Police: Man pushed two women from moving car on Katy Freeway

  Pooja LodhiaHOUSTON (KTRK) -- The manhunt is on for the person who pushed two women from a moving car, killing one of them and seriously injuring the other. The circumstances leading to the brutal attacks remain unknown.

The first woman was found along the Katy Freeway at Westgreen. The body of the second woman was found near Grand Parkway. Officers found the suspect's abandoned car further down the road in Brookshire, but they're still looking for the man witnesses say was going more than 100 miles per hour when he shoved the two women out of his car.

It happened last night on the Katy Freeway. According to police, the man shot one of his female passengers and pushed her out onto the road at the Katy Freeway and Westgreen. That woman is at Memorial Hermann Hospital, but there has been no update on her condition.

Police say the man kept driving and pushed the second woman out of the vehicle at the Katy Freeway and the Grand Parkway. Her body was so mangled when police arrived they couldn't tell if she had been shot before she was pushed out.

Witnesses tell us the suspect sped off.

"This guy flew past us, probably 100, 105 miles per hour at least. I saw him hit the side of this 18-wheeler that's on the side in front of us and skidded off the road and ended up in the ditch right here and the guy that was driving it got out and started running," said witness Daniel Bachrach.

Another witness, Jose Pedraza, told us, "The car was all shattered and there seemed to be blood on the seats."

The investigation continues. Houston police have not identified the suspect or the victims.

The Katy Freeway westbound lanes at Highway 99 were closed down for hours overnight due to the investigation. They reopened around 5:30am.

Historic League City tree being preserved in large-scale moving operation

LEAGUE CITY, TX (KTRK) -- It's the start of a moving process for a tree in League City that's been standing for decades. It's a large-scale operation to preserve history.

The tree was standing at the corner of Louisiana and FM 518, and will soon settle in to its new home.

We've seen how most developers go in and bulldoze every tree when building a new neighborhood, and then they plant those little six-foot trees in the yard. Well, League City leaders are showing the simplest solution is not always the best one.

After more than a hundred years in one spot, this rare hybrid oak will start a new life just down the road in League City. Residents can't help but stop in awe.

"Totally fascinated by the way they are going about this. It's great to see something like this saved," said Jim Michaels.

The Compton Oak found itself in harm's way when construction began on a road improvement project to widen Louisiana Avenue at FM 518. League City council decided to spend more than $190,000 for Hess Landscape Construction of Southern California to transplant the tree.

They have unearthed tons of dirt, just far enough from the tree, to preserve its main root system. Using wood, crews have built what amounts to a large wooden planter around the tree to keep it stable and nourished. Stress from the move is showing from the yellow leaves.

"The tree is being closely monitored. We do a lot of prep work. The contractor has actually done a lot of feeding, it's being hydrated. I don't know if you can see there is a water hose on it, so it's constantly being hydrated to reduce stress," said Heather McKnight, League City arborist.

The heavy lifting is yet to come. Weighing about 540,000 pounds, it will be hoisted out of the earth.

"We have two cranes that will lift the tree, set it onto a big steel plate and then they'll drag it down an open field," said project manager Scott Tuma.

Private land has been donated for its new home near a planned water conservation park, where this Texas-sized tree will be a model of preservation.

"It's nice to see them save it and I think it says a lot for the city and for the county on what they are trying to do here," said Michaels.

The big move will happen on June 5 when the hybrid oak is hoisted out of the ground and replanted near a water conservation park just down the road. League City hopes to have a live web cam up for the event.

Ex-Houston mayor Lanier to hold moving sale

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Bob and Elyse Lanier are one of Houston's best known power couples. But the former mayor and his wife are facing a challenge that most everyone deals with at some point -- downsizing! They are moving into a new smaller home in a high-rise and selling an amazing lifetime of treasures.

It's a fashionista's dream. Starting at $300, top designer shoes -- size 9 -- from a woman who's in the best-dressed hall of fame. Then, there are those handbags, including one for $2,500.

"This Hermes bag I bought when I was in Paris about seven years ago, and I used it one time," Elyse said.

There's even an eye-popping collection of her trademark glasses. And of course, some of her fabulous designer outfits also are up for sale.

"This is a gorgeous, gorgeous Oscar De La Renta, which I am not sure I wore it once because I could never get it to fit right," Elyse said.

Some treasures are far bigger, and come with stories about the Laniers' exciting life as Houston icons. A 15-foot table with Chippendale chairs graced their dining room until recently; it's the centerpiece of many legendary dinner parties.

"We've entertained important people. We've had a lot of interesting, important decisions even in the last 12 years in our home," Elyse said.

Now that room is empty, and the Laniers walk through their 13,000-square foot mansion for the last times. The new owners, who bought it for more than $6 million, will be moving in soon.

It's a sign of the times. Lanier is now 87, and getting around is not as easy as it once was.

"Our needs are different. Where this is three floors, we want to be on one floor," Elyse said.

He grew up poor in Baytown in a house without an indoor toilet before moving into several homes in Houston's most exclusive neighborhood. He says he never looks back.

"It was just time to move on; I felt that way here, it made sense more to be there than it did here," Bob said.

He won't have his famous rose gardens or a pool fronting the golf course, but they are taking their artwork, along with scores of framed photos, and his office furniture. And there's something else he wants.

"I forgot to put it in the contract but I'd like to retain that center TV," he said jokingly. "Well it's a new TV and it's got a nice bright color to it."

Elyse, too, has something that won't be for sale -- her jewelry.

"It's not hard to move jewelry," she said.

The Lanier estate sale begins this Wednesday at the Houston Design Center and runs through Saturday.

Police: Suspected drunk driver slams into moving truck

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man is recovering in the hospital after deputies say he ran into the side of a moving truck.

It happened around 9pm on Cypress North Houston near Telge.

Investigators say the man was allegedly drunk and running through parking lots when he ran into the street and right into a truck driving down the road. He went to the hospital with head and leg injuries but is expected to be OK.

The truck driver will not face any charges for the incident.

Man robbed, shot while moving into new home

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two suspects are at large after a robbery and shooting near downtown Houston, and police believe the same men are responsible for at least one other robbery in the area.

According to investigators, the shooting victim was moving into a rental home on Brooks St. at Gano St.

He was in the process of moving in around 6:30am Sunday when two men jumped out of a truck to rob him.

The suspects shot the man once in the chest, and then fled, police said. The victim's landlord heard the gun fire and called 9-1-1.

Emergency officials transported the man to an area hospital. His condition is unknown.

Police said they are still looking for the suspects.

Investigators believe the suspects in this case may also be responsible for another robbery that happened nearby.
