbox gaming system, golf clubs and some hockey jerseys," said Okuhara.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office crime report, he is not alone. In the last 30 days, there have been 22 home burglaries within the 77073 zip code.

"I didn't think it was that high, but I knew it was pretty, pretty bad," said neighbor Roy Jackson. "Then when I saw it was kicked in a couple doors from my house I figured yes; that's why I'm checking on my stuff right now."

Forcing folks like Jackson to leave work twice a day, just to check on his house. It's a luxury most here can't afford, but Jackson's neighbors have peace of mind knowing someone is looking out for them.

"When your sense of security is violated like that, it's unfortunate," said Okuhara.

Besides the burglaries, there have been 32 thefts from cars in the last month.

Tip leads police to donation theft suspect

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A man who police say admits to having stolen donations for funeral expenses was located, thanks to an alert TV viewer.

Team members at Sudie's Catfish Restaurant in Pasadena decided to help when the son of one of their employees was murdered in gang violence in El Salvador.

"We were collecting money to help with the funeral expenses and also for a couple of their family members who are still there," Sudie's employee Bonnie Williams said.

Employees held car washes and bake sales and they had a donation jar at the checkout that had grown due to the generosity of customers.

But on Wednesday afternoon, a man who was caught on camera grabbed the donation jar as well as a tip jar at the counter.

After the story aired on abc13 on Wednesday evening, Pasadena police received a tip call with a name of a possible suspect. Officers arrested Jordan Alexander Ybarra on an unrelated warrant, and while questioning him, they say he admitted taking the donation and tip jars.

Ybarra, 21, has been charged with theft.

DNA links man to theft of three golf carts at Houston National Cemetery

Robert Torres Robert Torres, 32, is charged with theft.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- DNA from blood left behind at the crime scene has linked a man to the theft of three golf carts at Houston National Cemetery.

According to court documents, the cemetery foreman told police that he closed the cemetery on the afternoon of Friday, December 16, 2011 and when he returned the following Monday, he discovered that three utility carts had been stolen. The foreman said a fourth golf cart had been tampered with and blood was left on the floor.

In addition, two wheels were stolen off a utility trailer and the foreman told police that a pickup truck and a Chevrolet Uplander were damaged in an attempt to steal them.

On January 31 of this year, the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab confirmed a DNA match between the blood left in the cart and a genetic profile belonging to Robert Torres.

Court documents state the total loss was more than $36,000.

Torres, 32, is charged with theft.

ABC13 report leads to charges against two suspects in jewelry store theft

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two men have been charged for allegedly stealing from a jewelry store after tipsters saw an ABC13 report.

On August 12, the owner of a jewelry store inside the Food Town Grocery Store at 2770 N. Sam Houston Parkway in north Houston told Harris Co. Sheriff's deputies that three black males came to his store, gained access to his showcase with a key and stole jewelry worth nearly $50,000, including 72 diamond gold rings, 108 gold rings and 75 gold bracelets.

The incident was captured on surveillance video. Court documents state that Undrake Delon Clark and Jody Tyrone Evans, along with a third unidentified male, were the alleged thieves. In the video, police say Clark could be seen removing keys from his pocket and trying to open the showcase while Evans and the other suspect were seen acting as lookouts.

Several attempts were unsuccessful and the suspects could be seen leaving, then returning with new keys and opening the showcase. Clark is then seen removing jewelry trays and loading them into a grocery bag being held by Evans.

Store owner Jacob Cho told Eyewitness News, "It was locked when he tried to steal it, so I had no idea they can unlock the jewelry showcase like this."

After that Eyewitness News report aired on August 20 showing the surveillance video of the suspects, authorities say they received numerous leads in the case.

Police say the store owner was able to pick out both Evans and Clark from a photo array, and that surveillance video of the getaway minivan is possibly the same make and model as a Chevy Venture Van registered in Clark's name.

If you have information on the third unidentified suspect, you are asked to call the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Court documents show Evans has prior convictions for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in 2003 and robbery in 1994.

Two people arrested in theft of pricy puppy

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two people are in custody, accused of stealing a dog from a northwest Houston pet store worth thousands of dollars.

