Police searching for missing 31-year-old mom

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police are investigating the disappearance of a 31-year-old woman who was last seen in southwest Houston last week.

Michelle Warner was last seen around midnight at the Regency Square Apartment Complex in the 7200 block of Bellerive Drive in the Sharpstown area.

Relatives say they last heard from her this past weekend, and it's not like Warner, the mother of a three-year-old, to disappear like this.

They say Warner had a fight with the father of her son before she vanished.

Houston police have her family's missing person report and are investigating.

Warner is 5-foot-6, weighs around 125 pounds and has blue eyes and dark brown hair. She has a dolphin tattoo on the backside of her shoulder and small butterfly tattoo on one foot. She also has small stud nose ring on right side of nose.

Police searching for Kingwood home intruder

Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are on the hunt for an intruder in Kingwood after a man broke into a woman's home in the early morning hours while she was inside asleep.

It happened in a subdivision off of Kingwood Drive near the Eastex Freeway.

That woman says she hasn't slept since this happened. We promised not to identify her or her home because she is scared this intruder will come back.

According to police, somebody entered her home around 5:40am Thursday. The mother told me she was just waking up when she heard somebody in the bathroom. She thought it was one of her kids getting ready for school but it turns out, somebody had come in through her bathroom window.

"I just said, Who is in the bathroom?' thinking it was going to be one of my kids. Then a male voice answered and said, 'Shut up. I have a gun and I'll use it,' and then I didn't say anything else," the victim said. "My kids were in the house. I went to see if they were OK. It was just terrifying."

She called 911, but by the time police got there, he was gone, and the screen window was propped against the side of the house. She never even saw the man. She says he got away with a box of jewelry that was in the bathroom.

Police are now looking for him. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

Detectives searching for Montgomery Co. sex assault suspect

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives are searching for an armed man who went into a West Montgomery County family's backyard and sexually assaulted a child.

Such crimes don't typically happen at High Meadow Ranch near Magnolia. On a typical night, it's quiet and dark; in fact, not many cars pass through the area and that's why what happened there on Sunday is getting people's attention.

With sprawling homes and idyllic scenery, High Meadow Ranch is the ultimate in country living. Woods and wildlife make this golf club community picture perfect. Montgomery County Sheriff's Office officials now want residents to focus on one picture.

"It is a very good sketch," resident Stephanie Dolen said.

Authorities say on Sunday, the victim was in the backyard when the man approached with a gun, grabbed and then sexually assaulted the child before running away into the woods.

"The community, you wouldn't think," Dolen said.

Residents say it is far from typical for High Meadow Ranch, a reminder that crime can happen anywhere.

"A lot of people who live there saying they are trying to keep up with their kids," Dolen said.

At a nearby practice for Magnolia Lacrosse, many moms were just learning of the attack, and for Karen Wilkinson, it hits close to home.

"Our property borders those woods and my children use the property for recreational purposes. My kids are there fishing and paint balling and those kinds of things and I want them to be aware that they need to just be cautious," Wilkinson said.

Sheriff's officials wouldn't give us the age or gender of the victim, and they wouldn't elaborate on the extent of the assault.

The suspect was described as a white man who appeared to be sunburned and has blue eyes and black eyebrows. He was wearing black pants, black shoes and a black pullover hoodie.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect's identity is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Detective Division at 936-760-5876 or Crime Stoppers at 800-392-STOP (7867).

Searching for Bigfoot in Texas

Bigfoot Sasquatch A black and white print is pictured from a color movie Frank White says he took in the forest near Bellingham, Wash. on Oct. 8, 1977. "I'd call it a North American ape," says White. "You can call it a Sasquatch or anything you like." (AP Photo) (AP Photo)

AP  HOUSTON -- Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Skunk Ape. Yowie. Yeti. Abominable Snowman. In Texas you may have heard of the Caddo Creature, the Lake Worth Monster/Goat-Man or the Liberty County Monkey Man.

There are many names for the hairy humanlike creature that walks on two legs and has eluded searchers for decades. Even Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot series has been unable to find the ape-man typically described as being 6 to 8 feet tall, with a massive, bulky build.

The Finding Bigfoot crew has not visited Texas yet, but something is out there deep in the Big Thicket, say members of Texas groups dedicated to hunting the beast.

Ken Gerhard of the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization has never seen one, but he thinks technology will help solve the mystery.

