Man tries to escape police by swimming in bayou

AP  GALVESTON, TX -- A Galveston man is in custody after trying to elude police by swimming through a bayou.

Officers tried to stop Shane Thomas Kerr at a Galveston apartment complex Thursday night. The 26-year-old Kerr allegedly got out of his car and jumped into nearby Greens Bayou. Police say he tried climbing a nearby hill and then re-entered the bayou before running in another direction.

Police eventually were able to talk Kerr into surrendering.

He's charged with evading arrest and was being held Saturday on a warrant related to a separate marijuana possession charge.

Jail officials Saturday did not have an attorney listed for Kerr.

Big alligator spotted in Sims Bayou

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- SkyEye 13 HD caught some amazing pictures of a big alligator cooling off in a local bayou on Thursday morning.

The gator was spotted swimming in Sims Bayou near I-45 and Park Place. You could see a few people walking along the bank taking pictures a safe distance away.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, they get more reports of gator sightings between the months of March and May because they prefer sunny mild days.

At last check, everyone just let this gator go on its way.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating an apparent traffic accident after a body was discovered in Buffalo Bayou.

Police say it appears a motorcycle rider was traveling east on Memorial Drive at a very high rate of speed when he lost control. The motorcycle flew over the curb, hitting the ground once before striking a tree. The vehicle broke into pieces, with some continuing airborne into the bayou.

A boat crew cleaning the bayou discovered the victim in the water around the 2400 block of Memorial Drive near Sawyer at about 10am. It is believed the accident occurred sometime shortly after the victim left his home around midnight.

The 31-year-old victim's identity has not been released.

Police rescue woman after car plunges in bayou

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police and emergency crews rescued a woman after her vehicle crashed into Buffalo Bayou near downtown Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 4pm at Commerce and Milam. Authorities say the woman was driving down Commerce near Milam plowed straight through the guardrail and into the water.

"I was sitting on the bridge and I just see the car just drive over the edge of the bridge," one witness told us. "The car hit the water, the body flew out."

Several officers near the scene were able to pull the woman out of the water moments after the incident.

"When we crawled down the enbankment, we saw the lady floating in the bayou face down so we just went in there and grabbed her and started CPR on her, and we were able to revive her I think," Houston Police Department Officer Rene Caulderon said.

The woman was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. She is listed in critical condition.

And while it may have been all in a day's work for the officers, it was a scene eyewitnesses will never forget.

"An unexpected occurrence -- a car driving over the edge of a bridge. That, you don't see that every day. So you just feel for the person and hope they are all right," the witness said.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident.

Road crews put a temporary guardrail to replace the one through which the woman smashed.
