Police looking for suspects in shooting

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police are asking for the public's help in identifying two suspects involved in the shooting of a man outside a strip club about 4:35am on April 8.

Police say the victim and a friend had just left the Dreams Gentleman's Club at 2700 Crossview. As they were walking to their vehicle, they saw a man standing on the sidewalk. Another man then came running from a nearby alley carrying a pistol. He pointed it at the two men and ordered them to raise their hands.

The second man told his friend to run and then fled. According to police, the victim, instead of running, raised his hands in the air and the suspect shot him. Both suspects then ran to a white car and fled. The vehicle is described as a white 2001 to 2005 Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows and swagger rims.

The shooter is described only as a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 185 to 190 pounds, wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap and a blue bandana over his face. The second suspect is described only as a black male in his 20s, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 120 to 130 pounds with braided hair.

The victim, 30, of Houston, suffered gunshot wounds to the wrist and abdomen. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated and released.

Looking for answers to unusual flooding

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Clean up is continuing following the stunning flood damage seen across the Houston area from Monday's storms. The flood waters have receded in southeast Houston where students and apartment residents had to be evacuated.

It's not generally an area of town where we see major flooding problems, although we haven't had this type of torrential downpour for quite some time. We've been searching for some answers as to just what happened in the neighborhood near Griggs and Long.

The short answer is -- there was a large amount of rain in a short amount of time. But it's natural for people to search for a cause behind a disaster.

Sam Nickerson, whose apartment flooded, said, "What I believe is it's the railing system, because they always building stuff."

Light rail construction, METRO says, did not contribute to the flooding. But then there's something that caught our eye -- a giant metal culvert that carries storm water from a tributary of Brays Bayou. The metal is torn in two, the pipe upended by the force of the water and the bank partially collapsed, damming some of the water from draining into the bayou.

"It's not maintained by the city," said Braxton Cole with Houston Public Works.

On Tuesday city storm water crews were looking at the damage the culvert failure might have caused. It is not a city drainage pipe. And while the county's flood control district has jurisdiction over the waterway, a representative says it's not the county's either.

Fred Garcia with the Harris County Flood Control said, "At this point I'd have to say that's part of the railroad operation for draining their right of way, is the way it looks to me."

Before deregulation this was the property of Houston Belt and Terminal. HBT is now co-owned by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern. A Union Pacific representative says crews responded as soon as they could to help the water subside.

On Tuesday crews were removing the section of failed pipe, which also has a rail trestle above it. Railroad officials are "investigating the impact the collapse may have caused."

Authorities looking for missing Liberty County man

Edwin "Clarke" Rogers, 62, has been missing since December 30th.

  LIBERTY, TX (KTRK) -- The Liberty County Sherriff's Office is asking for your help to locate a man who hasn't been seen or heard from in about a week and a half.

Edward "Clark" Rogers, 62, was last seen on December 30. His Jeep Cherokee was later recovered on Highway 321 near County Road 2243 between Cleveland and Tarkington Prairie. Inside the truck, investigators found his cell phone and medication. Family members and friends are concerned because they say he wouldn't go anywhere without these two items.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office, along with Equusearch and the Tarkington Prairie Fire Department spent Sunday searching for Rogers. If you have any information about Rogers' whereabouts, you're urged to call the Liberty County Sheriff's Office at (936) 336-4500.

Humble police looking for sex assault suspect

  HUMBLE, TX (KTRK) -- Police in Humble are looking for a suspect in a sex assault that took place just this morning.

At about 11am, the Humble Police Department received a call about a sexual assault that had taken place in the 8100 block of Rankin Road.

Police have not released the details of the attack, but they are looking for a suspect. He is described as a Hispanic male, about 5'6", with a thin build and braided hair. He was last seen wearing a white Southpole pull-over and shorts. The suspect has numerous tattoos, including a prominent one on the left side of his neck saying "No Love", a tattoo underneath his left eye and numerous tattoos on his hands and arms.

The man was last seen driving a small black older model SUV, possibly a Blazer style, with a dent in the lower third of the driver's side door, possibly extending to the back door. The male had a small silver pistol that he used in the commission of the crime. He may go by the name of Thomas or Tomas.

Houston Railroad Museum looking for new home

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Railroad Museum has one year to find a new home.

It currently sits on property owned by Global Stainless Supply Company in northeast Houston. The company is expanding, so the museum has to move, and needs to find a new home by the end of 2012.

At this time, the museum is only open on Saturdays, April to November. It hopes a new location, perhaps close to downtown, could bring in more visitors.

Phil Scheps, the museum's treasurer, said, "It's interesting. Houston owes much of its development to the railroad, and if you look at the city seal for Houston you see the steam locomotive on it to this day."

The move will take money. The Houston Railroad Museum estimates it will have to raise at least $1-2 million to complete the project. The museum is run entirely by volunteers.

Grand jury looking at day care owner's murder charges

  HOUSTON -- A Harris County grand jury is now looking at the murder case against Jessica Tata.

Tata's attorney, Mike Deguerin, told us murder charges against Tata were presented to a grand jury today. She is accused of leaving seven children alone at her daycare in west Houston in February. A fire erupted in the house, killing four children and hurting three others. The DA's office told us the case is still being presented to the grand jury. Tata faces nine counts in all, including four counts of felony murder. She also faces three counts of abandoning a child under 15, and two counts of reckless injury to a child.

The felony murder charges carry a punishment of up to 99 years in prison.

HISD looking to hire 300 new teachers after layoffs

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hundreds of Houston ISD teachers who were given layoff notices want to know why the district is looking to hire almost 300 new teachers next year.

A district spokesman says they have known from the initial rounds of layoffs, there would later be vacancies and this all has to do with the district being decentralized, meaning each principal makes their own cuts and does all their own hiring. The Houston school district informed about 950 teachers that this year would be their last. More than 700 of the layoffs, the district claims, are due to budget shortfalls. So when 286 vacancies were posted on its website on Monday, many frustrated teachers given those layoff notices began calling their union rep. "They were so upset and so demoralized, saying this is what we thought, they are just trying to run us out and try and hire first year teachers. And that's the prevailing view few out there whether or not it's fact," Houston Federation of Teachers President Gayle Fallon said. With HISD being decentralized, a teacher who is laid off at one school is not automatically transferred to another school with an opening. That teacher must interview with the new prospective principal again since each principal has autonomy on teacher hires.
