Train derailment near downtown Houston

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Firefighters are on the scene of a train derailment near downtown Houston right now.

The derailment occurred near Commerce and St. Emanuel just before 10am. Seven or eight cars derailed, and two overturned. No injuries have been reported, and there's no word of any public health threat. Smoke or steam can be seen escaping from some of the cars.

The containers involved are filled with powdered plastic. It has spilled from at least two containers. Additionally, a load of steel beams fell onto the tracks. There are no hazardous materials involved.


The plastic material could be there for a couple of days as crews work to clean it up. The train is blocking Commerce near St. Emanuel.
