Galveston to have lifeguards certified as officers next year

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- Officials from Galveston Island's Park Board say armed lifeguards certified as police officers will be patrolling the beaches next fiscal year.

The statement comes after two city council members say they're against using $126,000 towards the program.

According to the Galveston County Daily News, the funds come from tax revenues from hotel rooms and profits from conventions.

Eight of Galveston's 100 lifeguards became certified police officers last February. Their duties are to enforce ordinances.
