Ft. Bend Co. residents worried about possible closure of two small town post offices

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Some folks in Fort Bend County are worried about how they'll stay connected via mail as two small town post offices are slated for closure.

If the offices close, they'll have to travel farther to mail items, even use post office boxes. But it's not a done deal yet.

The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing the Thompsons and Orchard post offices. The postal service has already closed more than 500 post offices nationwide. It says it wants to preserve small, rural post offices like this one in Thompsons. So it's asking residents to weigh in.

They are not the horses used for the Pony Express, but they graze near a modern-day post office that soon could be extinct just the same.

In the town of Thompsons, everyone gets mail at a P.O. Box.

"We have a lot of history out here. Most people don't even know we are here," said Rita Miller.

Miller has had hers since she was married in the 70s. The post office has been around a lot longer, since well before the turn of the century. It's part, however small, of what put Thompsons on the map. An address. A place 236 people call home.

"I would hate to see us lose our identity," Miller said.

But in an effort to cope with a nearly $12 billion budgetary shortfall, the U.S. Postal Service has identified hundreds of small rural post offices which could be closed.

The USPS is sending surveys to the communities, asking them what solutions they would support. A USPS spokesperson tells Eyewitness News they will only close post offices if 60 percent or more of those surveyed agreed to. Thompsons' mayor says no thanks.

"To go to the nearest post office would be approximately 11 miles," said Mayor Freddie Newsome Jr.

Other options include creating rural routes for roadside mailbox delivery. But that would also mean closing the post office and changing every address nearby to the next closest post office's city.

"You wouldn't have any way of knowing that we were here because we would have a Richmond address," said Miller.

She says it would be a blow to their identity. They plan to fight to keep the post office alive.

One other option that seems the most viable is that the USPS has suggested hours at rural post offices be cut in half to just four hours a day.

There are several public meetings coming up on this if your post office is affected.

Driver leads police on chase with two small kids in his car

A man will likely face charges after leading officers on short car chase with two small children in his car. A man will likely face charges after leading officers on short car chase with two small children in his car.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man will likely face charges after leading officers on short car chase with two small children in his car.

The Harris Co. Sheriff's Office says a deputy stopped a car in north Harris County because two small children were not in car seats. The deputy says the driver became aggressive then pushed the deputy, jumped back in the car and took off with the kids and a woman still inside. The chase ended about a mile away.

"I think it was pretty stupid to run from the police with a kid in the car, then a little while later a deputy walked up with what looked like a newborn. I mean, it was very, it kinda just made me mad that someone would run from the police while doing that," said eyewitness Rod Rice.

The children were OK but the driver said he didn't feel good and was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Deputies plan to charge the driver the driver felony evading arrest.

Man charged in home invasion attack where grandmother, small children were victimized

See it on TV? Check here.Ivan Jayasi, 22, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Ivan Jayasi, 22, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston grandmother was terrorized in her own home last week, and now a man is facing charges.

On March 6, the woman was at her home in the 900 block of Eubanks in north Houston with her two small grandchildren when two men wearing bandanas over their faces burst into the house. Court documents state that Ivan Jayasi, 22, grabbed the woman, while another man pointed a shotgun at her.

While the other man searched the house, Jayasi reportedly held the gun on the victim and her granddaughter. The woman told police that when the men didn't find what they were looking for, they ordered her and her grandchildren into a bathroom. After a time, they came out and the men were gone. They apparently stole only a suitcase containing a typewriter.

The victim told police she believed she recognized Jayasi as an acquaintance of her daughter and son-in-law. A neighbor who witnessed the men go into the home with a shotgun and bandanas over their faces identified him to police as well.

Jayasi is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Bail has been set at $50,000.

Mulch fire causes small blasts in Livingston area

LIVINGSTON, TX (KTRK) -- The entire state of Texas is extremely dry and that means there's a danger for wildfires here in southeast Texas.

We've seen west Texas wildfires, and this one in Livingston, in Polk County is burning this morning at a mulch factory. Firefighters said the flames reached propane tanks at one point, causing a couple explosions.

A forest service helicopter was sent up to pour water onto that fire. Dozens of departments are assisting, and they say this could take several days to extinguish. No injuries have been reported so far.

Right now, wildfire weather conditions are among the worst in our state's history. Fire marshals say even if you aren't under a burn ban or a red flag warning, they are encouraging people in rural areas around Houston not to light campfires or burn any trash or yard debris.

"Be aware that it could happen and if it does just evacuate and get out. Don't try to stay there and collect anything," said Ray Uballe with the Texas Forest Service.

Red flag warnings will be in effect for us today, and we will keep you posted on that as well as the fire in Livingston.
