Suspect charged in fatal shooting of innocent bystander outside nightclub

Henry Dorsey Police say they received several tips identifying a man in braids in surveillance pictures as 19-year-old Henry Dorsey. He's now charged in the fatal shooting.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A suspect has been charged with murder for a shooting that killed an innocent bystander.

Police say they received several tips identifying a man in braids in surveillance pictures as 19-year-old Henry Dorsey. He is not in custody yet.

According to court documents, Dorsey opened fire during a fight with the bouncers at Club Le Cave in northwest Harris County on Sunday. Timothy Powell, who was not involved in the fight, was killed.

Dorsey has previous convictions for evading police and assault

Investigators are urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of Dorsey to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Harris County has filed a nuisance lawsuit against Club Le Cave. According to the lawsuit, the shooting is just the latest in more than 60 crimes that have occurred at the club since April of last year. Those crimes include assault, robbery and drug possession.

The suit alleges the club's owner, Victoria Gonzalez, has done nothing to stop the activity.

The county wants a judge to require the club to pay bond and stop allowing nuisance activities. If the club violates its bond, it could be shut down.

Salvation Army red kettle stolen outside Deerbrook Mall

HUMBLE, TX (KTRK) -- The search is on for a brazen thief who took off with a Salvation Army red kettle. The crime happened outside a mall in Humble. As investigators try to close in on the suspect, the Salvation Army is working hard to prove the thief can't steal any holiday cheer.

Every holiday season for the past five years, Larry Arnold has been ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

"It's a fun activity," he said. "I like to help people out."

He's only had a positive experience at his post outside Dillard's. But last week, on a day he wasn't working, someone stole the red kettle with about $200 inside.

"Last week, they pulled one of the guys, when I was off, they brought him to one of the stores and they told him one of the kettles was snatched," Arnold recalled.

While stealing red kettles isn't unheard of, the Houston area Salvation Army told us it decided to take the bell ringer working at that time off the job, though the organization would only say it did so out of an abundance of caution.

Salvation Army area direction Major Chris Flanagan said, "There was no foul play. When we do any of that, we talk to the person who was manning the kettle. We try to get the details of how this came about."

Mumble Police Detective David Scott was just assigned this case, so he has no leads, and only a vague description of the suspect.

"The description given was a black male in his 20's with a long goatee, and wearing a black hoodie," Det. Scott said. "The vehicle was described as a tan Chevy Malibu."

So while the Salvation Army waits and the police investigates, for the people who do try to fill the kettles with holiday cheer, this is not a holiday message they wanted to see.

Donor Jo Hanson said, "I try to think maybe they really, really needed it, but it doesn't cut it anymore. No, they're just selfish."

The bell ringer who was working when the theft allegedly happened is no longer working with the Salvation Army, although the organization would only say it is them being extra cautious while the investigation continues.

Officer shoots 'suspicious' man outside SWAT scene

STAFFORD, TX (KTRK) -- A SWAT situation in Stafford this morning ended with an officer shooting a man who drove by the scene.

According to Stafford police, officers responded to a report of shots fired on Southmeadow near Mulholland.

When police arrived, the residents reportedly refused to come out of the house.

A SWAT team was called out. When they got to the scene, the residents came outside and surrendered to police.

Police said a driver then pulled up to the scene in an SUV and asked what was happening, at which point he begins to act suspiciously.

Officers confronted the man and asked him to exit the vehicle, but he refused, police said.

That's when an officer reached her left arm into the vehicle. The suspect allegedly rolled the window up on her arm and tried to drive away.

Police said the officer was in fear for her life. She discharged her weapon into the SUV, shattering the driver's side window and hitting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, police said.

The officer who fired her weapon and another officer were both taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

HCSO: Security guard shoots 4 outside night club

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- One man was killed and three others were wounded when deputies say a security guard opened fire outside an after-hours club early Sunday.

It happened around 6am at the Bronco Nite Club on Veterans Memorial near West Road in northwest Harris County.

Dozens of club patrons witnessed the shooting.

"The guy died in the parking lot because the security guard shot him," witness Brenda Romero said. "He shot him because he was drunk and he got into a confrontation with the security guard. The security guard came back and shot; that's it."

Witnesses said multiple shots were fired.

"I almost got shot," witness Lina Deleon said. "I had to run to the back."

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the security guard was in the process of escorting several people out of the club at closing time when a fight started.

Detectives said the guard shot all four victims when they all assaulted him at once. One man died at the scene. Three others were taken to area hospitals. Officials said one had serious injuries and the other two were minor.

