Woman gives child to CPS, gets charged with abuse

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston couple is accused in the alleged abuse of a four-year-old girl left in their care.

On August 13, Eutha Nicole Oliver reportedly took the little girl to Children's Protective Services and told officials there she was turning over a child who had been left in her care. Court documents state that an ambulance then took the little girl to Memorial Hermann Hospital because she was suffering pelvic fractures as well as other bruises and injuries.

The girl reportedly told police that Oliver kicked and stomped on her, and whipped her with a belt on numerous occasions. The girl said the abuse began shortly after she arrived at Oliver's home on August 3 and continued daily until she was taken to CPS. She also told police that Oliver's husband did nothing to stop the abuse.

Oliver's husband, Shawn Conery Carter, told police no abuse ever happened at his home, that the girl arrived with some of the injuries, and inflicted some of the bruises on herself while she was there. He added that he and Oliver had even considering adopting the little girl, according to court documents.

Oliver is charged with injury to a child and Carter is charged with injury to a child by omission.

Couple gives Houston waiter $5,000 tip

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- While most people had three days off this weekend for Memorial Day, one waiter is very glad he was working.

That's because one of his customers left a tip of more than 18,000 percent.

"I'm just humbled by it, that's all," D'Amicos Italian Cafe waiter Greg Rubar said.

Rubar still can't believe how his bad luck turned into good fortune.

"I think it was three or four weeks ago, it was a Friday night, it was raining really hard," he said.

Rubar was heading home a few weeks ago when high water ruined his car.

"The way I work, hours I work, it was very hard to take the bus, I was taking a cab a lot," he said.

Rubar has worked at D'Amicos for 16 years and one couple in particular have become very good customers over the past eight years. Rubar told them about his car problem but never expected what would happen this past Saturday.

"They just came in and gave me money to buy a car, told me to go buy a car with it," Rubar said.

Those longtime customers gave Rubar an envelope, filled with $5,000 in cash.

"It's enough money to go buy you a nice car. I didn't even look at it. I was hesitant about it, but he said, 'No you take it and buy you a car!'" Rubar said. "People can be generous, you know? They told me they felt like I deserved this."

Rubar says no one has ever done anything like this for him. His boss is overwhelmed at the generosity of the two customers.

"And also that we have staff that our customers feel so close to that they could willingly and wantingly do something like that for them," the restaurant's VP Brina D'Amicos said.

Rubar says another customer is helping him select a used vehicle to buy. He also has a message for his two special friends.

"Thank you very, very much. I mean I did need it and I'm gonna buy a car with it; that's what that money's gonna go to -- every cent," he said.

The two customers wish to remain anonymous. Rubar has not seen them since they gave him the money. Rubar says he plans to get his new vehicle soon.

HISD gives initial approval for more class time

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Students at 10 HISD middle and high schools would see slightly longer school days under a policy that received preliminary approval Thursday night from the HISD school board.

The policy requires all schools to adopt a minimum 7-hour, 15-minute daily schedule.

Only 10 HISD schools currently meet at least seven hours per day but less than the proposed 7-hour, 15-minute schedule.

Girl, 7, gives boys run for their money on baseball diamond

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A local seven-year-old is proving she can flex her athletic muscle anywhere from the ballet studio to the Little League field.

Emma Poirot loves sports. She's just as comfortable wearing a leotard for ballet or gymnastics as she is wearing a helmet on the diamond.

Emma's big brother played baseball, so she started playing, too. She quickly earned the respect of the boys on team.

"She plays great. She hits the ball good," said teammate Chad Russo.

"Her own teammate stole her hat one time. She chased him down and tackled him to get it back," said Emma's mother, Marla. "There haven't been any issues since then."

Emma also plays soccer and basketball. The only sport she doesn't have any interest in is football.

New Caney ISD gives teachers bonus checks

  NEW CANEY, TX (KTRK) -- The New Caney school district on Friday handed out special checks aimed at helping the morale of district employees.

District administrators and school board trustees handed out $600 checks to all full-time district workers. Last July, the school board passed a resolution regarding these checks, during a time of uncertainty about state education funding.

"We didn't give any raises last year,. So we're really excited about giving this lump sum payment to our employees for a job well done," New Caney ISD Superintendent Kenn Franklin said.

Those who received the checks had to have been employed at least 90 days and still employed today.

Gas station gives away free gas in east Houston

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Shell gas station in east Houston gave away free gas to hundreds of lucky motorists Wednesday morning to promote its new gasoline.

The free gas giveaway was held at the Shell station at 5100 block of Lockwood Drive from 7:30am to 8:30am. Drivers got up to 15 gallons of the new Shell gas product for free.

It's part of a promotion Shell is having at gas stations nationwide.

HFD gives away thousands of toys to needy kids

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Toys collected by the Houston Fire Department are going out to thousands of needy local children.

The toys are being given way at the New Light Christian Center in northeast Houston. The center began distributing toys at 8am Thursday morning and will continue doing so until they hand out every toy. The fire department told us firefighters are still picking up last minute donations for the giveaway.

HFD has received more than 30,000 donated toys and several generous monetary donations to buy toys this year.
