Westbound lanes of South Loop at Telephone Rd reopen hours after fatal accident

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Authorities have reopened I-610 South Loop at Telephone Road after a fatal accident involving a child forced crews to shut it down.

The wreck happened around 2pm on the westbound lanes of I-610 South Loop at Telephone Road.

Authorities had shut down all main lanes and the entrance ramp to the highway and expected the closure to last through rush hour as they tended to the scene.

But crews managed to get it cleared sooner and the higwhay was reopened shortly before 5:30pm.

SkyEye HD aerials show an overturned vehicle on the highway. We're told a little girl around the age of 3 was ejected from the vehicle and died, but no details were immediately available about the wreck.

Texans fans swarm stores to grab up 'AFC South Division Champions' gear

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Fans aren't wasting any time updating their Houston Texans wardrobe to reflect the AFC South Division Championship the team clinched Sunday.

Fans started lining up at an Academy store on Kirby just minutes after the game ended, and the store was ready with a table full of T-shirts reading "AFC South Division Champions."

One woman says she even left her godson's college graduation to make sure she got a shirt.

"My husband is texting me, 'Please go get me a shirt from Academy,'" she said. "So I had to leave the graduation and come and get him a shirt because he is the Texans' number one fan."

The shirts are in gray and white and are available for men, women and children. If you don't want to wait in line, they are also on sale online.

Fans across the area were celebrating the Texans' victory Sunday night. Those we spoke to were dreaming of what the future could have in store, but were also realistic about the challenges that lie ahead for the team.

"Beat the next teams and go to the playoffs," fan Randy Grimaldo said when we asked what is next for the Texans. "We have the division. I'm ready for the Super Bowl."

"A little disappointed our offense scored one touchdown," fan Jimmy Kilduff said. "Special teams scored one then five field goals. That's not championship football but we'll get it together."

And at the Texans Grille, you never know who you might run into. Player Johnathan Joseph was there Sunday night, surrounded by his friends and family post-victory.

"Obviously, I have friends and family in town -- my family and my wife's side," Joseph said. "It's great to have that support from them as well as the fans in the city."

House fire on south side called suspicious

See it on TV? Check here.   HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Arson investigators are trying to figure out what sparked another fire at a home in the city's south side overnight.

It happened around 2am at a home on Griggs near Tierwester.

Firefighters say flames were shooting from the side of the home when they arrived. They put the fire out and no one was hurt.

Investigators say it's suspicious since the home didn't have electricity, and the fire looks to have started outside the home.

Smoke detector saves woman from fire on Houston's south side

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A smoke detector is credited with saving a woman's life when her house caught fire on Houston's south side Thursday morning. That small device is now the subject of a city-wide campaign to encourage Houstonians to protect themselves.

We hear a lot of stories about fire deaths, and in many of them, the absence of a smoke detector was a factor. On Thursday, the other side of the story -- a fire in which the person in the burning house credits the alarm with her survival.

Charmaine Depuy-Watson is picking up the pieces of her life and her home. At 1am Thursday, smoke filled the house where three generations of her family once lived. She was awakened by an alarm.

"The smoke detectors woke me up. I got my dog out. I don't know where kitty is," said Depuy-Watson.

It is the second house fire in the past week in which smoke detectors have saved lives. Last Friday near Texas Southern University, a family of six, though injured, lived through a house fire. The owner was also wakened by the high-pitched beeps and able to call for help.

Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams is asking that homes near Thursday morning's fire be canvassed by the fire department and free smoke detectors offered to those who don't already have them.

"It's something we can give to them free with batteries, we're going to do that because we don't want this to happen to anyone because this is a tragedy for any family," said Council Member Adams.

The Houston Fire Department has long supplied detectors to low-income residents and it's now going beyond the smoke alarms.

"We have carbon monoxide detectors which are for older houses that heat with gas, but it all serves the same purpose and that's to save lives," said Captain Ruy Lozano with HFD.

The fire department is supplementing what the city can provide with public and private grants; to the point that last year 4,000 free smoke detectors were distributed. That's up about 25 percent from the year before. And then there's the public service campaign with billboards that read: "A $5.00 smoke detector saved my life." It's drawing attention.

"We got a lot of calls and through the website requesting smoke detectors once the billboards went up," said Laura Hunter with HFD Fire prevention.

A smoke detector will not prevent the loss of a home or of family treasures -- Charmaine Depuy-Watson will tell you that. But what that five dollar device allows her to do is to be alive and tell her story.

"I wouldn't have known because there's smoke before the fire so it's imperative to have smoke detectors," said Depuy-Watson.

An overloaded electrical outlet is said to be the cause of Thursday morning's house fire.

Elderly man beaten in South Houston home invasion

Police in South Houston need your help to track down a suspect in a violent home invasion. These are stills from when police say the suspect was in a mobile phone store prior to the home invasion. Police in South Houston need your help to track down a suspect in a violent home invasion. These are stills from when police say the suspect was in a mobile phone store prior to the home invasion.

SOUTH HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) -- Police in South Houston need your help to find a suspect in a violent home invasion.

On Monday, shortly after noon, a woman called South Houston Police to report that her husband was found badly beaten inside the couple's home in the 1100 block of Iowa.

The woman said her 79-year-old husband was lying in a pool of blood when she returned home, and appeared to have been beaten in the face, mouth and head. He was transported to Hermann Hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe the person responsible had entered the home through a back patio door and encountered the resident. Police say the suspect beat the victim before ransacking a room, getting away with several weapons and the victim's car keys. The suspect then took off in the victim's pickup truck.

An investigation led police to believe the suspect in the home invasion was the same person captured earlier in the day on surveillance video at a T-Mobile store along the Gulf Freeway and College Avenue in Houston. They say police were called after the suspect caused a disturbance there.

Police say the suspect left the store and stole a bicycle nearby. That bicycle was the same one found in the driveway of the home invasion suspect. A neighbor of the home invasion suspect also tells police she recognized the suspect in the photos as someone who tried to get into her house before moving on to the victim's.

The suspect is described as a black male with a slim build, wearing a red t-shirt, blue jeans, white and silver belt. The victim's pickup has not been recovered. The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

If you have information in this case, you're asked to call South Houston police at 713-944-1910.
