Pregnant woman hit by car following officer-involved shooting

Crystal KobzaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- An off-duty Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office deputy tried to stop suspected shoplifters and set off a series of events early Sunday that ended with an innocent woman getting hit by a car.

It happened around 2am in the parking lot of a 24-hour Walmart on the North Freeway near Tidwell in northwest Houston.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, a man and woman distracted an off-duty deputy working as a security guard by telling him there was a wreck in the parking lot.

That's when the alleged shoplifters made their move out of the store.

"Moments later the manager came running. They had obviously loaded down some baskets with meat and rolled it out the front door," Pct. 4 Assistant Chief Mark Herman said. "The manager saw it, alerted the officer, and that's when the confrontation began."

As the deputy was detaining the woman, the male suspect ran to his car. Authorities say that's when he attempted to use his car as a weapon.

"Once getting into his vehicle, the individual tried to run the officer over," Herman said. "The officer drew his weapon and discharged his weapon numerous times at the suspect."

The deputy wasn't the only person caught in the path of the out-of-control vehicle. An innocent bystander loading groceries into her car was knocked to the ground by her own vehicle after the suspect ran his car straight into hers.

"She was ground transported to LBJ [Hospital]. We found out later she was pregnant," Herman said. "We know she has cuts and bruises and they're doing an evaluation on her being that she is pregnant."

The male suspect fled the scene. Houston police and HCSO investigators are hoping his accomplice will help them locate him. They are also reviewing security video taken from the parking lot.

Both suspects face numerous charges, including theft and aggravated assault.

Pregnant mom accused of leaving kid in car due in court

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pregnant mother who allegedly passed out in her car with her baby after trying to get a piercing is expected in court this morning.

Workers at a tattoo parlor on the North Freeway say Stephanie Irene Santana showed up in the middle of the night Wednesday asking how long it would take for a piercing.

Workers kicked her out because she seemed intoxicated and they called police. Police say they found a beer bottle in her diaper bag and Xanax in her car.

Santana is charged with child endangerment.

Police: Allegedly drunk pregnant mom left kid in car

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pregnant mother faces several charges after police say she was found drunk outside a tattoo parlor.

The woman had her 10-month-old child in her car at the time. That girl is now in protective custody of CPS as workers try to find a suitable relative to take care of the child, and her mom sits in jail.

It was at Dagos Tattoo Shop on the North Freeway where workers say something disturbing happened early Wednesday morning. They say a seven-month pregnant woman was at the center of it all.

A tattoo worker who calls himself 'Yogi' said, "I knew she was stumbling. I knew she was on something."

Yogi says the woman, who police have now identified as Stephanie Irene Santana, 20, appeared to be heavily intoxicated when she came into Dagos at around 4am asking for a piercing.

"She asked me how long would the piercing take, and I said why would you ask me how long would it take because there is nobody in here. And she said because I have a baby in the car. That's when I asked her who's watching the baby. She said nobody, the baby is asleep," Yogi recalled.

Workers say they quickly became concerned and immediately asked Santana to leave.

Yogi explained, "I said, you know what, I can't pierce you, or even sign you up with a baby in your car. You need to go outside and tend to your baby."

Yogi says he and his coworkers called police as they watched Santana stumble back out to her car and fall asleep behind the wheel. They say her 10-month-old little girl was also sleeping, unrestrained in the passenger's seat.

"She was asleep in the car and we called the police," Yogi said. "She was asleep in the car for a long time before they got here."

Police say they found several beer bottles and some Xanax in Santana's car. They say the woman is now facing numerous charged including DWI, child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance.

"She was looking for trouble," Yogi claimed. "She got everything she deserves, because the baby was in danger and she needs to be where she needs to be."

CPS workers say the 10-month-old little girl is doing well.
