Salvation Army hosts holiday lunch at shelter

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houstonians with nowhere else to go for Christmas found a home at the Salvation Army.

The group hosted a holiday lunch at its shelter for homeless women and families near downtown Houston.

Everyone was invited to enjoy a homemade meal of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings.

The Salvation Army also held a lunch at its men's shelter to serve hundreds of others in need.

HISD to vote on increasing lunch prices

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- On Thursday Houston ISD trustees will vote to increase the price of lunch, with milk to $2.25. Right now that same meal costs $1.85.

For children who buy lunch every school day, the 40-cent increase will cost them $72 more a year. This increase will not impact those who get free or reduced lunches, which is 80 percent of HISD's student population. One thing trustees won't vote on Thursday morning is closing Love, Grimes, Rhoads and McDade elementary schools, but that's not good news. Trustees have delayed that vote because they are now considering closing or consolidating elementary schools with fewer than 400 students and middle schools with fewer than 500 students. In the next few weeks the district will hold community meetings to discuss this proposal. (Copyright ©2011 KTRK-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.)