Police are withholding the names of the two people arrested until they've been charged. Police say the two were behind the theft of an English bulldog valued at $3,000. The dog was stolen from Pet City Houston on Bammel Westfield.

A tip led authorities to the suspects at an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Greens Crossing.

Pet City Houston Manager Samatha Stack says the theft was captured on store surveillance video, which showed a woman bringing two small children along for the theft.

"They are doing wrong to the dog and they are doing wrong to the kids," Stack said. "That's just, it's horrible parenting."

Store workers say the woman brought her two daughters along with two males. Surveillance footage clearly shows one of the suspects holding the expensive puppy while the little girls pet the dog.

"I turned to the guy. I asked him, 'well how can I help you? Is there a puppy you'd like to see today?'" Stack said. "He pointed to the dog and said I'm just waiting to see if they take that one."

The video then shows the mother leave the two male suspects behind, walk out of the store, load her kids into the getaway car and back it close to the door.

Within minutes, the suspects take off with the bulldog puppy as the manager runs after them.

"I ran back inside and was yelling, 'call the cops! Call the cops!'" Stack said.

Now this puppy is without his sister, who is still at the pet store, and the store is out thousands of dollars.

"Our main concern isn't the fact that we've lost money," Stack said. "It's the fact that these dogs, of all dogs to takes these are the ones that need the most care."

The dog appeared to be unharmed and was returned to store owners. Reporter Sonia Azad, who's covering this story today for Eyewitness News, says the two people arrested admitted their involvement in the thefts.

Protect yourself from ID theft by shredding documents

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houstonians took a step to protect themselves against identity theft by safely shredding their personal documents Saturday.

The city has teamed up with Data Shredding Services of Texas to provide sites where people can dispose of sensitive documents that shouldn't be tossed in the trash.

Saturday's event was held at the Houston Police Department Westside Station on South Dairy Ashford.

One pile of papers after another were handed over for shredding Saturday.

"Mostly credit card solicitation," Nancy Radecki said, telling us what she was having shredded. "Old credit cards, that kind of thing.

The city and DSS are providing this free service in hopes of curbing crimes like identity theft.

"People need to realize dumpster diving is the number one cause of identity theft now," said Scott Degrassi with DSS.

DSS estimates it will shred 20,000 to 30,000 pounds of documents this weekend alone, even allowing people to watch as their documents are securely destroyed.

"We have a shredder at home. It's just easier bringing it here," patron Katherine Bell said.

This was the first of many upcoming shredding events across Houston. They will be held monthly at different locations through August. Each event is a chance to protect yourself from crime.

If you were unable to make it Saturday, check out one of the following locations on the dates listed: May 19, 10am-2pm: HPD North Station, 9455 West Montgomery Rd. - Houston 77088June 23, 9am-1pm: Kingwood METRO Park and Ride, 3210 West Lake Houston Pkwy. - Kingwood 77339July 28, 9am-1pm: HPD Eastside Station, 7525 Sherman - Houston 77012August 11, 9am-1pm: HPD Clear Lake Station, 2855 Bay Area Blvd. - Houston 77058(Copyright ©2012 KTRK-TV/DT.   HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man living at a southwest Houston retirement home is accused of stealing money from an elderly woman after he reportedly convinced her that she had won a prize.

Robert Cornell, 81, is charged with theft. According to court documents, on September 29 , 2011, Cornell called a 92-year-old woman and told her she had won a lottery. But before she could collect her prize money, Cornell reportedly convinced her that she had to pay the taxes.

The woman complied, sending checks for $5,000 and $3,400 to Cornell's mailing address. Those checks were cashed at a southwest Houston Wells Fargo bank.

Investigators say the woman received more calls asking for more money. The victim, who had never received a prize, became suspicious and called police.

Through an investigation, police were able to identify Cornell, who lives at a retirement home. They say his driver's license photo matches bank photos of the man who cashed the victim's checks. Tellers were also able to identify him from his driver's license photo.

Bail in the case is set at $5,000.

Man guilty of ID theft, fraud over Apple items

AP  HOUSTON -- A Houston-area man has pleaded guilty to using fake IDs and stolen credit card numbers to buy more than $200,000 worth of Apple iPads and IPhones.

