PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Charges have been filed against the driver of a sports car that hit a Pasadena home over the weekend, killing his passenger inside. Engin Calbas, 40, of Bacliff has been charged with intoxication manslaughter following the wreck Saturday that killed passenger Tina Montana. According to court documents, a Pasadena police officer noticed the Corvette Calbas was driving traveling at a high rate of speed near the 4900 block of E. NASA Road 1. The officer says he started to pursue, but within seconds, he says Calbas crashed into a home, killing Montana.
The officer says when he made the scene, he noticed Calbas had bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath. Court documents show Calbas told the officer he had had two beers before driving.
Calbas was transported to Southeast Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a broken back suffered in the accident. Court documents say a blood sample taken at the hospital showed Calbas' blood alcohol level was .122, which is above the legal limit of .08.
Calbas' bail has been set at $60,000.
