Mayor Annise Parker declares Friday, Jan. 11 as 'Go Houston Texans Day'

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Mayor Annise Parker has declared Friday, January 11, 2013 as "Go Houston Texans Day."

Houstonians are encouraged to wear their Texans gear or something red to work that day in support for the team as it takes on the New England Patriots in Sunday's AFC Divisional playoff game.

"This season -- the best in the franchise's 11 year history -- has been mesmerizing," said Mayor Parker. "We have watched Gary Kubiak and Matt Schaub lead our team to victory more times than ever before, and our defensive powerhouse J.J. Watt has become a household name. Texans fans are steadfast and I know they will show their team spirit as our Bulls on Parade head toward a victory on Sunday!"

She also announced that City Hall will be lit Battle Red through the weekend as an additional show of the city's support for the team.

Galveston declares water shortage emergency

  GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- A main waterline leak in Galveston prompted a water shortage emergency to be declared on the island Saturday.

According to officials, a partial failure of the Gulf Coast Water Authority's 42" waterline is impacting the city's water supply. The waterline supplies the city of Galveston and other communities in southern Galveston County.

The leak was discovered early Friday near the Texas City Wye. Water delivery to the City of Galveston, The Village of Tiki Island, Bayou Vista, Santa Fe, Dickinson, League City, Hitchcock and La Marque has been affected.

City staff is working closely with GCWA to ensure there is no interruption of water service to the island.

A stage 5 drought contingency was announced Saturday evening, meaning the city has enacted mandatory emergency water rationing measures.

According to authorities, all irrigation of landscaped areas with potable water is prohibited until further notice.

The use of potable water to wash any vehicles is also banned, except with special permission in situations affecting public health and safety.

Officials said there will also be a proportional limitation of water deliveries to or diversions by wholesale water customers.

Additionally, pool owners are requested to refrain from filling pools until the water shortage is over.

Repairs to the transmission line will begin Monday and could take 24-48 hours.

The City's ground storage capacity, if the public cooperates fully, should be sufficient to maintain the water supply.