"I have been immersed in Sasquatch research for a number of years, and I can tell you in my mind a mountain of evidence supports the existence of these creatures," Gerhard said. When hunting season ends, he will return to the woods to look for tracks, hair and habitations and to listen for vocalizations at night.

There have been sightings along the Trinity River corridor, and a cast of a suspected Bigfoot track was made in Sam Houston National Forest, said Gerhard, a San Antonio cryptozoologist who co-wrote Monsters of Texas (CFZ, $16.99) with Nick Redfern.

Texas is in the top 10 states for Bigfoot sightings, Gerhard said, outranked only by Washington, California, Oregon, Ohio and Florida.

"Eventually someone is going to come up with some evidence, although it is very frustrating that we have not found a body yet," he said. "And it is a very good argument against Bigfoot's existence."

Exactly, said Mike Cox, a spokesman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which discounts the idea of Bigfoot running around the woods. Someone would have found some verifiable piece of evidence by now, TPWD biologists contend.

"The theory is that with as much traffic as there is in East Texas that sooner or later a Bigfoot would not stop, look and listen and make the mistake of walking out into traffic and become the victim of a hit-and-run," Cox said. Or a hunter would mistakenly shoot one.

Texas has 180 known mammals ranging from bats to white tail deer, Cox said. Bigfoot is lumped with the cryptids, legendary creatures.

Bigfoot makes TPWD's top 3 cryptid list. The department gets more calls about chupacabra, which biologists think are mangy coyotes, Cox said. Bigfoot, which they call pure folklore, ranks No. 2. Then there are sightings of lechuzas, usually along the border and generally thought to be swooping owls in the night sky, not swooping witches.

As a student of Texas history and mythology and a hunter, Cox appreciates the intrigue of the Bigfoot story.

"I've been out in some pretty desolate places in the pursuit of game, so it has crossed my mind: What would I do if I was sitting up in a deer blind and .waiting to see a big buck come out of the brush and instead I saw another creature come out. But it hasn't happened yet to me," he said. "It's fun to imagine what might be there."

Biological sciences professor Jeffrey Meldrum of Idaho State University is convinced Sasquatch is not a myth.

Meldrum, who dislikes the tabloid connotations of the name Bigfoot, studies primate comparative anatomy, especially footprint evidence. From tracks he has analyzed, Meldrum leans toward the hypothesis that Sasquatch is a species of large ape. Yet the creature does not exhibit evidence of material culture or use of tools, fire or home bases.

The author of Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science (Forge Books, $16.99) says the popularity of the Finding Bigfoot TV series makes researchers more skeptical of Bigfoot reports.

"You have to be careful. I have been out with people for whom every overturned rock, every bent twig, every bump in the night is attributed to Bigfoot," he said.

Vaughn M. Bryant, professor of anthropology at Texas A&M University, became involved in Bigfoot research in the early 1970s at Washington State University, an area where Bigfoot is a tourist attraction.

Although he is open to possibilities, Bryant says he can't be a Bigfoot believer without physical evidence. "Photos and footprints are not enough. They can and have been faked fairly effectively," Bryant said.

His specialty is paleo nutrition and the study of coprolites, or fossilized feces.

"Quite frankly, I have tried to get out of the Bigfoot-poop business because it is very time consuming and didn't really lead anywhere productive," Bryant said. At A&M he is studying excrement found in the Paisley Caves of Oregon that is 12,000 years or older.

Plus, he noted, most universities don't encourage their professors to publicly ponder Sasquatch.

"If you are in academia, if you start talking about Bigfoot, people start to wonder: Has this guy lost his mind or what?" Bryant said.

Lyle Blackburn, a member of the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy, has heard snickers when he is asked: "Do you believe in Bigfoot?"

It is a question that provokes the author of the upcoming The Beast of Boggy Creek: True Story of the Fouke Monster "Belief implies some sort of faith. Either the animal exists or it doesn't. There's no faith to it," Blackburn said.

The Bedford resident described Bigfoot as one of the larger mysteries of the world. "The point is, I like camping and I like hunting and I like mysteries, and it sort of combines all that," he said.

"It's not about the end goal always. It's about meeting people, having fun and hearing some really cool stories. So if you look at it that way, it's an interesting subject, and if turns out to be true, all the better."

HPD searching for driver who fatally struck pedestrian

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating what is being called Houston's first death of the year.

Investigators are looking for a driver who left the scene of a deadly pedestrian accident in southwest Houston.

