Man fatally stabbed after Texans viewing party

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The search for suspects after a man is stabbed to death in a neighborhood where a huge Houston Texans watch party was going on.

That stabbing happened Sunday night on the north side. The party was happening in a yellow house in the 4700 block of McEwen near Cavalcade. But once things spilled out into the street, the victim was stabbed two doors down, in front of his own house.

Neighbor Jerry Laramore said, "Every time there's a ball game, there's a lot of people out there."

Laramore says waking up to a lot of noise outside his window during a Texans game, is not unusual. But Sunday night, there was more than noise.

"I heard them fighting," said neighbor Vickie Cruz. "I just heard bottles, slamming bottles. That's what I heard was cracking bottles."

Police say after the Texans game wrapped up, officers got a call for help. They arrived to break up what cops describe as a large street brawl. But before they got to the scene, one man was stabbed. Family rushed him to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later died.

"Oh yeah, I knew him well. He called me uncle," said Laramore. "I'm not really his uncle but he called me uncle. All the kids do."

The victim's name isn't being released until his entire family is notified. His sister told me he was just 20 years old, and the father of a two-year-old baby girl.

"He was a really nice guy," said neighbor Joann Chapa. "I can't believe this happened to him. He never harmed nobody, he never did nothing to nobody."

Cruz just chatted with the young victim on Sunday, and now asks the same question police are working to answer as well.

"When his sister told me this morning I just broke down crying," she recalled. "I said, 'What happened?'"

The suspect is still at large. Police say they are following up on leads, but anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Arrest made in fatal Surfside beach party shooting

By Crystal KobzaSURFISDE, TX (KTRK) -- An arrest has been made in a deadly shooting at a beach party in Surfside. It's been almost two months since a Houston father -- an innocent bystander -- was killed. Now a suspect is in custody and it turns out he was due to go on trial later this month for another murder -- that of a 19-year-old college student.

Brazoria County officials and Houston police have been working for some time together to track down the person responsible for the shooting death of Derrick Milam, 26. They found their man Thursday night, and this is not the first time he has been charged with murder.

Deandre Gray, 19, is behind bars charged with murdering Milam. The shooting happened back on April 7 during a beach party in Surfside, where authorities say an estimated 15,000 people had gathered.

After investigators received a tip on Gray's whereabouts, they were able to track him down near his house.

"When he jumped out of the car, I understand he had a purse with him, which he threw out or disposed of. The purse contained narcotics and a weapon -- a pistol," said Brazoria County Sheriff Charles Wagner. "This man's a dangerous person. He's now in jail, less of a threat to society."

Investigators say when they located Gray, he took off with a three-year-old in the car, and drove to a nearby Luby's where they found him hiding in a walk-in freezer. The child was left alone in the car.

"He's out on murder, was out on bond for murder, he's alleged to have, our evidence shows he murdered somebody else," Sheriff Wagner said. "That makes him very dangerous."

Gray was arrested and charged with murder in the case of 19-year-old, Sashe Gray Jones, who was fatally shot in 2009. She was an innocent girl, caught in the line of fire and killed after a bullet went through her car door while driving down the road.

Her mother Alfreda Mosley said, "They released him and let him back on the streets. Now another family is grieving and they're going through what I went through two years and three months ago."

Investigators tell us part of the conditions of Deandre Gray's bond included wearing an ankle monitor and a curfew. They say when Gray was taken into custody, he was not wearing his ankle monitor. Investigators with Brazoria County tell us questions as to why he wasn't wearing his monitor will be left for probation officers and the district attorney's office to answer.

"The state should have did a better job of keeping track of people that have ankle monitors," Mosley said.

Gray's bond has been set at $1 million and he is currently being held in the Brazoria County Jail. Gray is not only facing murder charges but investigators tell us he is also facing additional charges from Thursday night's chase, including endangering a child.

Planned Surfside beach party sparks concerns

SURFSIDE, TX (KTRK) -- The promise of a party on the beach has neighbors in Surfside scared for their safety.

It was not that long ago that this sleepy beach side village turned chaotic. There were a lot of cars leading into town, as far as the eye could see. Some residents tell horror stories from Easter weekend and now they're fearing a repeat.

Pirates Alley Cafe banks on weekend business, so losing an entire Saturday just doesn't cut it, especially since they already lost one last month.

"It was bad. It was crazy," restaurant manager Stephen Marsden said.

It was Easter weekend. Thousands flooded the island for a massive party promoted on social media, and the cafe was forced to close.

"People were in fear of their lives, honestly because they couldn't walk out of the house or say anything because of fear of something bad happening," Marsden said.

