Armed bank robber sought after spraying tellers in the face with pepper spray

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The search is on for a bank robber who used pepper spray to attack a teller and customer and get away with some of the bank's money.

It happened right around noon inside the Citibank on I-45 near Highway 242 in the Shenandoah area.

Police are calling this a brazen bank robbery, one they've never seen before in this area. The suspect was armed with a gun, but attacked with pepper spray.

Surveillance video shows the suspect as he walked into the bank then pulled out what police say was a semi-automatic gun. The video shows him hand the bank teller his backpack, then walk towards the only customer in the bank and take aim at the customer's face. He can be seen spraying the customer and another bank teller with what Shenandoah police believe is pepper spray.

Then the suspect takes off towards two offices inside the bank and aiming that chemical spray at other bank employees. Police say he attacked at least three employees and one customer before he grabbed the bag of stolen money and fled.

"Once some of them were hit in the face, they ducked down, they followed their emergency protocols exclusively. They were able to alert law enforcement very quickly, we were able to respond very quickly, but unfortunately the person fled on foot. We've had units in the area since just after noon looking for the individuals," said Asst. Chief Bryan Carlisle with the Shenandoah Police Department.

HazMat responded to the scene. Police say some of the employees' eyes were irritated and they along with the customer were treated at the scene. All are expected to be OK.

The suspect is described as a black male, between 6 foot 1 and 6 foot 3, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, brown hoodie, white shirt, blue baseball hat, big dark sunglasses with a backpack and a shotgun.
