UPS delivery driver robbed of packages at gunpoint

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- December is a hectic time for the UPS, delivering Christmas presents all over the country. And now, sadly they've become targets for Grinches armed with guns.

Authorities are searching for a gunman who held up a UPS delivery man and demanded packages. He may as well have been swiping people's presents from right under the Christmas tree. It happened Thursday morning in the Spring-Cypress area.

With the holiday season at hand, UPS drivers have their hands and brown trucks full, and UPS tells Eyewitness News that on Thursday morning an armed robber saw a target.

According to UPS, one of its delivery drivers was working in the Spring-Cypress area when he was approached by an armed gunman who robbed the delivery truck. UPS says the suspect was able to get away with the packages.

"He ought to be ashamed of himself because he has deprived someone else from receiving what they were supposed to receive," said resident Ruben Braziel.

Another neighbor hopes those stolen boxes were not meant for her address, and says she hopes the crime won't steal the joy out of someone's Christmas.

"Very, very sad that they would do that, and not have the consideration for the person that not only who bought them, but the person that is going to receive them," Patti said.

UPS says the driver was not hurt and returned to work shortly after the incident.

Woman caught with heroin in powdered juice mix packages in her luggage at IAH

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A foreign woman traveling through Bush Intercontinental Airport has been arrested for allegedly concealing heroin in her luggage.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Monica Leticia Morales de Guzman attempted to import approximately three kilograms of heroin into the U.S. as she arrived on September 7 to IAH from Guatemala en route to Boston, MA.

Authorities say the 27-year-old Guatemalan woman presented a valid Guatemalan passport, a valid U.S. Visa and her Customs Declaration Form. She was referred to secondary inspection to undergo baggage examination, at which time Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers say they located the heroin after a canine alerted to the presence of narcotics on her luggage.

Located in a shopping bag inside her pink suitcase, officers say they discovered nine packages of powdered juice mix which concealed pink plastic bags containing a total of 2.994 kilograms of heroin, according to the complaint.

The case is being investigated by CBP and Homeland Security Investigations.

FBI investigating suspicious packages at Crockett and Bush elementary schools

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Envelopes with a mysterious white powder inside were sent to two local elementary schools yesterday. The FBI is now looking for a possible connection between the two incidents.

Field tests on the substance came back negative for any hazardous substance, but the FBI will do some additional testing.

Emergency crews and the FBI were called out to Crockett Elementary School in the First Ward yesterday morning, and then to Bush Elementary School in far west Houston in the afternoon. In both cases, an envelope with a suspicious substance inside was sent to the school.

At Crockett, a administrative assistant opened an envelope in an office area of the school and saw a powder-like substance inside. As a precaution, the office area was isolated and the air conditioning turned off. Students were kept in their classes during the investigation, but were not evacuated.

The scene was cleared about an hour later and there was said to be no danger to students.

Then yesterday afternoon, a suspicious substance was found in an envelope at Bush Elementary School in west Houston at around 1pm. HISD police and HFD are investigating.

According to the FBI, they will perform further tests to determine if it's the same substance that was found in other envelopes around Texas this week.

Students took letters home to their parents yesterday informing them that a white powder was sent in envelopes to their schools.

HISD sent out an email alert to its principals yesterday afternoon.

"Fortunately, the principal here at Bush read that email and as she was checking her mail, came across a letter that seemed to meet the description of what the others had looked like, so she immediately put it down; she did not open it. She cut off the air conditioning in the school, according to procedure," said HISD Spokesperson Jason Spencer.

School at Bush Elementary let out at the regular time Wednesday, although parents arrived to find a HazMat truck parked in front.

There were no injuries, but obviously a lot of parents were concerned.

This is the third such incident in the last year and a half. Last May, a white substance was found in a letter at John Paul II Catholic School in west Houston, but it turned out to be harmless silicone. In October 2010, more than a dozen HISD campuses found envelopes with a white powder inside.

Other Texas schools affected today, yesterday

Seven schools and a church in the Dallas area received white powder filled envelopes yesterday and today. This morning, the administrator of a Dallas preschool opened a powder-filled letter. The administrator put the letter in a plastic bag and called 911.

The administrator was taken to the hospital for observation. Ten staff members and a class full of children ages three to five years old were evacuated from the school as a precaution.

"They weren't exposed to anything, but it's only because we don't have another classroom to put them in here at this facility; we have to go ahead and send them home today," said Gayle Nave, Executive Director of Mi Escuelita Preschool.

On Tuesday, five schools and a church in five different Dallas area cities received threatening letters with what turned out to be non life-threatening powder. It's not known if the North Texas and Houston cases are related.

Shipping companies busy delivering packages during holidays

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you think you have a lot to get finished before the holidays, imagine working for a parcel delivery service where tens of millions of packages still have to get to their destinations on time.

Leroy Moses has worked for FedEx for 21 years. He drives for FedEx Express Delivery. He loves his job, he says, especially on days like today.

"The holidays, the whole week is tough," Moses said.

Package after package, Moses drives and scans and delivers.

"You get in a mindset where you been doing it a long time, so there's nothing to it. Just get out here and do it," he said.

And Thursday is the day this year when more packages get delivered than any other day.

"We come in early and get off late," Moses said.

FedEx says this is the busiest season in its history, already breaking its single day delivery record earlier this month at more than 17 million packages. It seems, despite the economy, people still want to give.

"People still finding money to shop and to buy toys, to buy gifts. And that's the best part about it," Moses said.

UPS is also finding Thursday its busiest of the year for ground deliveries. Friday is its busiest day for air. The company has hired an additional 56,000 seasonal employees to help get everything delivered.

"We're gonna do over 26 million packages today. That's roughly a 60 percent increase over what we'd normally handle on a typical day in terms of delivery. It takes a team effort and we have a lot of fun this time of year," UPS employee Shane Boyles said.

It's almost as much fun probably as the people on the receiving end of all of those packages.

UPS company expects to deliver 25 million packages Thursday -- that's 300 packages per second. On a standard business day, they usually deliver 15.6 million.

This week, they've added 400 additional flights per day.

Man accused of stealing packages from doorsteps

Police say they learned that Jerry Louis had changed his appearance by coloring his hair and shaving off his beard after seeing himself during the news broadcast.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Spring man has been arrested, accused of stealing packages from the doorsteps of at least one residence in West University Place.

After Eyewitness News aired surveillance video captured from a home security camera showing the suspect taking a package from the homeowner's front porch, West U. police say they received several Crime Stoppers tips and individual calls about the suspect's identity, as well as other incidents of theft he allegedly committed. Police then located mug shots of the suspect to compare to the video footage and, through the suspect's parole officer, were able to identify Jerry Wayne Louis as the man in the video.

Investigators say they learned of Louis' location and the fact that he had changed his appearance by coloring his hair and shaving off his beard after seeing himself during the news broadcast. Officers located Louis as he was leaving his home driving a rental vehicle. Louis was stopped by authorities and taken into custody.

Louis, 47, is charged with theft. He was on parole until 2044 and has a history of theft, burglary and assault.