"The security guard: he has been assaulted; he has physical injuries, trauma injuries, not a gunshot wound," HCSO Sgt. Ben Beall said.

Romero told us she comes to the club often but has never witnessed things get this out of control. She said the deceased victim -- a man who appeared to be in his 20s -- was shot in the chest.

She tried to help him, but he died in her arms.

"I really don't know him," Romero said. "I was just trying to tell him to stay up with me to help him out."

Investigators spent the morning questioning club patrons. They are now looking into whether the club was able to sell alcohol.

According to investigators, the area is no stranger to problems. Officials say they have received 12 calls for service in the last two months at the strip center where Bronco is located. The owner of the club reportedly locked up the bar and left the scene after the shooting happened.

Detectives said they will complete their investigation at the scene and send evidence and witness statements to the district attorney's office, where it will be decided whether the security guard will be charged.

Newborn found in plastic container outside Pasadena medical facility

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A newborn is now in the custody of CPS officials after he was found in a plastic container outside of a Pasadena medical facility.

A worker discovered the baby outside the Bayside Urgent Care Center on Preston near Fairmont Saturday night.

Police say the baby was only hours old when he was found. Noah Smith, the worker who found him, tells us it was a shocking sight.

"He was definitely a newborn, basically the eyes hadn't been able to focus on anything yet. He was very clean, it looked like someone had taken care before dropping him off," Smith said.

So far, none of the baby's family members have come forward to claim the child.

The Texas Safe Haven Law allows a parent to give up the custody of their child up to 60 days old at any hospital, medical service provider or child welfare agency but the parent must leave the child with an on-duty employee.

Three killed, two others injured during shooting outside night club

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Three people are dead and two more injured after a shooting early Wednesday morning. Hundreds had gathered outside the Scores Cabaret in southwest Houston after a Juneteenth rap concert, and that's when someone opened fire.

That shooting happened right in the parking lot just a few steps away from the door. Police say the chaos had hundreds of people running for cover.

Outside Club Blue on Westpark, balloons are now a reminder of the five people who were shot in the parking lot early Wednesday morning.

Two women say their uncle, who's popularly known as "Dinky," is among the three victims who died.

Quitta said, "Just sad, and heartache and pain."

Police say the shooting happened shortly after a concert featuring Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth wrapped up. That concert was billed as part of a Juneteenth celebration at a strip club next door. Witnesses say the suspects fired between 20 and 40 rounds.

Ashley, a friend of one of the victims, said, "It was just heartbreaking, you know. I couldn't believe it."

Ashley, who didn't want to show her face or give her last name, told me her best friend Erica Dodson was also killed outside the club. Police say the single mother of three was an innocent victim who was just walking to her car.

"She was like an everyday person, I seen her every day," Ashley said. Just to hear the fact that, you know, that she's gone, it's really, really heartbroken."

Investigators say it's possible the Westpark shooting is gang-related. They say it could be connected to a domestic issue involving one of the male victims who received death threats recently. Now Ashley is asking why.

"Just by her walking from the store, going to the car, she's hit. She's dead," she said.

Trae Tha Truth's publicist tells Eyewitness News the musician suffered minor injuries from a bullet wound to the shoulder. A photo of Trae in his hospital gown was tweeted just before he was discharged from the hospital. Police are also calling him an innocent victim.

Police have not officially released the names of the victims. The big problem right now is that they say they need the community's help with leads on the suspects. They are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Thieves break into cars outside gun store

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- While customers were inside a Katy gun shop, they were the target of thieves outside of it -- and it was all caught on camera.

The store says the thieves were looking for guns Friday. But instead of buying them, they broke into cars parked outside of Tactical Firearms on South Mason Road. They may have thought they made a clean getaway, but now authorities have evidence that could help catch the criminals.

"So you've got the lookout vehicle pulling into the parking lot right now," Tactical Firearms owner Jeremy Alcede said, as surveillance video showing the parking lot rolls.

And not too far behind was a silver Nissan Altima with a suspected car burglar inside. The Ford Edge backs into a spot, allowing him to be on the lookout. The Altima starts scoping cars to burglarize.

First is a Ford pickup, but when he gets out and peeps through the window, there's nothing to steal. Eventually, a Toyota truck is broken into. Two guns are stolen from the back seat.

And the suspect is not done. He also shatters the window of a Suburban, stealing a briefcase.

Alcede says gun stores are under fire.

"I called AJC, since they are right down the road, advised them. That's when they told us that they were broken into already. And so we since then notified all the other gun stores to keep an eye out for these vehicles," Alcede said.

And they can also keep an eye out for the man in the white Ford Edge. He served as lookout. He actually walked inside, asked a question and left with a brochure. His polo hat and shirt are plain as day.

