Police get into gunfight with shooting suspect

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Investigators say police officers got into a gunfight with a man suspected of shooting a woman at a complex in southwest Houston.

The initial shooting happened around 6:30pm at an apartment complex near Holly Hall and Highway 288. Police say a suspect opened fire on a woman and fled the scene.

Houston police say an officer was searching the area for an aggravated assault suspect when he observed someone matching the suspect's description walking westbound in the 2100 block of Hepburn. Officer Moore gave the suspect verbal commands to stop and show his hands. The suspect then turned, produced a pistol, and fired at the officer one time, striking the officer's patrol vehicle.

The officer then discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect once time.

The suspect, identified as Savorge Lee Curl, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life threatening wounds.

"I didn't know what it was. I thought it was a bank robbery. I didn't know there was gunfire or anything," resident Angel Fuentes said.

"This never happens here. It's a medical center, it's safe supposedly. But I've lived here for six years and this is the first time I've seen anything like this happen before," resident Rick DeLeon said. "My wife found a bullet. It ricocheted off the tree here and it hit the floor and she found it."

The woman's condition also was not known.

The officer was not injured in the incident. Officer D.C. Moore was sworn in as an officer in September, 2010 and is assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.

Curl, 31, has a pending charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents within the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
