Driver dies after car crashes into tree, bursts into flames

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say the driver of a Chevy Malibu was killed after the car crash into a tree, split in half and burst into flames.

The wreck happened around 8:45pm off Airport and MLK Boulevard in southeast Houston.

Police say a driver in a Chevy Malibu was going over 100 miles per hour when the car lost control and hit a tree. The impact was so intense that the car actually climbed the tree about 10 feet before falling and bursting into flames.

Police say the car also split in half.

Police say there was a child seat in the car, but they think the driver was alone at the time of the wreck.

Car crashes into day care center for disabled kids

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A car slammed into a day care center for disabled children in west Harris County. Luckily, none of the students were there at the time.

The crash happened Friday night at Smartie Pants Academy on Highway 6. Cleanup began Saturday, but the owner is wondering how they'll get repairs finished.

A.J. Swenney, 6, loves going to Smartie Pants Academy.

"Because you get to learn a lot," he said.

A.J. and 30 other kids -- many of them with disabilities -- go to the center learn and play almost every day. None of them were there when the crash happened, but they almost were.

"It sounded like an accident, but when I went up and looked, I seen the car inside the building," witness Robert Shawn Blackwell said.

The front entrance of the day care was smashed to pieces. Witnesses called 911, got the driver's insurance information and then called Sumiko Hamilton, the owner of Smartie Pants Academy.

"I was devastated. I jumped out of the chair, got in my truck and I pulled up, not knowing what to expect," Hamilton said. "When I got here, all the front windows were busted out. The building was left wide open."

The owner says Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators left the building damaged and open without contacting her before they left. HCSO officials were unable to confirm the claim.

Hamilton put up $500 dollars to board up the windows right away, and she plans to re-open on Monday despite the estimated $7,000 in damage that remains.

"It would be hard for me to close the business and allow my parents to miss out on work and my children to miss out on school because of an accident by a person that was irresponsible," she said.

Even as she worries about repairs and insurance claims, Hamilton tells us she feels lucky.

"Actually, yesterday night was supposed to be a parents night out where we stayed open until midnight," she said. "I canceled it at 5pm yesterday. Thank God I canceled that yesterday because my babies would have been in the building."

The suspect was then taken into police custody. The second suspect was taken into custody at the first location.

Driver crashes through fence at Women's Hospital of Texas

See it on TV? Check here.  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An air ambulance was almost hit while parked on the helipad at The Women's Hospital of Texas off OST and Fannin this morning.

Investigators say a man driving a new Dodge Challenger crashed through a fence on the hospital grounds around 2:30am.

The car was going so fast it didn't stop until it ran into a guard rail along the helipad. The car stopped only 50 feet from the air ambulance parked there.

The man and the woman riding with him were taken to a hospital to be treated. A police spokesperson says the driver is in serious condition, but the passenger suffered only minor scrapes and bruises. Police say they found a container of alcohol in that car.

They also estimate the damage to the hospital grounds to be in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

HPD cruiser crashes en route to violent home invasion

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two Houston police officers rushing to the scene of a violent home invasion in southeast Houston crashed their squad car into a light pole.

Investigators said the officers were on their way to a home invasion in progress where a woman was being assaulted when the accident happened.

Just before 10pm Saturday on 75th street near Erath, another vehicle pulled out in front of their squad car.

Investigators said the driving officer swerved to avoid hitting the other vehicle, but they hit a curb and lost control of the car.

The cruiser hit a tree and then crashed into a utility pole, splitting the pole in half.

According to investigators, the other driver did not stop.

The police unit was mangled and is out of commission with deployed airbags and flattened tires, but both officers walked away without injuries.

Other officers did make it to the home invasion scene. The victim had called 9-1-1 when she saw a strange man inside her home.

When police arrived at the home on Manchester near 77th Street, they say the man was caught assaulting the woman.

The suspect was arrested. There is no word yet on the extent of the victim's injuries.

1 dead, several hurt in two Highway 6 crashes

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pair of wrecks in northwest Harris County left one woman dead and several others hurt.

It all started around 2:30am Saturday when three vehicles were involved in a wreck on Texas 6 near F.M. 529.