Alcede says gun stores seem like easy lifting for thieves.

"It's a target-rich environment. You know, if you come to a gun store, you're either coming to shoot or buy a gun," he said.

Now he's hoping someone recognizes the Ford Edge with Florida plates 702-LAI and the Altima with a Texas-style license plates.

As for the thieves, Alcede wouldn't advise them to return.

"If they come back it's going to end up differently," he said.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is now on the lookout for the truck. And of course investigators would love to know who this man is our guy in the lookout vehicle who had to walk in the store.

Activists arrested outside DA's office

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Local activist groups angry about the not guilty verdict of a former Houston police officer had a private meeting with the Harris County District Attorney this morning, but not everyone was happy about that.

The district attorney agreed to meet with some community leaders after hundreds showed up Thursday afternoon protesting that verdict for Andrew Blomberg. Things took a dramatic turn when some of the rally's organizers weren't allowed in that meeting.

"Come on let's go to jail. Come on please let's go," deputies said.

They're calling this arrest an act of civil disobedience.

"We're not resisting arrest," a demonstrator said. "We are not resisting arrest! Ouch!"

Three community activists blocked District Attorney Pat Lykos's lobby for nearly four hours, hoping to make a point about the not guilty verdict a jury gave former HPD Officer Andrew Blomberg this week.

Community activist Krystal Muhammad said, "She can come out and let us in. They can come out and let us in."

The protesters were hoping to be part of a meeting between the DA and several ministers discussing the criminal justice process after outrage broke out over the verdict exonerating Blomberg in the videotaped kicking and beating of Chad Holley. Holley, who was 15 years old at the time, was arrested for a burglary he was later convicted of.

Demonstrators chanted, "No justice, no peace!" No Justice, no peace!"

But tensions in the lobby escalated when members of the National Black United Front, New Black Panther Party and Occupy Houston showed up a few minutes late and weren't allowed to participate in the last 45 minutes of that hour-long meeting.

As the group took positions on the lobby floor, the district attorney appeared from another door.

"I'm asking you to leave now," Lykos said. "If you are sincere, schedule the meeting. Please leave."

At the same time several deputies gave the three protesters three warnings to leave.

"We will not be intimidated," Lykos said. "We will not be harassed. And we will not permit you to obstruct our office."

As the group ignored those warnings, they were each arrested for criminal trespassing.

Those arrested community activists are facing misdemeanor charges.

Pat Lykos issued the following statement: "As District Attorney, it is my duty to pursue justice under the law. The people must have trust and confidence in the legal system. My record clearly reflects that I listen to the people and have made remarkable improvements to the criminal justice system.

The ministers scheduled a meeting with me today. We met to discuss the law and the criminal justice process.

Later this morning, a group obstructed the lobby of the District Attorney's Office. Profane language was directed against the employees of this office. They were disruptive and impeded our work.

Should anyone wish to meet with me, there is an appropriate manner in which to schedule it. I expect people to treat the dedicated professionals in my office with respect.

I will not permit any group to occupy our office. I will not allow the administration of justice to be held hostage. I will not capitulate to threats.

I swore to uphold the Constitution, the laws of the United States and of the sovereign state of Texas. I live by that vow. The DA's Office is both sword and shield to defend and protect the people of Harris County. Justice and order are inextricably intertwined."

Blomberg is one of four officers charged in the 2010 beating case of burglary suspect Chad Holley. Blomberg had been accused of official oppressio. The beating took place in March of 2010 after the then 15-year-old Holley broke into a home and ran from police.

Surveillance video shows what happened when police caught up with him.

Several officers were reprimanded for the incident. Four officers were fired and charged in the case. Blomberg was the first to go to trial.

Four shot, one killed outside Jefferson County Courthouse

See it on TV? Check here.  BEAUMONT, TX (KTRK) -- A Houston man at court with family members opened fire outside a southeast Texas courthouse Wednesday, killing one person and wounding at least three others before briefly taking hostages at a nearby business, police said.

The 41-year-old gunman had been inside the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont but went out to his pickup truck shortly after 11am, drew a weapon and began shooting, police said. He has been identified as Bartholomew Granger, from Houston.

A detective outside the courthouse fired back. He quickly was joined by law enforcement officers from nearby buildings, police said.

Officials say Granger retreated to his truck and, still firing, ran over his 20-year-old daughter, who had also been shot. He drove about three blocks and abandoned his truck in the middle of the street before entering a nearby construction business, police said.

Granger was taken into custody by Beaumont police SWAT officers at noon.

