Barbers Hill school board to discuss getting rid of paddling

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Tonight, the Barbers Hill school board will discuss getting rid of corporal punishment after a boy was brutally paddled.

Christina Douty says she gave permission for teachers at Barbers Hill Middle School to administer corporal punishment to her son. But when he came home with welts on his rear for making bad grades, she changed her mind.

She now says corporal punishment should be abolished statewide. The school district says district policies were followed in Douty's case.

Tonight's meeting starts at 6:30pm.

Are prom dresses getting too sexy?

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- This year, the theme for prom dresses seems to be less fabric and more skin. So much so that some Houston-area schools are going to new lengths to make sure the dresses are appropriate.

It's a theme shared by most parents of teenage girls.

"You shouldn't wear a dress that if you bend over, you show what God gave you," one parent told us.

But this prom season, girls are daring to wear dresses inspired by the catwalk, Hollywood celebrities. And get this, prom dresses even are copied off the dance costumes you see on prime time TV.

"It's not supposed to be taken literally, it's for film, it's for TV presence," stylist Stevie Bingham said. "It's not supposed to actually be worn at a high school prom."

In dress shops and stores all across Houston, battle lines are being drawn.

"Prom is supposed to be, this is your last chance, you need to show 'em what you got," senior Sophia Heding said.

We found Heding trying on a few prom dresses for her father, who was laying down the law.

But this year, parents aren't the only ones implementing strict prom dress rules.

HISD says each of its nearly 40 high schools creates its own prom dress code. Chavez High School administrators say their rules are plain and simple.

"We don't want them to show too much cleavage and too much sides and the back it should not go below the waist," assistant principal Reesa Turner said.

For short dresses, students must follow the finger rule.

"As long as the dress comes right here, at the tip of her finger then that's an appropriate length," Turner said.

Some parents feel schools should go back to the rule known as "the floor test," where you kneel down and if your dress doesn't touch the floor, it's out of prom dress code.

But when it is too short, too tight or shows too much skin, who's really responsible for policing the rules -- the parents or the schools?

"I think the parents," one parent told us.

"The parents, they are the ones that are paying for it, they're the ones that can say," another parent said.

"I think its parents No. 1. That's my own opinion. I'm not going to let my daughter go out in something that I haven't approved of," a third parent said.

School officials we spoke to say they're aware that the styles are sexier than ever; so, this year, they're hoping to work with parents, making sure prom season is full of good memories and good taste.

Heding's father says he couldn't agree more.

"She is 19. She is grown, in a sense, but, like I said, this is her last 'hurrah' that she may have to hear my mouth about anyway," he said jokingly.

If you're battling what's appropriate for prom with your daughter, we've got some expert advice from a Houston family therapist.

Ex-death row inmate Brandley not getting comp cash

AP  HOUSTON -- A Houston-area man wrongly convicted in the 1980 killing of a 16-year-old girl has been denied money from a state fund set up to compensate freed inmates.

The Clarence Brandley case helped lead to establishment of the fund.

The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday that Brandley last week learned his claim over improper imprisonment came too late. Brandley's request also lacked a pardon or a court ruling declaring him innocent.

Brandley was released from death row in 1990 after an appeals court ruled he did not get a fair trial and threw out his conviction for the slaying of Cheryl Dee Fergeson at Conroe High School during a volleyball tournament. Brandley was a janitor.

His lawyers claimed racism. The teen was white. Brandley is black.

Prosecutors later dropped charges against Brandley.

Houston Real Estate - Getting to Know the Region

Houston is booming right now. While the rest of the country languishes in an economic slowdown, Houston forages ahead, thanks to a strong oil and gas industry presence. Real estate in Houston is also doing similarly well, making it a hot housing market relative to the rest of the nation.

Let's talk a little bit about what Houston has to offer to the prospective homeowner. First of all, no discussion of Houston would be complete without a word on the climate. Quite simply, Houston is very hot and humid in the summer time. If you don't like this, you won't like Houston. However, for those that can deal with the heat, know that Houston is very widely air conditioned, so you'll always be able to stay cool as long as you're inside. In the winter time, Houston has a much more reasonable the many enjoy because of its mildness. No huge blizzards here.

Houston is also really spread out. When people refer to "Houston," they would very well be referring to a very wide range of suburbs and regions that make up the Houston area. Driving from one side of this area to the other could take quite a while, so don't assume that just because your home and your job are both in Houston that your commute will be short. It could very well be a two hour difference.

Speaking of commuting and driving, you should know that Houston has terrible traffic. There's no nicer way of putting it. This means that you should carefully select where your house is in relationship to your place of work, or else you could find yourself wasting much of your life behind the wheel of your car. Do your homework ahead of time to figure where you need to be looking.

Houston isn't all heat, traffic, and distance, though. It is also home to a wide variety of amazing restaurants, stores, sports, nightlife options, and family activities. There is an incredibly broad range of options available for almost any sort of activity you can think of, provide it doesn't require snow and mountains (and if you do want to go skiing, Houston has two large airports that will get you to places like Denver in a couple hours). If you're bored in Houston, you're not trying hard enough.

I hope this help give you some idea of what you're looking at if you're considering moving into the Houston area. It's a big place, and has some crowding issues, but you'll be rewarded by the vibrant economy and vast array of entertainment options. Find yourself a prime piece of Houston real estate, and you'll be on your way to living the good life, Texas style.
