Mom of boy mauled by pit bulls speaks out

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We are learning more about the serious injuries a young Crosby boy suffered after being attacked by two pit bulls near his home one week ago. His mother says he may be in the hospital until the end of summer.

Mario Lopez will undergo a fourth surgery on Friday at Memorial Hermann Hospital. The 10-year-old is alert and his mother says he remembers practically every detail about that frightening dog attack. The picture of Mario Lopez in his football uniform is a stark contrast to the image of the boy wrapped in hospital bandages after two neighborhood pit bull mixes got loose and viciously attacked him last week. The boy from Crosby is no stranger to pit bulls -- he has two of his own. "He's bored. He's very depressed, but he's doing a lot better and I keep telling him he will get back to normal," said his mother DeAnn Lopez. The bites all over his body are so bad, Lopez isn't convinced her son will ever play football again. "He's got huge chunks missing all over his arms and legs," she said. Doctors at Memorial Hermann Hospital have operated on Mario three times and managed to reattach his ear. His mother calls them miracle workers. "Everything is really healing well. They took their time with that and his head looks really good," she said. The two dogs dug their way out from a newly constructed fenced-in enclosure and attacked Mario as he rode his bicycle through the neighborhood. The owners are facing criminal charges for failing to properly secure their pets. DeAnn says her son recalls almost everything about the incident. He knows two women saved his life by pulling the dogs off of him, but he can't remember what they look like. She and her son are eternally grateful. "I mean, I'll be there for them the rest of their lives... for what they've done," she said. She plans to personally thank those two neighbors. The two dogs who attacked Mario remain under quarantine until Sunday night. They can be returned back to the owners after that unless a court order is issued. At this point, it's unclear if the owners plan to reclaim them. (Copyright ©2011 KTRK-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.)

Fire destroys youth sports league field house

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- The season may be over, but the heartache is just beginning for a youth sports league after fire destroys their property in Pasadena.

The only fortunate element of this story is the timing. Although sectional playoffs are now underway, the spring season for the league is long over, and that leaves the Pasadena group with a lot of donations to raise before the fall season begins.

The pictures posted on the Pasadena Pee-Wee League's website show players and family, the heart of any team. The field house and concession stand aren't shown, and on Thursday, it was too late to capture it as it once was.

"Our garage where we stored our pitching machines, our lawn mowers, ladders, it's all gone," Pasadena Pee-Wee League President Ray Valenzuela said.

At 3am, the Pasadena Fire Department was called to Strawberry Park. The two-story building was reduced to only one as the roof collapsed. The building was destroyed, along with everything inside.

"We do have a roof collapsed. We had to bring out some machinery so that we can get the roof off of some of the other structures so that we can actually make entry to do an investigation and to run our dogs," Pasadena Fire Marshal David Brannon said.

The dog is trained to detect accelerant. Investigators are collecting evidence to determine whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set.

But for Valenzuela, the cause is secondary to the result.

"I was out there this morning and I did tear up watching, and I've been telling my son all day long I feel like I lost something," he said.

Somewhere in all the debris are trophies spanning 40 years of kids playing baseball on the field that can't be replaced. It's what Valenzuela's son remembers from his first games.

"Every time I go up there, I see baseball stuff like equipment and everything and it reminds me of playing here," former player Ray Valenzuela Jr. said.

But it's more than memories. All the concession equipment that helped feed the fans is gone, along with computers and backup equipment for players who can't afford their own.

The team will have to replace all that, and all-star player "Panchito" Guerrero plans to help.

"Try to get money and support this stuff and try to get back all this stuff," Guerrero said.

The building itself is owned by the city of Pasadena. The fire chief says it will eventually be replaced, but the league has to provide everything inside.

Family of drowning victims sues Texas City

See it on TV? Check here. TEXAS CITY, TX (KTRK) -- With summer in full effect, the Texas City Dike is a popular place to get some sun and cool down. But one day after the drowning of a five-year-old boy there, Texas City is being sued. The lawsuit claims the city knows the beach is dangerous, and even deadly, but is doing nothing about it.

The Suarez family filed the lawsuit on Thursday. The city says it added a sign to the entrance of the Texas City Dike, but it came after the family's tragedy. Now the family's attorney says a sign isn't enough. "Words can't describe what they've been going through," said Jimmy Doan, the family's attorney. It was an unbearable loss for the Suarez family last fall when they arrived at the Texas City Dike for a family outing. Nine-year-old twins Alexandra and Samantha went into the water and immediately got into trouble. Their father Hector drowned while trying to save them. The family says there were no signs or warning of the dangers. "The city's contention is well the parents should have watched, they should have had life jackets. Every parent wants to protect their child, but sometimes the dangers are not obvious," Doan said. "And in Texas City, when people go to the Texas City Dike, they're not aware of how dangerous this beach is." The dike had just reopened following two years of Hurricane Ike repairs. The city says signs had not been posted but were added to the entrance of the dike after the Suarez drownings. "I don't think that it's something that means that no one else could ever use the ocean because there's been a tragedy. I'm very sorry for the family, but I really don't think there's any responsibility for the city because it's an inherently dangerous and case law says that oceans are inherently dangerous,"Texas City Attorney Carla Cotropia said. Damage from the hurricane can still be seen at the dike. Attorneys for the Suarez family say they believe conditions there changed once it reopened but the city disputes their claim. Cops make big pot bust in Montgomery Co.

PORTER, TX (KTRK) -- Police in Porter made a huge drug bust late yesterday. They pulled over an 18-wheeler with a shipment of fruit, but stuffed inside, they also found more than 2,300 pounds of marijuana.

At first search, the load in that big rig looked normal with pallets of mangos, limes, and other fruit. But a more detailed search revealed thick black packages that turned out to be a lot of marijuana.

A Montgomery County law enforcement officer saw the big rig stalled along Highway 59 and Northpark yesterday around 5pm. After speaking with the driver, authorities say the officer became suspicious and with consent to search the truck, found about 2,500 pounds of packaged marijuana.

The pot was tucked away and mixed in with boxes of produce. The Montgomery County district attorney estimates the drugs' street value at $2.5 million.

"What we are trying to do is go to the source and find out where it came from, perhaps where it was going to," said Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon. "So the combined agencies will continue their investigation. Hopefully it will result in a successful prosecution."

The drugs were seized. The unidentified driver was arrested and will be booked into the Montgomery County jail.

As for the fruit, the district attorney says it will likely be donated or thrown out.