Authorities say Granger was on trial at the Criminal District Court for aggravated sexual assault. Two of the shooting victims, including his daughter, were witnesses in the case.

The trial began yesterday. Granger's daughter had already testified, and was scheduled for rebuttal testimony today.

Minnie Ray Seabolt, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene, in front of the courthouse main entrance. She was from Deweyville, Texas.

With hostages inside, the gunman spoke by phone to police and told them he was wounded. He eventually surrendered and was taken to an area hospital.

Granger was treated and released. He is currently in the Jefferson County Jail, charged with one count of murder. His bond on the aggravated sexual assault charge was revoked.

"It was crazy," Beaumont Police Chief Jimmy Singletary said. "He was shooting. Our guys were shooting. It was a classic shootout."

A pickup truck riddled with at least a dozen bullet holes remained in the middle of the street Wednesday afternoon.

James Gibson, one of the owners of Richard Construction, said about 50 to 60 employees were inside when the gunman entered. An assault rifle believed to belong to the gunman remained in the building, Gibson said.

Authorities declined to identify the type of weapon the gunman used.

"It was pandemonium," Judge Larry Gist, whose office is across the street from the main courthouse building, said as he described how law enforcement flooded the scene as soon as the shots rang out.

Ricky Gandy said he went to the window of his office at LJA Engineering, which overlooks the parking lot next to the Beaumont Police department, after hearing a "pop, pop, pop."

He saw police shooting at a pickup truck as it came out of the parking lot, but the driver "never really got in a hurry."

"Once it started, it was kind of like the Fourth of July," Gandy added. "Several shots, I imagine, I'm guessing at least 30 shots all together."

At last check, Granger's 20-year-old daughter was in critical condition. Her mother and another shooting victim were treated at area hospitals and released.

Seven Beaumont police officers and two Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies who engaged Granger with gunfire are currently on administrative leave. They were not injured.

Moments after a news conference about the shooting, Jefferson County deputies arrested Lyndon Granger, the brother of the alleged Jefferson County Courthouse shooter, on an old charge of sexual assault. Authorities say he is accused of sexually assaulting the same girl as Bartholomew Granger. He was out on bond but a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. It's not known exactly why the judge made that move, but sources tell us it is in part to protect the public going forward.

Congressman Ted Poe issued the following statement:
"I am deeply saddened by the shooting in Beaumont today. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and the loved ones of the innocent bystanders who lost their lives, and I am praying for a speedy recovery for those who are wounded. As for the shooter, I hope that justice is swift and punishment is harsh."

Beaumont is about 80 miles east of Houston.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Man's body found outside north Houston business

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Investigators are looking for answers after a local transmission shop owner was found dead outside of his business Saturday morning.

The body was found outside of Charlie's Certified Transmission in the 7000 block of N. Shepherd Drive between Rittenhouse Road and Granville Drive, just south of West Little York.

According to homicide investigators, the man has been identified as 50-year-old Roy Scott of Houston, the owner of the transmission shop.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding Scott's death. Police say he was shot once. There are no suspects and no witnesses have come forward.

Scott's family and neighbors just want to know why it happened.

As word spread of Scott's violent death, neighbors and friends rushed to his north Houston transmission shop to see what happened. No reactions were as gut-wrenching as those of his wife and teenage daughter.

"She's crying. She's devastated right now. Everyone is," said Vanessa Portillo, Scott's daughter's friend.

According to the Houston Police Department, someone who works at a nearby business walked by between 8 and 8:30am and saw Scott's body in a pool of blood. That person dialed 9-1-1, but Scott was already dead.

"It appears he'd been there for several hours," HPD Homicide Sgt. C.D. Howard said.

Investigators are canvassing the area and trying to retrace the shop owner's steps to pinpoint exactly when Scott arrived, and whether he was scheduled to meet anyone.

Neighbor Ruth Portillo says she was one of the last to see him alive. She spotted him on their street at 12:30am.

"My husband and I said 'hi' to him and then he left again," she said.

Neighbors say Scott loved building race cars. Is it possible he came here to work on one? His family may never know.

According to police, Scott's shop was closed and locked up. His cell phone and wallet were still on him when authorities searched his body.

Investigators may be looking for Scott's white Ford pickup truck. They're not sure if he let someone borrow it for a job or if it was stolen as part of this incident.

His wife told us he installed surveillance cameras after recent robberies, but police don't believe the cameras were rolling overnight.

So, who would want to hurt Scott?

"I don't know," neighbor Dale Singletary said. "All of their family and him, they're really nice people. Real good people."

There are still no arrests in this case and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call HPD or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. All tipsters remain anonymous.
