Conroe PD investigating drive-by shooting that injured 4

CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- Conroe police are investigating a drive-by shooting that injured four people this morning.

It happened around 1am in the 1200 block of Pleasant Drive. Officers were called to an aggravated assault in progress. When police arrived, they found four individuals had been shot.

Investigators said witness information indicates that two groups, possibly opposing gang members, had an argument earlier in the evening and one group left the area. A short time later, police said several members returned and fired multiple rounds into a crowd of people in a drive-by.

The vehicle turned around and additional rounds were shot into the crowd as the vehicle left the area, officials said.

Conroe police located the suspect vehicle a short time later and took the sole occupant into custody. A handgun was also confiscated.

Three of the four victims were treated and released. The fourth victim is stable at Conroe Regional Medical Center, police said. According to investigators, everyone involved is between the ages of 16 and 18. The investigation is ongoing.

Yesterday, custodians found the two-ton tiger was covered in bright blue paint.

After the vandalism was announced, administrators say several students came forward with information about the possible culprit. The principal says the act was not done as a senior class prank.

The tiger memorializes Grady Spikes, who taught at Conroe High School before winning election as Precinct 2 justice of the peace.

Blind horse, 25, still a champion for Conroe owner

AP  CONROE, TX -- When Thomas Boyd of Conroe began looking for a horse to add to his family's stable a few years ago, he thought he found the perfect one on Craig's List.

Boyd, operations manager for City Glass in Cleveland, and his wife, Amber, drove from their home in Conroe to Alvin to inspect the horse they'd seen online.

What they found was an older, neglected animal that didn't look worth the money it would take to feed him.

"Nothing like the picture," said Boyd. "You could see every bone in his body. He was starving."

The owner was asking $800 for the horse, but Boyd said he didn't think the sickly animal was worth more than $200 or $300, if that much.

"I messed with him a little out in the pasture, and we walked back up to the truck and got ready to leave," said Boyd. "He ran over there by us and started braying."

The owner was amazed. She told Boyd it was the most action she'd seen out of the horse in a long time.

Still hesitant, Boyd gave $300 for the animal, took him home and named him Scooby Doo.

"It was probably a year I spent with him, every day, brushing him down, giving him baths, feeding him," said Boyd. "But I got him back to health."

The lady who sold the horse said he hadn't had much riding time, but Boyd said when he rode Scooby for the first time, it was magic.

"It was like riding a dream," he said.

Boyd began roping with Scooby a short while later and discovered the old horse loved it.

Even after Scooby lost his sight, the two were able to work together through spur and touch signals.

After participating in a "playday" (a family-oriented horse riding competition) three years ago as a practice horse for their daughter, Boyd said Scooby picked up barrel and pole racing like a natural, in spite of his blindness.

"Low and behold -- I brought him out here, he wants to run," said Boyd.

Completely blind and 25 years old, Scooby still loves to compete. He and Boyd are currently tied for first place in the Tarkington Prairie Playday Spring Buckle Series.

Held over a period of four weeks, the series includes pole, barrel and straight barrel races, as well as a "mystery" event.

TPPS coordinator Patty Vandver, who began TPPS with her husband, Bubba, said Scooby and Boyd are an inspiration to everyone.

"They are really something special," she said with a smile.

Boyd said he's tried to retire the horse, but every time the family gets ready to leave for a competition, Scooby runs to the fence,

"He's a warrior," Boyd chuckled. "He just doesn't want to stop."

Boyd said, if nothing else, he wants people to learn from his experience with Scooby.

"A lot of people give up on horses, just because of an injury or old age or no matter what it might be," he explained. "But an animal's not done `til they're done. You might not win all the races, but you need to let an animal do what they've got to do."

Plane makes emergency landing in downtown Conroe

Conroe police say this plane made an emergency landing on the streets of downtown Conroe on Tuesday night Conroe police say this plane made an emergency landing on the streets of downtown Conroe on Tuesday night

CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- A plane made an emergency landing in the streets of downtown Conroe, according to the Conroe Police Department.

The incident happened at around 9:50pm Tuesday at 6th Street at Davis.

The pilot has less 100 hours of flying time and has only had her pilot license for about three months when she came face to face with an emergency no pilot ever wants to see.

Officials say 22-year-old Sarah Chantal Rovner took off last night from West Houston Airport on assignment with the Civil Air Patrol. About six miles out her plane lost power.

At first Rovner hoped to glide back to the airport, but the plane was not going to make it. So Rovner decided to land on East Davis Street in Conroe. Once she touched down Rovner's plane hit a small power line, then after turning onto 6th Street the plane knocked down a sign. The wing was sheared off after she moved out of the way of an oncoming car.

"The one thing that I would say is that I'm looking forward to flying with her," said Lt. Col. Bob Beeley with the Civil Air Patrol. "She is an excellent pilot. She did a good job. She did what she was trained to do."

The plane belongs to the Air Force and will be turned over to the insurance company. Investigators still don't know why her engine lost power.

Woman dies helping stranded driver in Conroe

See it on TV? Check here.   CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- A woman from Willis was killed driving home from her own birthday party last night.

Tammy Rhoades was out celebrating her 45th birthday when she pulled over to help a stranded driver on Interstate 45 near FM 3083.

The first driver got a flat tire in the construction zone in Conroe and stopped in a moving lane of traffic. Rhoades pulled behind him and put her flashers on

The driver of a third vehicle then plowed into the back of Rhoades' vehicle, smashing it so badly that the back seat ended up in the front seat.

Later, Conroe police arrested 21-year-old driver Tyler Shelton. He's charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Police advise anyone who gets a flat tire along the construction zone on I-45 in Conroe to keep driving on their bad wheel until they can get to an area of the freeway to exit.

2-alarm blaze damages large home on Lake Conroe

CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- Firefighters battled a 2-alarm house fire at a large home on Lake Conroe early Sunday.

The fire broke out at around 4am at a home on La Jolla Circle just off Walden Road.

When the Conroe Fire Department arrived, they said heavy flames were shooting through the roof.

Conroe firefighters quickly called for a second alarm as winds fanned the flames on the almost 6,000-sf home and threatened neighbors houses.

According to officials, fire hydrant pressure was low, causing additional problems.

Help soon arrived from Willis, North Montgomery County, Lake Conroe, New Waverly, Splendora, River Plantation and Montgomery Fire Departments.

The fire was brought under control after 5am.

The home, which was appraised last year at $675,000, sustained extensive damage.

The owners of the home were out of town, officials said. No one was injured.
