Cy-Fair ISD postpones launch of sex-ed program

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We have a new update about a controversial sex education in the Cy-Fair Independent School District.

The district is now telling parents it will wait to begin its new sex-ed curriculim until next year.

Last week, we told you that parents were upset over a new curriculum for seventh and eighth graders that discussed topics like contraceptives and sex.

Cy-Fair ISD says this will give them time to review and evaluate the program.

HISD to launch Parent Super Centers

HOUSTON -- The Houston Independent School District and Microsoft are partnering to launch new Parent Super Centers across the district in an effort to promote parent engagement on campus.

"Research shows that increased parent engagement on campus leads to increased academic performance of students," said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier. "HISD is committed to providing resources on campus to help parents become more involved in their children's education."

Each new HISD Parent Super Center will have 12 desktop computers fully loaded with the latest version of Microsoft Office, internet access, laser printers and other software.

"In today's digital world it's essential for parents, students and members of the community to have access to technology, which is why we are delighted to partner with HISD," said Lori Aulds, Microsoft's education sales director. "Microsoft has been and will always be committed to providing people with the training, education and tools needed to improve their digital literacy skills and grow in today's economy."

In addition, parents will receive computer training through Parent Engagement and curriculum provided by Microsoft to help them be computer savvy and master basic computer skills.

These centers will be available for parents to use before and after school, during summer school and on Saturdays during tutorials.

Harris Co. to launch probe into Port of Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's major fallout from our 13 Undercover investigation into spending at the Port of Houston. There's word of a major investigation underway. Tonight the Harris County attorney's office is creating an investigative task force to make sure the port isn't cheating Harris County taxpayers.

For weeks, we've been investigating how taxpayer money is being spent by some members of the Port's top brass. We've exposed possible ethics violations, conflicts of interest and questionable spending.

Last night on Eyewitness News, we told you that questions raised by our stories now have the fate of both Port Chairman Jim Edmonds and President Alec Dreyer in question.

According to Terry O'Rourke with the county attorney's office, Republican county commissioners Jack Morman and Steve Radack have pushed for the investigation after watching our stories. Commissioner Radack has been raising questions about the Port's legal bills for months. There's apparently outrage by some county leaders who have had to lay off workers when they learned the Port has a $200 million surplus in cash and short term investments.

Last year the county had to pay less of its debt, because taxpayers were required to pay for the Port's increasing debt. Since 2006, taxpayer payments have nearly doubled to $53 million.
