Man drowns in San Jacinto River

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man died in the San Jacinto River overnight and now deputies want to figure out why.

It happened around 7pm Friday just south of Old Beaumont Highway.

Witnesses told sheriff's deputies two men were on a rocky drop off when one of the men went underwater and never resurfaced.

Deputies are not sure if the victim was swimming or if he fell in.

His body was found about 10 to 15 feet from shore.

Auhorities identified the man Saturday as Jorge Ramirez.

Missing Liberty County teen found safe in San Jacinto County

  LIBERTY COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- A teenager who disappeared Wednesday night in Liberty County has been found safe.

According to authorities, Amber Georgous, 19, disappeared after a party along the Trinity River off SH 105. Her vehicle was later found near Highway 105. The car was apparently wrecked and had a broken window.

A K-9 unit from Montgomery County Precinct 2 was brought in early this morning to help in the search. According to authorities, a DPS helicopter from Austin has also been dispatched.

Investigators say they believed foul play may have been involved, but shortly after 9:30am Georgous was found safe in San Jacinto County. No further details were immediately available.

Body found in trunk at San Jacinto Monument

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Harris County Sheriff's Office authorities are investigating a body found in a trunk at the San Jacinto Monument.

An officer found the body of a male around 3:30pm in the 3500 block of Battleground Road. Authorities say the male may have been someone reportd missing a couple of days ago from nearby. Investigators believe it may be a case of suicide, but they won't know a cause of death until an autopsy is performed. No other details were immediately available. (Copyright ©2011 KTRK-TV/DT. San Jacinto Day celebration marks 175th anniv. of battle

  HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Texas is commemorating the 175th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto.

It was on this day in 1836 when General Sam Houston and his Texan army attacked Santa Anna's Mexican forces during their siesta. The victory led to Santa Anna's capture and paved the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.

A ceremony is scheduled at the San Jacinto Monument. It begins at 10:30am. Former Governor Mark White is this year's speaker.