It was less than two hours into the new year when Houston police say a 32-year-old man was walking along the side of Stancliff near Shelton and witnesses saw a black Cadillac Escalade drive up and slam into him.

"They stopped and I guess once they saw a body they ended up fleeing the scene," Sgt. D. Thomas with the Houston Police Department said.

The victim died at the scene.

"I feel pretty sad for the person that did get hit," said Eugene Kettlewell, who lives nearby. "It's even sadder that somebody didn't stop."

Neighbors say Stancliff is heavily traveled and pedestrians are often seen walking -- some on sidewalks and others on the roadway itself.

"They drive too fast up and down this street here," neighbor Shirley Andrews said.

As police search for the suspect accused of killing the victim with his SUV, neighbors say this will now be a somber scene knowing the city's first death of 2012 happened so close to home.

"I would hope they would find whoever did it so they can at least figure out why they didn't stop," Andrews said.

Police are still looking for that black Cadillac Escalade, which likely has damage to the right front end. Anyone with information on that vehicle is asked to call HPD or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives are searching for an armed man who robbed a north Harris County grocery store earlier this month.

Authorities searching for alleged home burglar

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force is hunting for a burglar. He broke into the home of a family who, just last year, lost a father and husband to another violent crime.

It was last Friday in the middle of the day when neighbors told deputies they saw two guys broke into the family's home in the White Oak Springs subdivision, and once again the family became crime victims.

"They actually kicked it open," burglary victim Amber Kahn said. "It was just a huge mess."

For anyone else, this would be just a typical break-in -- door kicked in, locks broken, property gone.

But the burglary that happened at Amber Kahn's house last week hits a lot harder.

"It don't make any sense, why us?," said her brother, Saad Kahn.

Their father and Durdana Kahn's husband, Saib Kahn, was murdered a little more than a year ago at his business, which wasn't yet open. Robbery was the motive, said Houston police. The minute it clicked that they were victims once again, any sense of normalcy they had achieved was gone.

"Day by day we live in pain and it's just not easy for us, so after this we felt even more insecure," Amber Kahn said.

Observant neighbors caught a license plate on the thieves car and a fingerprint left behind has led investigators to identify 19-year-old Lamont Presley. The Harris County Sheriff's Office has made finding him a priority.

Amber Kahn says others in the county's South Asian community have also felt targeted.

"People assume that we have more gold, like jewelry and stuff, due to our nationality and so we feel like we're more of a target," she said.

And because of what happened to her father, more so. Finding Presley she says would help.

"We just want this guy caught before he can cause any damage -- any emotional or even physical damage -- to any other family," she said.

Since the murder last year, the family has lost their business, and the son has had to step in to support all of them. A man has been charged with capital murder.

As for this burglary, if you have any information on Presley, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477. You could be eligible for a reward.

Presley has four previous burglary charges.

Detectives searching for alleged abductor

Ralph Wayne Weber is wanted on a charge of aggravated kidnapping. He is accused of abducting and binding a woman as she walked past a wooded area in northeast Harris County. Ralph Wayne Weber is wanted on a charge of aggravated kidnapping. He is accused of abducting and binding a woman as she walked past a wooded area in northeast Harris County.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives are searching for a 48-year-old man accused of abducting a woman as she was walking by a wooded area in northeast Harris County.

Ralph Wayne Weber is wanted on a charge of aggravated kidnapping, according to a Harris County probable cause document. He is accused of abducting a woman at gunpoint on May 29. Detectives say the victim was walking along the 2500 block of Highland Shores when Weber stepped out of the woods and pointed a black semi-automatic gun at her and said you need to come with me. Weber escorted the woman toward the back of the woods and pushed her down on her knees. He then struck her in the back of the head with the gun, causing her to pass out. The victim said she regained consciousness and found wire wrapped around her neck and feet and when the suspect noticed she had come to, she says he tightened the wire around her neck until she passed out again. According to court documents, the woman later was discovered by her brother, who went searching for her after she'd been gone for an hour. He told detectives he found her in the wooded area tied up in wire and wearing nothing but her shorts. The victim was taken to an area hospital where records show she had suffered bruises on the back of her head, neck and feet that were consistent with what she remembered happened. Detectives say a Crime Stoppers tip later led them to the identification of Weber. The victim was then able to pick him out of a photo lineup as the man who allegedly attacked her.
