Car smashes into Bellaire house

BELLAIRE, TX (KTRK) -- Work to secure a house seriously damaged when a car nearly drove through it continued Wednesday night.

It happened late Wednesday afternoon in Bellaire on the corner of Ferris and Linden.

Contractors worked well past dark to build a brand new fence at the home. At 12 feet tall, it will offer more security than the old one, but it's not how 81-year-old Obsburn Davis envisioned he'd get it.

"He hit hard to do the damage," he said.

Davis and his bed-ridden wife were inside their home when the white car came barreling into their garage.

"All of a sudden, I hear an explosion," he said.

The impact slammed his car into the wall, ripping it away from the house and exposing the attic.

"I'm in that garage a lot," Davis said.

Fortunately today he was in the kitchen away from the tools he often tinkers with.

Bellaire police say this was the result of an accident about a block away. The white sedan had been hit by a truck, continued down Ferris and ended up in the house. The driver was rushed to the hospital.

They had to cut him out. They had to put him on a stretcher," witness Peggy Harkless said.

Bellaire police have yet to determine why the car traveled so far away from the first accident so fast.

"He may have suffered some injuries from the first impact. He may have had medical problems. He may have had some other issues. I don't know," Sgt. Daniel Kerr with Bellaire police said.

Meanwhile, the damage quickly became an attraction. While Davis indulged us, he was anxious to no longer be the center of attention.

"It ain't good," he said, laughing.

The crash remains under investigation.