Law enforcement was overwhelmed, businesses under siege and when it was all over, 26-year-old Derrick Milam and two others had been shot, Milam fatally.

"Everybody was scared. They were totally scared," Longtime Surfside resident Donn Ebarb said.

Ebarb had never seen anything like it.

"Solid lights coming into our town," Ebarb said.

And hopes to never see it again, though now he's worried about the ads online promoting yet another big party. This one will be a biker beach bash. Surfside police are gearing up and locals are hoping they learned some lessons.

"We don't want another episode of what happened on that one Saturday," Ebarb said.

The Surfside police chief say they've canceled the reservation for the beach house that the promoter had rented for this weekend and they plan to barricade the street that it's on. He also says the city won't issue permits for entertainment and he plans to triple his police force this weekend and is meeting the with the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office on Thursday to strategize.

He says the party won't happen, although online, it looks like almost 300 people have made RSVPs so far and those ads are still acti

Victim identified in fatal shooting at rave party at southeast Houston house

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The victim killed at a rave at a house in southeast Houston has been identified. He was just 18 years old and about to graduate from high school.

The family of Ryan Spikes of Cypress told Eyewitness News they are just devastated right now and they want some answers. They tell us they want to know who shot the teen and left him to die on the street.

"We're not taking it good at all; not good at all. This is heartbreaking," said Tiffany Spikes, the victim's sister.

Tiffany's 18-year-old brother, Ryan, was killed early Wednesday morning. The Cypress Springs High School senior and athlete was shot outside a huge rave-style party at a vacant house in the 4400 block of Allison. The gunman is still on the run.

"We just hope in Jesus' name that somebody will come forward and just be truthful about it. If it's hindering their heart, come forth or turn themselves in, or if anybody know anything, call TIPS," Tiffany said.

We've learned between 300 and 600 teenagers and Spring Breakers attended the chaotic party which was highly advertised across social media sites. Houston police say officers responded to the scene after reports of loud noise. As police and security tried breaking up the huge crowd, police say they heard gunshots. Ryan's family told us he had no enemies.

"Lord Jesus, my brother was humble. He barely spoke or talk. He was never was in no mess, never fought," said Tiffany.

Witnesses say several people were shooting. Police say they tried chasing down one gunman, but he got away. Now Tiffany and her family are pleading for answers.

We checked with Houston police. They told us detectives are still interviewing witnesses. For now, police and Ryan's family are encouraging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

In light of the shooting, there will be a community meeting on Monday night. It will be held at the Cullen Missionary Baptist Church at 6:30pm. Councilwoman Wanda Adams will be there along with Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland. The goal of the meeting is to talk about ways to prevent something like this from happening again in the community.

One killed at rave party in southeast Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A killer is on the run after a shooting at party that police say got out of control. Hundreds of teenagers were reportedly at the party, all crammed into a vacant house in southeast Houston.

It happened at a home on Allison near Cullen. Police were on the scene investigating for several hours after the massive Spring Break foam party advertised on social media turned into a deadly shooting.

Willie Armstrong, 19, and a group of friends were among what Houston police say was anywhere from 300 to 600 or more teens and college students all crowded in the house.

Party-goers tell Eyewitness News it was a massive bubbles and foam party. But around midnight, after calls from several neighbors, police, including off-duty HPD officers working security, shut the party down.

"Then about 30 minutes later all hell broke loose -- gunfire," said neighbor Amos Miles.

Police say there were several people firing. Witnesses say bullets were coming from everywhere.

"Like 10 over here, three over here, six over there," said witness Fredrick Johnson.

That's when Armstrong, who was running from gunshots, looked up and saw one of the gunmen.

"He was just walking and then he just pulled out a gun and started shooting," he said.

Then he saw the gunman fire at a teen.

"He shot that boy in the back of the head and he fell on the ground by the car. He was just laying there," Armstrong said.

HPD says as the suspect took off officers tried to detain him, but he got away.

"He started shooting at the police, too, because I guess the police had seen him," said Armstrong.

It's said to be the fourth rave style party at what was built as an assisted living facility 12 years ago. It went through foreclosure and the ownership is murky. The builder says it is bank property, but it is not abandoned. Instead it's believed to be a business again -- a party venue that brings hundreds of cars down a two lane country road and more.

A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, recalled, "The last mansion party they had out here I was trying to keep out of my yard and they said, 'Hey, can we put our weed in your mailbox?' And I said absolutely not."

Police are now trying to contact the promoter and trying to find out who the property owner is.

"It's a tragedy. It's a loss," said Miles. "Somebody lost their child which could have been avoided."

The victim died at the hospital and hasn't been idenfitied. The shooting suspect remains at large.