Federal prosecutors in Houston say Sharif John Reid of League City pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated identity theft and access device fraud. Sentencing will be April 23 for Reid, who faces up to 22 years in in prison.

Reid was on supervised release for access device fraud when he was arrested Aug. 7 in the Houston area. Prosecutors say the name on a credit card that Reid tried to use was linked to fraudulent purchases at other Apple stores in Louisiana and Texas.

Investigators say Reid used credit card numbers skimmed from an Austin business. Further details on the establishment weren't immediately released.

Spring man arrested in MO for theft of a military bus

See it on TV? Check here. AP  CONWAY, MO -- Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old Texas man suspected of driving a military bus stolen from Springfield, Missouri.

The Lebanon Daily Record reports that Tom Mourning of Spring, Texas was charged Friday in Missouri's Laclede County with one count of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

It all started Thursday when the Conway Police Department was called to a restaurant where Mourning had trouble paying his $13.86 bill because his credit cards were declined. Police said he had been "very unruly and disorderly" to waitresses and many customers.

An officer escorted Mourning to his motel room, and Mourning allegedly tried to go in the bathroom and shut the door to keep the officer out.

Mourning was being held on $25,000 bond on Saturday.

Ex-HPD officer accused of theft takes plea deal

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A former Houston police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to a charge of theft by a public servant.

Stefan Riha struck a deal with prosecutors so that he would change his plea in exchange for two years of probation, a $500 fine and 120 hours of community service. He also had to permanently surrender his peace officer's license.

Riha, 29, was arrested by undercover officers conducting a sting in May 2011 in the 3600 block of Fondren. Investigators say he made a traffic stop on an officer posing as a motorist, put that officer in the back of his patrol car while then pocketing $1,100 from inside the vehicle the undercover officer was driving. "As a police officer, he betrayed the trust that comes with the badge by taking money that belongs to citizens. It was important to us that he no longer have that opportunity," said prosecutor Maritza Antu. No one answered when we went to Riha's home Tuesday for comment. His attorney did not return calls. Prosecutors say they targeted Riha in the undercover operation after receiving two other complaints that he had stolen money from motorists. Investigators have never found enough evidence to pursue charges in those cases. Riha can never again work as a police officer and right now cannot posses a gun. He remains out of custody unless he violates probation. If he does, he can be sent to jail for up to two years. (Copyright ©2012 KTRK-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.)

Galleria jewelry theft caught on camera

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We're getting an inside look at the violent robbery of a Galleria jewelry store that happened in the thick of the holiday shopping rush. It was a fast crime carried out three days before Christmas while the mall was open and packed with one of its biggest crowds of the year.

The video shows just how quickly the thieves were in and out of the crowded mall, running off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in Rolex watches.

Just two days before Christmas, witnesses described the chaos in the Galleria mall.

"Some are getting on the floor flat chested, others are dragging their girlfriends along, their wives, I think I even saw some folks with strollers," said eyewitness Bryan Parras.

Investigators say three men entered the crowded store and shattered the glass of a display case inside.

After clearing the case of its contents, the suspects left through a nearby door and took off in a vehicle waiting outside.

Now the pictures of what went on inside Ben Bridge Jewelers as three men stormed in around nine o'clock that night.

"I'm sure it was pretty startling when they busted the case," said former HPD Officer Rob Kimmons, who now owns his own security company. "Looks like he has some kind of hammer or chisel there."

He examined the quick video of the crime.

"In a case like this you have to deal with the crowds, but if you can get in and out quickly like they did, they create chaos by the mere fact of breaking the glass. It's just difficult for any kind of security response to happen that quickly," said Kimmons.

The thieves made off with almost $400,000 in high end goods including several rare Rolex watches.

Along with the surveillance video, Crime Stoppers released a picture similar to one of the rare watches stolen -- the Yacht Master II Rolex made of oyster, stainless steel and Everose gold. It's believed there are only 12 in the state of Texas.

"Anyone who would plan this type of a crime during the height of the Christmas shopping season, underneath lights where there are witnesses around and surveillance video is recording. Anyone who would do that is a dangerous, violent felon in our community and they need to be stopped before there is a greater tragedy," said Katherine Cabaniss with Crime Stoppers.

