Man charged in wife's shooting death last month reportedly killed himself Thursday

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man charged in the shooting death of his wife last month reportedly killed himself on Thursday.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says shortly before 10am Thursday they were contacted by security reporting that Thomas A. Quinlan came into the April Sound Subdivision going to his home on North April Waters. Security officers knew of the emergency protective order in place against Quinlan prohibiting him from being at the house.

Quinlan was arrested on December 30, 2012, for the shooting death of his wife, Donna Quinlan.

Deputies say when they arrived Thursday, they learned that no one was in the home other than Quinlan and they could not make contact with him. SWAT deputies entered the home and say they found Quinlan dead of what is believed to be a self-inflicted wound.

Quinlan was released from the Montgomery County Jail on January 3 after posting the $500,000 bond set at the time of his arrest last month.

Deputies say the investigation continues.

State Senator Mario Gallegos reportedly gravely ill

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A leader, not only in the Hispanic community, but for all of Harris County, is fighting for his life. State Senator Mario Gallegos is in grave condition at Methodist Hospital.

Known for being tough when it comes to issues he cares about, family and friends are hoping that toughness will help him recover.

Out of intensive care now, Senator Gallegos is in his own room at the Methodist Hospital with family, friends and colleagues never far away. He's reportedly having complications from a liver transplant he had five years ago.

His campaign office called his condition grave, but the atmosphere not necessarily somber.

"He's responding to people and laughing told a couple of jokes and obviously his circumstance is a tough one and he probably recognizes that," said State Rep. Garnett Doleman (D) of Houston. "But it being a tough one, the time we all have, you don't waste the time talking about that. You make sure you talk about the good times."

Rep. Coleman visited with Gallegos on Friday. The two have been friends for 20 years.

"Mario is a man with a big heart and superior spirit," said Coleman.

Coleman spoke to us, not to disrespect the family, but to honor his friend.

Once a longtime Houston firefighter, Gallegos entered the political arena 22 years ago, first as a state representative, then since 1994 as a state senator representing District 6. In fact, he was the first Mexican-American state senator elected in Harris County.

And as a politician, private matters are public. In 2006, he acknowledged he spent a month in residential treatment for alcoholism. The next year, he announced he has cirrhosis of the liver. A few days later, he received a liver transplant.

Gallegos ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, but faces Republican R.W. Bray in the November election.

A statement released Friday afternoon on his behalf read in part, "Senator Gallegos' family is at his side during this difficult time, and they have asked me to respectfully request that they be allowed their privacy, so that they may devote their undivided attention to their loved one."

Police searching for shooting suspects reportedly wearing police uniforms

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are searching for four suspects who were reportedly wearing police uniforms when they opened fire at a northwest Houston apartment complex Friday morning.

The shooting happened around 11am at the Sir Charles Apartments in the 10000 block of Hanka.

Police say four men wearing what appeared to be police uniforms opened fire at an apartment unit with a woman and baby inside. The woman said a bullet came through the wall but no one was injured.

Another resident who heard the gunshots also was punched by one of the suspects after he mistook them for police officers and asked about the shooting.

The suspects then fled the scene.

Police believe the suspects were trying to target a man who lived in that apartment unit.

First grader reportedly brings gun to school

  MAGNOLIA, TX (KTRK) -- Parents in Magnolia are getting letters about a gun possibly being taken to class by a first grader.

It happened at Ellisor Elementary School on May 9. District officials say after school was already dismissed, a student told a parent that another student had brought the gun to class. The parent then called police.

The gun, which was unloaded, was ultimately tracked down. There's no word yet on how the kid got his hands on the gun, or what discipline he may face.
