Toddler killed in tragic driveway accident

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- On Friday afternoon, a home in northwest Harris County became the scene of a deadly accident, a type of accident that's more common and more deadly than many realize. It's an issue that's changing how cars are made here and around the world.

The father is too distraught to talk about what happened. He returned home Friday night surrounded by friends, who asked that we give him time to grieve.

Investigators say the three-year-old's father didn't know she was nearby when he began backing his truck out of their driveway in the Lakewood Forest subdivision.

"Our little grand-baby played with her. She was a beautiful little girl. I know she was really their darling, their precious. I don't know how they're gonna go on," neighbor Janet Giesen said.

It was early afternoon. Investigators say there was at least one other adult at the house. It's not clear how the child got outside. The father got in the truck to leave, detectives say, and didn't see the little girl right behind the rear of the truck.

"There's nothing to indicate at this point there was anything reckless in nature, anything similar to that," Harris County Pct. 4 Constable's Office Deputy Michael Combest said.

Authorities say the father screamed for help. A neighbor came running, one who just Friday finished a refresher course in CPR and other emergency techniques.

The house is only a mile and a half from St. Luke's Hospital at The Vintage. They piled into the very same truck that hit the girl. The neighbor apparently drove the father and daughter there. The child, though, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"It breaks our hearts. I mean it could happen to anyone, anyone. It was all an accident," neighbor Loren Zuber said.

These types of accidents are all too common. To avoid "back overs" the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers several tips: Actively check mirrors while backing up Teach children not to play in or around carsAlways walk around your vehicle and check before backing upTeach children to move away from a vehicle when a driver gets in or it is startedRoll down the windows while backing up so you can hear what's going on outsideInvestigators say there will be no criminal charges filed here. They consider this a horrible accident. (Copyright ©2012 KTRK-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.) Get more Local »

City employee killed in freak accident

See it on TV? Check here.  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston city worker was killed on the job Thursday in a tragic accident near downtown Houston. He is being described by co-workers as highly respected and valued.

Police tell us it was around 2:30pm Thursday when public works employee, Charles Williams Sr., was run over and killed by his own work truck at Jackson and Gray, just south of the Pierce Elevated in the MIdtown area.

Police say Williams, along with another worker from the department, was clearing sewage lines when their work truck started rolling. That's when they say Williams, 75, tried to stop the truck.

"The operator of the truck made several attempts to stop or slow down and it moved at a very slow speed, traveling down the street while he was trying to get the vehicle to stop, it ended up impacting him and he is deceased at this time," said Lt. Kenneth Campbell with the Houston Police Department.

Police say the other worker who was not involved in the accident witnessed what happened, but he was down the street at the time. A police officer who happened to be patrolling in the area also saw what happened. Investigators are talking to the both of them, hoping to piece together exactly what happened.

Alvin Wright with the Public Works Department released a statement, which read in part, "Mr. Williams is remembered as a valued and highly respected veteran member of the Public Works and Engineering Department and will be greatly missed by his fellow co-workers and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Williams' family during this difficult time."

A co-worker also told us that Williams was a great man, the kind of man who would do anything for anyone.

Eyewitness News actually did a story about Williams back in August 2008 when our cameras followed him around as he cleaned out storm drains.

Spring woman accused of trying to pin blame for serious car accident on ex-husband

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Spring woman is accused of attempting to pin a serious car accident on her ex-husband who was actually working at the time.

According to court documents, on March 8 a driver was seriously injured when a dark colored Ford F-150 struck her vehicle in the 200 block of Cypresswood Dr. in north Harris County. The victim says the driver fled the scene without stopping.

Detectives say they found the license plate in the debris and traced it to a Matthew Wallace. Further investigation revealed that the license had been canceled and a new plate had been issued on March 23, and that the vehicle was involved in another accident on April 22.

Court documents state investigators went to the address listed with the new license plate and observed a Ford F-150 bearing the new plate with front-end damage consistent with the Cypresswood crash.

Investigators interviewed the complainant in both reports, Brenna Nicole Wallace. They say she told them that she drove the truck to a night club where she met her ex-husband, Matthew Wallace, and that they were both intoxicated and left the club in her truck. According to investigators, Brenna Wallace said Matthew Wallace was the driver of the vehicle that night and that he was involved in the accident. They say she admitted to getting new license plates for the truck after the accident.

Court records show that investigators interviewed Matthew Wallace who provided copies of work time sheets that show he was working at the time of the accident. He also provided a copy of his divorce decree which awarded the truck to Brenna Wallace. Investigators say Matthew Wallace showed them a picture that Brenna Wallace texted to him the day of the accident saying she was involved in an accident and showing the damage, and asking him for advice.

Brenna Wallace, 31, is charged with failure to stop and render aid. Bond has been set at $5,000.

Houston police are investigating the fatal traffic accident at 9501 South Sam Houston Parkway about 9:50am on Wednesday.

The victim, a four-month-old girl, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police say their investigation determined the driver was not impaired. No charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation is continuing.
