Astros to announce new manager in press conference

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Astros organization is expected to announce its pick for manager this morning.

A press conference is scheduled for ten. Owner and Chairman Jim Crane, GM Jeff Luhnow and team President George Postolos will all be in attendance.

Nationals third base coach Bo Porter is expected to get the job. The Houston resident should finish the season in Washington before taking up the reins. The Astros' young team has struggled but management hopes to be in contention in a few years.

"We don't want to hire someone to just be here for one phase of it. We want someone who can grow with the players, grow with the organization and help us sustain success once we get there," said Luhnow.

Management had a short list of nine possible coaches.

FBI holds job fair at HCC Conference Center

See it on TV? Check here. HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The FBI is on a nationwide hunt for people who speak foreign languages, anything from Spanish to Somali to Pashto.

In America's most diverse city, a job fair asking for people who speak foreign languages brings out more job applicants than anywhere else in the country.

"Houston is a very populated city, a very diverse city," said John Tolarski with the FBI.

The FBI Friday held a job fair at Houston Community College, a search for people fluent in other languages to help crack crime. In the first hour and a half, more than 200 people had come through the doors. About 500 total showed up to a similar job fair in New York City recently.

"After I read the requirements in the Internet, it sounded emotional, interesting," said Patty Herrera, who speaks Spanish.

The requirements: fluency in another language, U.S. citizenship, and a clean background check.

"We're responsible for protecting the United States whether from terrorist organizations, large-scale criminal enterprises, the Mexican cartels," said Tolarski.

Many people heard about the job fair through foreign language media.

"The information I got was from this Chinese newspaper, talk about FBI recruiting," said David Shieh, who speaks Chinese.

For some, like Shieh, it's an opportunity to serve the country where he's lived for decades, using the three Chinese dialects he speaks.

And for others, like Azar Usman, it's also part of a job hunt. The Urdu-speaking engineer lost his job five months ago.

"I was looking for a job and it looked like a good opportunity for me," Usman said.

They won't find out for months if they got the job, but if they do it's a chance to help the FBI adapt to change and keep America safe.

"I have to serve the country. That's how I feel," said Usman.

The FBI is looking for US citizens who speak another language fluently, who have lived in the US for the past few years and who can pass a strict background check. Friday's job fair ended at 5pm. There is another job fair in Dallas on June 16, and you can apply online, at www.fbijobs.gov.

Parent accused of showing gun clip, threatening teacher during on-campus conference

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The mother of a student at Marshall Middle School is facing charges after allegedly threatening to use a gun to settle a dispute with school administrators.

According to HISD, Lori Cotton-Noel came to the school on Thursday to meet with the assistant principal about what the district calls an alleged incident. HISD says Cotton-Noel apparently grew angry, displayed a gun clip and threatened to use a firearm.

School police were called and now charges have been filed against Cotton-Noel.

Eyewitness News spoke with her husband who says one of his children has been bullied at Marshall consistently, even threatened with being shot by other students, and he says the administration has failed to address it. On Thursday, they were going to another conference to ask for help.

"She just wanted to let it be known, just like they're threatening my daughter with shotguns and pistols and spraying mace in her face, when they made one shotgun, they did not stop making them," he told Eyewitness News.

He claims there was not a direct threat made by his wife against the administrator.

Cotton-Noel, 40, came to school Friday afternoon to pick up her kids. Instead, she learned in a letter sent home to school parents that she'd been charged with a felony.

Students were sent home with letters to parents notifying them of this incident, saying in part, "Ensuring the safety of each of our students is one of our main priorities, and in this case, the safety of the students was never compromised. While we believe this is an isolated incident, we want to remind all of our students and parents about the importance of appropriate behavior at all times, especially while on our campus."

HISD says Cotton-Noel has been banned from all HISD campuses.