This former police officer says investigators have likely checked cameras throughout the mall for pictures of the getaway car and even gone back several weeks to see if these same individuals were casing the store.

"I think it's obvious in this instance they knew exactly what they were going for; in less than a minute they were out of there," Kimmons said.

The suspects are described as three African-American males, approximately 20-30 years old. At the time of the offense, the suspects wore dark colored clothing, gloves, masks and hats to conceal their identity.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for any information called in to the 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online at www.crime-stoppers.org that leads to the filing of felony charges or arrest of the suspects in this case.

Theft suspects arrested at Rice Village music store

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We have exclusive video of something very unusual -- suspects being arrested in Rice Village because they had a stash of instruments like cellos and violins.

Police say the group went into a Rice Village music store to sell some instruments, but the deal didn't end as they had planned.

Police cruisers lined University Avenue once they got the call. Officers say a small group of men and women arrived at Amati Music Store in Rice Village and were ready to sell thousands of dollars in stringed instruments. From cellos to violins, they had a small orchestra in their trunk.

But the owners of the store knew something wasn't quite right. The instruments matched a report from an Austin music store that recently had a large theft of its stringed instruments. The store had notified other music stores in the area to be on the lookout.

Before the suspects could make the sale, police were on scene. The accused thieves were handcuffed, and the instruments were confiscated by police.

Police say four suspects were taken to jail and one got away.

Police demo steps to deter holiday theft

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Thieves often try to take advantage of shoppers during the holiday season, so police are asking you to take steps to avoid being a victim.

Houston police say theft is a crime of opportunity and proved it with a stage purse theft at the HEB store on Buffalo Speedway. The demonstration showed how easy it is for someone to snatch a wallet from an unzipped purse while the shopper has her back turned for just a few seconds.

"So we're really asking to close those purses up, clutch them very tight and stay focused and be aware of your surroundings," said HPD Officer James Sobota.

Officers also went through the grocery store parking lot handing out warning notices to cars with valuables left in plain sight.

Police say that's to tempting burglars and you should always lock your purchases in your trunk.

Boy, 3, taken during car theft reunited with mom

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 3-year-old boy who was taken during a car theft in west Harris County was reunited with his mother Monday night.

The incident happened around 7:30pm at a convenience store in the 2900 block of Barker Cypress Road near Morton Road. Authorities say the vehicle was stolen while the mother ran quickly inside the store and left her 3-year-old son in her running car.

"It was the worst experience I've ever experienced in my life," the boy's mother, Lucresa Dobbins, told Eyewitness News. "I thought my life was over."

Dobbins said she decided to just run into the store by herself when she saw no one standing in line at the cash register. While inside, she says she kept her eyes on her 3-year-old son, Jermaine.

"And next thing you know, I see this man, but I'm thinking he's getting in the car with the people next to my car -- because they're getting in their car -- then I see him fiddling with my door, and I'm like what is he doing? So I just immediately run to my car, because by then, he just hopped into my car and was driving off," Dobbins said. "He was trying to drive off and I'm beating on my car and the man in the store is beating on the car and we're trying to get him out and he just backs up, like hey this is my car and I'm leaving in it tonight -- that's how he treated it."

Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. S. Hayes said a witness tried to follow the car for a while but lost it on Interstate 10. The suspect then dropped off the boy at Select Specialty Hospital in the Heights about an hour later, and he was reunited with Dobbins there.

"Everybody's happy now," Hayes said. "The child is safe. Now we just need to locate the car and the suspect."

Authorities describe the stolen car as a black Chevy Malibu with the Texas license plate number DSH 128. The suspect was described only as a Hispanic male, but detectives say they have surveillance video of the suspect stealing the car from the convenience store and dropping the boy off at the hospital.

But a woman who identified herself as Dobbins' mom said she just thanks God her grandchild was found unharmed.

"I just feel sorry for anyone that's had to go through this. I never thought I would, but praise God. God is good," she said.

And Sgt. Hayes said there's a lesson to be learned from Monday night's incident.

"The lesson to this story is never leave your child in a running vehicle for no reason. You're better off just turning the car off, taking the child with you, " Hayes said. "That way you have peace of mind, you don't have these things to worry about."