At least one person was taken to the hospital by Life Flight and several others were transported via ambulance, investigators said.

According to deputies, a tow truck driver was leaving the scene a short time later and T-boned another car that was pulling onto Highway 6 from a stop sign.

A 24-year-old woman behind the wheel of that car was killed, officials said.

Deputies are still investigating exactly what happened at both scenes. They said alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but high speed may have been involved.

Car crashes through roof of Santa Fe business

Police said this car left the roadway and traveled up the railroad track embankment, then jumped the railroad tracks, flying about 100 feet through the air and crashing through the roof of a business across the street Police said this car left the roadway and traveled up the railroad track embankment, then jumped the railroad tracks, flying about 100 feet through the air and crashing through the roof of a business across the street (Santa Fe Police Department)

SANTA FE, TX (KTRK) -- Police in Santa Fe are investigating a crash that must have looked like something out of an action movie.

Officials said a commercial burglary alarm went off at Gulf Coast Aerobic Services in the 13200 block of Texas 6 early Saturday. When officers arrived around 2am, they found a crashed vehicle inside of the business.

Investigators said 20-year-old Royce Morales of Santa Fe was driving north on Avenue R at around 90mph in a 30mph zone when the accident happened.

Morales failed to negotiate a turn, officials said. The vehicle left the roadway and traveled up the railroad track embankment, which caused it to go airborne.

Police said the crash was so dynamic that the vehicle jumped the railroad tracks, flying about 100 feet through the air and crashing through the roof.

The car landed upside-down on its nose in the Gulf Coast Aerobic Services building on the opposite side of the railroad tracks.

Officials said early estimates put the damage at more than $25,000.

According to police, the driver of the car was gone by the time they arrived. Detectives said they gathered evidence from the vehicle that led them to Morales, who attempted to report the car stolen.

Police said Morales confessed to being behind the wheel during the crash. Officials are pursuing charges for reckless driving and filing a false report.

School bus crashes into building

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was a scary ride for dozens of students on a bus that crashed along the Hardy toll road Thursday morning. The bus ended up slamming into a building on Crosstimbers before it came to a stop.

The students on the bus were from KIPP 3D Academy and KIPP Dream College Prep. While we still don't know why the driver lost control and hit a building, we do know the children on board responded in a way to which any parent would be proud.

It was a chaotic, frightening scene just off the Hardy toll road -- three dozen students, ranging from kindergarteners to eighth grader, involved in a school bus wreck. Their driver was seemingly unconscious, but through the confusion two of those eighth graders took control.

Francisco De la Cruz and Daniel Ortega first helped the younger children out the back of the bus and then they tended to the injured driver.

"We started giving them their backpacks because they started crying," Francisco said. "So he went to help the bus driver and I was telling the kids to move out of the way so we could get the bus driver out. And we just started helping everybody else."

"She was unconscious. She was bleeding. She was bleeding from her face," Daniel recalled. "I was freaked out. I was so scared."

The boys put those fears aside and kept the other children calm.

"It just came to my mind to help the little kids out and then help myself out later," Francisco said.

Of the children on board, only one was transported to the hospital and has since been released.

Investigators don't yet know what exactly happened. But the private company that owns the bus is among the largest in the country and employs 62,000 bus drivers. They've promised an internal investigation and told me on the phone from their headquarters in Cincinnati that the driver, who has been with them for two years, is a good one.

"She's been a great driver for us," said First Student spokesperson Maureen Richmond. "She came highly recommended and with great skills. Right now it's part of the investigation to figure out what did occur."

At KIPP, they say they teach their kids to be leaders. It's a lesson apparently well learned by the children on the bus, especially the two eighth graders who managed a frightening trip to school.

"Are you a hero?" I asked Daniel.

"The little kids consider me a hero," he responded. "But, yeah, I guess."

The bus company says all employees undergo criminal background and driving history checks before they're hired. They also have 50 hours of classroom and practical training. There are also random drug tests along with semi-annual physical exams. The driver in this case, whose name the company would not release, was a driver for HISD from 1989 to 2002.

The same bus company was involved in a wreck while transporting KIPP students back in April 2010. Ten students suffered minor injuries in that accident.
