Harris Co. Sheriff's Office celebrating 175th anniversary with photo exhibit

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Harris County Sheriff's Office is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year and you can take a look back at the history of the agency.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia Monday helped open a photo exhibit at the Houston Public Library Central Branch in downtown Houston. The exhibit includes photos of former Harris County sheriffs and the early years of the office.

One guest who enjoyed the exhibit is Deputy Douglas Hudson, who is serving in his 48th year with HCSO.

"The sheriff's department has come a long way. The history and the management of the department has come, the technology has grown, and trying to keep the streets safer for the citizens of Harris County," Dep. Hudson said.

The free photo exhibit will be on display through the middle of July.

Veterans exhibit in Sugar Land for Memorial Day weekend

  SUGAR LAND, TX (KTRK) -- The Wall That Heals traveling exhibit will be in Sugar Land for the Memorial Day weekend.

The exhibit was to be brought into Sugar Land on Tuesday. A replica of Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, it has traveled to more than 300 cities across the country. Organized by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, an organization charged with preserving The Wall, the exhibit also includes an education area with pictures and military artifacts.

The display of the traveling exhibition at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd. from May 24 to 28, from 8am to 8pm, is planned to coincide with Memorial Day weekend and the city's Memorial Day ceremony.

Helmut Newton exhibit set to open Sunday at MFAH

AP  HOUSTON -- An exhibit of works by fashion photographer Helmut Newton is set to open this weekend in Houston.

The exhibit opening Sunday at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston includes all of the photographs from his first three books. More than 200 photographs from the books will be on display through Sept. 25.

The museum said in a news release that "Helmut Newton: White Women, Sleepless Nights, Big Nudes" is the first large-scale U.S. exhibition of Newton's work. The exhibit takes its name from the titles of the first three books.

Helmut Newton, whose work appeared in magazines including Playboy, Elle and Vogue, is best known for his stark, black-and-white nude photos of women. He died at the age of 83 in 2004 after a car crash in Los Angeles.
