Condition of Bay City woman shot by spouse upgraded

See it on TV? Check here. AP  BAY CITY, TX -- Police say a Texas woman shot by her husband has been upgraded to serious condition and she's aware that he killed their four children.

Bay City police on Monday said Laura Gonzalez, who was wounded by Jose Avila-Alva before he shot their youngsters and killed himself, remains hospitalized.

Lt. Andrew Lewis says the revolver used by Avila-Alva last Wednesday was reported stolen in 2010 to Port Arthur police.

Police say Avila-Alva was in the U.S. illegally, after being deported to Mexico in 2006.

A coroner has identified the children, believed to be age 5 and younger, as Daniel Gonzalez, Sean Gonzalez, Cecilia Gonzalez and Miguel Gonzalez. Lewis could not confirm their specific ages.

Bay City is 65 miles southwest of Houston.

Suspected drunk driver in critical condition

See it on TV? Check here.   CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- A suspected drunken driver Sunday morning hit a row of mailboxes and a fence before slamming into a utility pole near Conroe this morning.

According to investigators, a man was driving south on F.M. 1314 when he went off the road to the left and hit the mailboxes, then drove through a ditch and the sign for a church.

Officials said he then crossed another road, hit a fence, and then struck a utility pole.

A fence post became lodged in his chest and he was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A passenger in his car suffered only minor injuries, officials said.

The accident knocked out power to several homes. State troopers say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
